God bless! After my 8 days post-Helene, I'm more convinced than ever that the "old tech" is better than the new tech. I got by with Feuerhand hurricane lanterns (so aptly named!!), and hand tools. I had a Surefire flashlight running CR123 batteries, but that was the only battery-powered gadget that was working. For general lighting, my hurricane lanters knocked it out of the ballpark! When my Stihl chainsaw was acting up after sitting for so long, my axes, hatchets, and pruning saws worked without a hitch. And to illustrate the point, just look at how everyone's calling for sheds and other pre-built structures to make homes for people even though they're surrounded by downed trees of every size -- the perfect start to log cabins. We know that Old Tech works because we can see it in the historical records. One-man Crosscut saws will get those downed trees cut to size, but maybe not as fast as a chainsaw will. The difference is that the chainsaw requires a long line of manufacturing and donations in order to work, but hand tools don't. That's why our ancestors could rely on them and get the Appalachians settled. For me, my Feuerhand hurricane lanterns were just something I had because I liked them and they created a nice ambiance throughout the year. When the power went out, I was at peace because I knew I had light to get me through the night. Nobody expected to be out of electricity for so long, sure, but it was a real boost to the psyche to know I didn't have to worry about the hordes of unprepared who were flocking to the stores in search of batteries and everything else. Because I had those Feuerhand lanterns, I was very comfortable at home, and I've since added several more to my collection. Next on the list of things to buy for future preparedness is a Lynx one-man crosscut saw. Not as fast as a chainsaw, I know, but it runs on breakfast! When I was enduring the Days of Darkness post-Helene, all of my Old Tech worked, and all of my new tech didn't. And because I had Old Tech on hand, my supply of new teck went a whole lot further!

Dude, thank you for your time and service. There’s so many azzclowns making videos sensationalizing and politicizing this disaster and NOT doing anything to physically help people on the ground. As someone who’s address actually ends in 28746, Thank You from the bottom of my heart!

Thanks! It’s good just to help, work, document, and just talk with folks. Looking forward to helping out in other areas or ending back up in Chimney Rock to volunteer again.

Yes, it's nice and appreciated but many are going home and now volunteers are fewer! You Tube have videos showing the sheer volume of devastation still there. People are living in sheds, tents, donated RV's and I listened to a message from FEMA to a woman saying their funds are gone now, so no help is available. What now?

I’m heading back to the Rutherfordton area this upcoming week. I’ve asked to get into hardhead areas to help with tree stuff and our debris cleanup. It’s wherever they send us. After talking with folks and a few other places I’ve been over the last month. There’s just help needed everywhere in WNC.

I live in Shelby, NC. and I've been told that many people have nowhere to go, to live until the clean-up is finished, insurance pays up, FEMA helps, etc. I see a lot of wood and some of it looks pretty good. Wood is expensive and is reuseable to build shelters, this might be a consideration, cement blocks for foundations, large pieces of metal roofing, as a roof. With no roads and limited ways to bring in new building supplies, I would think that this might be considered. Tents are good, but a small solid shelter is better. Bricks to build fireplace inside shelters, are any laying around. My husband and I broke down on old outbuilding on the coast and we reused those bricks. I can't remember the name of the machine we used but it just took the cement off the old bricks. Building products are expensive and in a lot of cases can be reused. My neighbor had an old shed but instead of tearing it down, he used boards from another area, he picked up cheap and reboarded the shed walls and remade a new door. It looks like a new shed and those are expensive today with wood costs. Think out of the box. Buildings cleaned up, pick these best rooms and make them solid for housing the people who own those homes. Bunk beds, foldable cots, small stove, also heat from, electricity put in or lamps, make an area to live comfortably in until you can do better. Also, metal can be resold for money, that money used to provide shelter and food and necessities needed. I've seen bunches of metal being tossed away, reuse it or sell it for financial assistance for the people. Just saying! Also, no need to put in landfills, when some of it, maybe a lot of it can be utilized. Any home depots or Lowes, their material if picked up can and should be used to help in building shelters. They're just going to trash it all and get insurance payment to rebuild and replace. What's useable, USE IT!

Everything you said is valid. I think the mentality here is just to clean up because it was such a shock that they’re not even thinking about reusable at this point.

@@oldmanadventuring I watched another sad viewing of Asheville and another close city. It seems the FEMA is out of money and these people have nowhere to go now. No homes, no jobs, no shelter, no bathrooms, toilets, no fresh water. I watch Thom Tillis and Budd, both NC republican senators and the response from Rand Paul, another republican senator. Angry words exchanged, but what Rand Paul said made sense. There is trillions of dollars from the Green New Deal and the Deficit Reduction Act and those money can be redirected towards these States, especially NC and Tenn where major damage is involved. Democrats had the control (right now) and can do this, with just a signature and he said within 10 minutes a check can be going out to NC people, businesses to provide for these people. Tillis and Budd don't want to do that, Why I Don't Know? Tillis is very unliked here in NC and he won't be returning after his current session. About 19 republicans voted for these bills that were approved by the Democrats. Now as far as I know, both democrats and republicans are in our NC and Tenn mountains, and are hurting. I also heard that the Democrats are going to spend all the trillion from those bills before Trump comes into office. I would think, if they got onto TV and said, due to the severe problems that these states are dealing with, we are diverting moneys to these states, first off to get them safe from the upcoming winter (meaning, RV, trailers, etc.) to help these people, Make a big show of it, I don't care. It would be nice to see Americans cared for no matter what party they voted for, and it would make Democrats look better in this polarized country we have but most important help these people's immediate needs. Contact each state and see what additional help can be provided too but help these people. Now I've called Tillis and Budd and sent an email to Schumer. Just spending those tax dollars and not helping these people wouldn't look good in my opinion, they need help and there is tax money available, sitting there and no new bill needed, no decision from the senate or congress, it can happen NOW and there is no excuse for it not to be done that way.

@@oldmanadventuring True enough but I was watching a woman who was living in a donated RV, her and her family, no clean water, no toilet, she had a outside toilet, which she had to haul off the byproduct, but all her cars are gone and she allowed the viewing public to hear a voicemail from FEMA, saying SORRY, WE HAVE NO FUNDS AT THIS TIME, SO WE CAN'T HELP YOU, STRAIGHT FROM THE HORSES MOUTH. NOTHING IS LEFT TO LIVE IN, HOTELS, MOTELS EVERYTHING GONE. Wonderful volunteers from all over the USA but now their leaving too and people have nothing. Many roads, main roads gone and will have to be rebuilt completely, now that mentality you're talking about, well it better start thinking out of the box. Our government has dismissed them and guess what, there is trillions of dollars left in those 2 bills the Dems and 19 republicans passed called: Green New Deal and Deficit Reduction Act and all they have to do is redirect some of that money to these areas. This isn't a political thing. I'm sure both Democrats and Republicans are knee deep in needing help. I've called my representatives and sent an email to Schumer saying contact these states, ask what do you need, money, troops, trailers and utilize those trillions to help Americans Now! The Dems. are going to get rid of all those moneys because Trump's coming and I'm sure a lot of it is going into their pockets before they'll do something to help those people. If that happens and no help given. Election 2026, this independent is going to get rid of as many of them as possible, replace them, fire them but that whirlwind Schumer talked about, well, he and his party will feel it. I'm an Independent but first I'm an American. Help those people!

I hope that Pennzoil was for a chainsaw. Two stroke oil for an outboard is different. A chainsaw turns twice the rpm's compared to an outboard boat motor. Huskies are tough but oil is the heart and soul of its life.

I keep thinking with the mud & debris so high and thick, how do you know you aren’t going to find bodies. And if you do, what is the protocol?
@oldmanadventuring
@oldmanadventuring 2 ай бұрын
I asked the owner if there were any casualties and he said they didn’t. However, if anyone were to come across a body, the protocol is to call 911 and report it.

I live in Chimney Rock , NC. There is no Fema or national guard. They were here for a week for photo opps and then they left. I faired better than most . I watched all my neighbors houses float by me. There are so many old couples who have lost everything. They have cried when I approached them in order to get them access to their homes. I ask the local fire men to help me dig out tons of mud in front of our house so my wife who is a nurse can get to work . The pricks refused . It would have taken an hour with their help it took me 7 days. I did see them eating free food everyday. I refuse to ever ask for any government help. I have neighbors have had to live with me and I have fed several families. My neighbors have been completely abandoned and they need government help and the government is nowhere to be found. I did read today Biden has '''to return from his vacation to get more money for Ukraine and Israel''' his words.

I can definitely empathize with you. I didn’t see a single government person while I was up there and figured I wouldn’t. The groups that are there are church groups, religious organizations, and just regular folk that took time off from their day jobs to spend a few days to help wherever they can. Regular “Joe’s” are doing a much better job than what our government seems to be doing. At least that’s the perception.

The metal scraps anyways can you guys scrap it and make some money off of it or is it because of the chemicals that are still on the metal you can't scrap it. It can make more chemical burn in the soil.
