Not just a drivers’s license but also a chinese license plate which I never get to put in the bike btw;)
Biggest highlight is seeing the mighty Everest this morning going up another 5000m pass on these smooth twisty roads here in china! One thing that is really confusing is the way my friends have to fill up their motorcycles with petrol here it the gas stations in Tibet, what’s that all about? Let me know🤙🏼🇨🇳

I am a Chinese, let me explain why this is so come on. Since the Qinghai-Tibet region is basically a plateau with an altitude of 3000-5000 meters, the humidity in the air is low and dry, and the update of refueling facilities and other equipment in Tibet is slow due to the high altitude, these gas stations are still using old-fashioned refueling guns without removing static electricity. Since the refueling port of motorcycles is mostly designed with direct iron ports, The fuel gun is easy to generate static sparks with these dry iron or steel motorcycle surfaces and cause a fire, so it is necessary to use oil drums, so that even if there is a fire and other accidents can not spread to the entire gas station.

@@MarcTravels Ont only in Qinghai-Tibet .Any flowing liquid generates static electricity, and fuel nozzles are no exception. Generally, gas station fuel dispensers and nozzles have equipotential grounding connections to prevent static sparks from igniting gasoline and causing an explosion. Car fuel tanks are made of metal and have grounding wires to prevent static electricity. However, many bikes fuel tanks are made of plastic. When gasoline is directly injected into a plastic tank through a fuel nozzle, static electricity can accumulate, increasing the risk of an explosion. Therefore, most gas stations use a metal container for refueling mopeds-fuel is first dispensed into the metal container (with the nozzle touching the bottom of the container to ensure grounding) and then poured into the moped's fuel tank at a safe distance from the fuel dispenser. Your large motorcycles also have metal fuel tanks and anti-static measures, so they should be able to refuel directly. However, for gas station staff, determining whether a motorcycle's fuel tank is anti-static is too difficult, so they simply ban all motorcycles from refueling directly at the pump. It's a ridiculous rule, but they have no intention of changing it.

Boy oh boy oh boy! Hi Marc!

Guys at the back trying to play catch up and taking risks, getting out of junctions on to busy roads, food stops, and long waits for all the food, refuelling etc. Small groups or riding alone is much more enjoyable, if I can ride at my own pace and take in the scenery it changes the journey. The reason why you can't use a gas gun to refuel directly may be related to the climate in Tibet. Because Tibet is at a high altitude and the air is relatively dry, plus the motorcycle engine is exposed outside, it is easy to cause a fire. After leaving Tibet, except for a few gas stations, almost all gas stations allow you to use a gas gun to refuel your motorcycle directly.

A long yet fun and beautiful day! Group riding is certainly different than solo riding. You seem to have adapted well, though! Those roads are awesome! They look brand new. A huge difference from the mountains in Nepal! While many have already raised their opinions about the fueling process, all I’ll say is, “it sure is different and tedious”. The reason motorcycles in Tibet are not allowed to refuel at gas stations is due to safety considerations. Prolonged operation can cause the engine to overheat, and gasoline dripping onto the engine can easily ignite. This is a special circumstance; other major cities do not have this issue. Only vehicles with valid licenses are allowed to enter gas stations to refuel

In Chinese gas stations, you need to use a can to refuel, because you are afraid of spilling gasoline on the engine and catching fire. If it is a private gas station, they will use an oil gun to help you refill it.

According to the Operational Safety Regulations for Gas Stations formulated by the China Emergency Management Department, it is prohibited to directly use a fuel nozzle to refuel motorcycles at gas stations. This restriction is due to the high pressure of the fuel nozzle, which can easily cause gasoline to overflow when refueling a motorcycle’s relatively small fuel tank. Additionally, when removing the nozzle, gasoline may drip onto the motorcycle. If these spilled fuel droplets fall onto the hot engine or exhaust pipe after a ride, they can lead to flash fires, potentially resulting in fires or even explosions.Even if the gasoline does not directly fall on the exhaust pipe, it can evaporate and accumulate near the engine. If the concentration exceeds safe levels, igniting the motorcycle can trigger a flash explosion, posing a severe threat to life and safety. We hope that when you are in China, you will comply with China’s regulations for your own safety and that of others!
