just a passing human consideration: it couldn't be that she liked the attention, could it? i'm sure that if this was at all in play, it was a secondary thing. but still, i wonder. there is a guy with some kind of low-iq disorder/syndome that cleans my apartment complex (the look on Carlos's face 5:12 actually reminded me of him). he has learned how easy it is to be around me (i smile and am accessible. i try to make him comfy and others generally walk away from him and keep things at a distance). he has begun to curse at me when i go by to get my mail and then he'll smile when i look over.. he'll also sweep garbage up in front of my door every single day... i think i tmay be cuz he wants to get a rise out of me. he wants some kind of excitement or drama in his life or something. so that's what made me consider this aspect.

One sociobiological hypothesis is human(oid) females selected less sexually dimorphic, less aggressive males to avoid infanticide. It's always tough to verify hypotheses. I don’t know, but isn’t it time modern zoos starts ‘listening’ to their animals a little bit more? It sounds as though Pattie is a high ranking female, somewhat higher than Zee-Zee but then Zee-Zee ends up with a bundle of joy, which inadvertently threatened Pattie’s position, and luckily for that zoo’s mishandling of this perilous situation, Zee-Zee knows the chimp society’s politics much better and had to do the right thing, at the same time putting her newborn in danger to defuse the dynamics. The zoo did wrong, and before allowing Zee-Zee to breed, they should’ve given the high-ranking females the occasion to breed as well. Zoos should never dedicate how an animal society should work because in this situation the newborn could have been killed and a huge conflict that could have seen Zee-Zee, Carlos and Tina seriously injured, even the top male was getting upset.
