Well, I have to say they are not at the same depth and accuracy. Focuses are also different. I have to say Kevin's and Kissinger's view are highly colored and lack real appreciation at depth. They also carry a very high degree of prejudice. At the same time, Kevin always try to show off his language ability, in a way to cheat the western audience. Traditionally the Chinese system of governance has been formulated based on its history, culture and uniquely different civilization. What is wrong with offering help as long as it is not forced on other countries via regime change and war. America was the model when it was successful. Now the world sees the USA as a crumbling mess that no sane government would want to import.

It occurs to me Kevin Rudd's opinion reflects a kind of existential crisis among some of the leaders from the west. It seems as the 'Chinese modernization way vs Westernization' competition rages on, there is this widely spread fear among developed countries leaders that their preaching to the world of 'western democracy and capitalism equals to wealth and security' is under threat. And why does this bother these leaders so much? Probably because if more developing countries find China's way of modernization more attractive and eventually turn their head away from western democracy, then that means the US and its allies can't interfere with and make profit from these countries development with its economy and military weapons anymore. And as a result the US global hegemony is bound to fail.

The speaker belongs to one of the few western intellectuals, who has an excellent knowledge of China both past and present, not only about the history of the country but also about the vision of the short and long term economic outlook and think tank of the PRC's leaders of different generations. Moreover, KR is fluent in Chinese language. From that position he explains how the PRC's leaders starting from Deng Xiaoping have developed China internally in the past 30 years, and will develop it in the coming period as well. Population plays always a central place. Externally China is characterized as a reliable partner in relation to other countries. The vijf principle of peaceful co-existence, first mentioned in the text of treaty between India and PRC on Tibet that has been signed on April 29, 1954. At the Asian African Bandung conference in 1954 the inscription became the well know basis of the relations between two countries.

I feel that Rudd tends to overplay his knowledge of Chinese. He understands the surface meanings but often miss the subtleties. Deng's 'shy away from the limelight and bide your time' is meant for a period when growth was yet like a young sapling. It is doubtful whether he would have acted any differently to Xi in the current environment. Remember that even during Deng's Southern Tour to reinvigorate reform he emphasized three principles, one of which is that China must stick to Socialism. Disequilibrium growth was a necessity when China could not generate enough capital of its own. Subsequent development and particularly the Global Financial Crisis in 2008 have turned many Chinese elites against the American model, long before Xi's tenure.
@UUBrahman
@UUBrahman Жыл бұрын
Rudd is a professional diplomat, the main part of his job is extensive explanations of policies and contingent scenarios. Deng was a brilliant survivor with pragmatic concepts after the tragic Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution, and Deng would never criticize Communism, just do an end run around by promoting competition and markets. Under Xi, the PRC has destroyed capital by attacking: tech-retail sector, real estate sector, making local governments fund the Dynamic Zero Covid 19 including the lock downs featuring the Big White brigades, eliminating tutoring, eliminating foreign businesses in China, and, most recently, restructuring the financial sector so the government has more control of information. Now, China has a lot of debt at the city, province, and national level. Rather than getting out of the way and letting businesses improve performance, Xi is investing in the State Owned Enterprises, which will have lower productivity and efficiency. Xi is also trying to promote technological development within a closed Chinese system, which probably is a bad idea, as the input of ideas is limited as are the economic returns - there are few incentives. The PRC would do well to build a stronger social safety net for health and retirement so citizens are not scared to start a small business as Chinese are great merchants. The legal system should be modified to protect the interests of the people, not the party.
@paulkong5066
@paulkong5066 Жыл бұрын
@@UUBrahman Deng was very clear he understood the nature of disequilibrium growth - let some people get rich first. So some redressing was always in the plans. In light of the GFC and the collapse of FTX, it would seem the corrective actions by the Chinese were very much on point. There is still a lot to do, but the achievements of the anti-poverty drive and the introduction of universal healthcare system under Xi's tenure have been widely lauded. The complaint about the CCP is a bit misplaced. The CCP is written in the constitution as the ruling party. Jeffrey Sachs put it well, China is a traditional benign Confucian system which is judged by the competence of its governance for the whole people. It is a civilization state, if Western commentators can understand that.
@happyhappynuts
@happyhappynuts Жыл бұрын
@@paulkong5066 Rudd is well aware of the civilisation-state concept, but that is just an opinion not fact. Australia has impressed me as updated edition of Britain, when it achieved fine educational, economical and political systems. Chinese language is a superior language in its form efficiency, and function, richly embodies culture, as well as an art, with brush pen caligraphy. It is no accident when it developed economically doubling its middle class in 35 years, managed by the CCP. Rudd is an academic scholar who majored in Chinese and after graduation stayed on another year studying classical Chinese, then had a long diplomatic career including postings in Beijing. Huntsman is from a wealthy (chemicals) family and learned Mandarin as a Mormon missionary in Taiwan, I think. I had a philosophy professor from Princeton my freshman year who would pause and quote phrases or think out loud in German, which totally freaked me out as I did not understand and found it profoundly alienating as I was immature and the German was unexpected. I speak Mandarin but resigned to never speak Chinese in front of a class of college students because of my experience with German. Rudd speaks Mandarin as a form of evidence, a direct quote, offering proof of what he is saying in English, which is sort of credibility enhancing and not threatening.

A majority of the so-called Chinese experts have ignored the fact that modern China's industralisation had started as early as 1949. They attribute the economic growth solely to Deng's "open and reform" policies, conveniently ignoring the massive industralisation efforts before 1980s and the re-establishment of China-US diplomatic relation in 1972. Well, they might do Chinese a favour: feel free to talk about China while Chinese will just crack on to change the global establishment. 🙃

@@leewn2319 You should do more research in Chinese industrialisation history. I would recommend you to start with the so-called "43 Project/Initiative" started in 1973 aiming to import entire production lines from the US, West Germany, France, and Italy. China had being seeking every opportunity to establish some sort of relationship with the western world since 1949. It was the western world who closed the door.

This is an excellently well nuanced narration which would be so additive to fostering better relationship with China, if it can be understood that China is near totally immersed with finding the right path to encounter its domestic challenges. Outsiders have their own projections on how the Chinese domestic initiatives impact upon outsiders and they don’t necessarily like them. In doing so they are jumping the gun, because outsiders have no idea how those initiative will actually impact on the Chinese. It is the outcome from the Chinese people that is relevant to the manner in which outsiders have to contend with. If Kevin Rudd had lived amongst the Chinese, he would have been better equipped to complement his academic nuances to possess a more comprehensive ability to more accurately anticipate Chinese reaction. All concepts without its emotive content is fraught with miscomprehension. That is why you’ve to have an appreciation of its culture to be able to understand its language. Otherwise, you expose only the mechanical content.

Well said but I am inclined to believe based on your advice is that China is really beyond criticism? I appreciate the conundrum, the complexities and logistical issues caring for 1.4 billion but the time frame in which you require for outsiders to invest in China before having an informed and valid appraisal of China makes it a rather moot point. This in essence makes China above criticism based on your belief it's so much more complex than any other country? Is that fair to assume this?

I'm doubtful that China despite it's resources has any greater capacity to put us on a favourable path anymore than any other country. More than anything else we need rational people who are less inclined to make remarks such as "Anyone who dares to try that will have their heads bashed bloody against the Great Wall of steel forged by over 1.4 billion Chinese " ! There is no mention of the effect of BRICS and its effect on de-dollarization and the global support it has earned. Kevin, ur analysis is over kill. China under cpc during 1949-1978 did not understand how to run economy. Most of leaders came from dirt poor background. They robbed off assets and Capitals from the rich and entrepreneurs and distribute to the poors as those dirt poor revolutionists would do. To overturn a power is easier than to govern as in Chinese idiom. cpc did not want to see the the poor continued to suffer . Deng was an oversea student to France, he saw capitalism in France. Remember, at that time China had been in perpetual decline about 150 years. In addition to the encouragement of older Lee of Singapore, he started a few smaller scale experiments in China, finally unleashed the entrepreneurism of the Chinese people. It is also good that planned economy helped efficiency of the growth. Some would argue it was largely inefficient approaches. But to Chinese people they have patience. Time (history) to them is of lesser concern compared to in the capitalism. These nation state capitalists could not understand. These are so simple not complicated to chinese. What we need to do is to study what China gets right to pull the thousands year civilization state out of poverty in 40 years. It is extraordinary and what are the advantage of planned economy. Set aside of ideology about cpc. In fact some of the contents of cpc are for the balance of a society as in Europe. Cpc has deep grass roots' supports by that way. We need a degree of protecting the poor (how to do it is a question). Kevin, you have to keep the best interest of Australia in mind. I am worried that most people in us environment would have tendency to be in agreement with us' foreign policy. Myself is not indifferent until the containment policy. Simply in common sense, it would not work, if you do not use military force to help you. All you can do is to improve yourself. In fact, independent voice in us toward China is rare these days. Even if you have been the chairman of Asia society in new york, that would not equivale to an independent thinking towards China. Australia needs Paul Keating type of independent thinker and leader to contour Australia in the trouble water. China/cpc progress is remarkable in positive note. It benefited to the country and to its people. Who cares what the name of the party. To us, the ordinary civilian in the society, Us decline is obvious. If the polis in us continues this trend, they will distract and destroy the supremacy once they wanted to maintain. But Australia should not be the victim in between the big powers' struggles.

Kevin Rudd only understands the surface of China and politics and is overly obsessed with his dialectics and theories Most people who come on here prefer to listen to a limited white man who admittedly has made great pains to understand the Chinese language. What they should really be listening to is from Chinese people directly. Chinese are (since Deng) pragmatic and that extends to the CPC. They are not bogged down by Western obsession with ideology. The West continues to listen to its own voice and continues to make completely farcical predictions on China and its collapse. This is called wishful thinking which people like The Economist and Gordon Chang engage in perennially for over 3 decades since TianAnMen incident. Instead China continues to defy the West and grow. Even after the recent doom and gloom west media reports on China's economy, it is growing at over 5% with the biggest influx of FDI INTO China. Contrast the US with bank collapses and a turgid 1.2% growth + inflation. Yet many in the West continue to drum beat that China will fail bc of its political system. China has zero interest in exporting political systems unlike the West which has a long and dark track record proselytizing as in step with its Abrahamic tradition. China doesn't care. You are free to adopt whatever you think works best for your country. This is where listening to Rudd and ridiculous so called experts on say "Asia Society" (all white) does no one benefit in understanding China. West prefers to wank off to its own coloured lens on China rather than truly understand how the place works. If someone like say Eric X Li explains to them why it works so effectively, they will invent some sort of ideological base excuse to preserve their own untouchable sacred cow 'freedumb and democrazy' We only have to ask what 2 decades plus of Freedom and so called Democracy brought to Afghanistan or Iraq or for that matter the Middle East. Contrast China is one swift move has resolved the Middle East main conflict between Saudis and Iran. The rest of the world understand what China can bring leaving their own baggage of history and ideology to the side in favour of practical solutions. Pity the West prey to their group think created by their equally self serving media😁

Kevin’s delivery is consistently boring as usual, despite the contents. My gut feeling is that Kevin might get two points wrong. (1) Kevin always analyzes the ideology in the Marxism /Leninism/socialism framework. Although the Party donned the Socialism coat, the inner identity is simply a continuation of the elites that existed in the past two thousand years, and the governance is simply a continuation of the political practice that was conducted in the past two thousand years. (2) on the alternative model for other developing countries, I suspect it’s a tactic narrative. Not a single sensible mind in china believes it would work for others. These two possible flaws might have serious consequences if the analysis is extrapolated to guide policy making.
