China manufacturing during 2023 is a disaster. Watch the video to find out why and how to avoid this problem. Having produced products in China for 12 years, I now have my factory owners telling me and my clients that this year is going to be terrible in China for production.

Hi, I was wondering if you might be able to help. I am looking at manufacturing a product. Still very much in the early stages and I'm trying to figure out how much it would cost and what the typical MOQ would be on this product. Without giving too much away, it's part electrical as it must heat up and would need to be made from some form of metal otherwise it would melt if it was plastic. I appreciate that isn't much to go off but any advice you can offer would be much appreciated.

MOQ on electronic products and components like heating elements can be as high as 3000 pieces. You might be able to negotiate this down to 1000 pieces. As a rough estimate of unit cost, divide your recommended retail price to the end customer by five. Very rough but at least that’s something to go on!

elon musk thinks otherwise. He's got an entire production line in china fo tesla cars and now the chinese have learned to create its own EVs.

Tesla's are made in 3 locations globally to best serve their respective markets, take advantage of government tax breaks and avoid punitive import duties. If you're manufacturing on that scale, this video isn't that useful to you and you won't be needing it. If you're one of the 99.99% of other companies manufacturing product that can't afford multiple production bases, then you might want to consider the content of this video!

I’m now at the point of choosing whether to manufacture in the UK or China but I’m struggling to make a decision. A few months on, would you still advise to manufacture elsewhere if your product hasn’t gone into production yet?
@ProductInnovationAcademy
@ProductInnovationAcademy Жыл бұрын
Good question! I think it’s still worth being very cautious if you have tight deadlines particularly. Ask the Chinese factory whether they are worried about delivering to the agreed timescales and ask just be honest about your concerns. Inevitably it will become a decision based on cost anyway so firstly check the price difference and if you can even afford to manufacture in the uk.

Great info! I have a product/invention that I want to get manufactured in China. I am worried that the manufacturer might steal or sell my idea/design. How do I make sure that doesnt happen? Thanks in advance :)

Hi there. That is a HUGE question! I'll do a video on it shortly and post the link here. In the meantime get a patent, registered design and trademark first, if appropriate. Use a recommended manufacturer who has a track record of not stealing ideas. Get an NDA or CDA signed by the factory first. If possible add the secret sauce at a different factory so one factory doesn't have all the info. Finally let them copy it - for an agreed fee. Give them markets you can't access to sell into in exchange for cheaper tooling/units/fee per unit!
@hilawes

They’ll steal it anyway and if they don’t, another manufacturer will. It’s culturally accepted to steal IP especially from foreigners.

How about India? Kindly respond.

India doesn’t have the same challenges as China this year as their government didn’t take the same response to Covid. However a lot of India factories source parts and/or materials from China and so might well still have some problems as a result. Best to check with the individual manufacturers you are considering using.

I agree with you. But it is still relevant in China in terms of the impact that it continues to have in creating significant production delays. See my other videos on manufacturing in China for commentary on some of the other issues including the type of problem that you mention in your feedback

China manufacturing has become a nightmare. By far the quality of Chinese products have major qualify issues. I look very hard to ensure that what I buy isn't from China.

There are growing manufacturing bases in other countries and more and more products are being made elsewhere. As always, there are good and bad factories in China. Some have very very good quality but some don't.

I’m not sure that is what I’ve done!? I speak to small and large brands regularly about production and the number of companies who are exiting China is huge and on the increase. A quick bit of research on Vietnam (for example) will show how rapidly their production industry is growing and is driven by lots of western companies relocating their production. And they are just one of many countries who are finding a huge market for production amongst those businesses who are de-risking manufacturing by moving from China. I would expect apple and Tesla have both spent millions of pounds already investigating other options and building alternative production routes in other countries - no serious business would be ignoring this.

Infrastructure in India is really bad, and is still hard to find quality workers, because the other ones are just too many. ATM the country is just to chaotic, but with some good reforms in place it can surpass China.
