re hash People outside China think it is a well oiled socialist machine. It isn't. It's a regulatory nightmare and something that people only figure out once they partner with them on projects like this. The more China exposes itself to the world, the more their partners learn about how they do business and what their true intentions are. They are not necessarily evil, but certinaly not virtuous as far as everyone else is concerned. China wants control. Countries who have taken money from China in exchange for control are already schooled in the signficant drawbacks.

China has always had a deep merchant history despite centuries of political structures trying to inhibit it, from Confucian social structures to Communism. Embracing this historic tendency is the correct move.

China got rich by selling porcelain, silk, tea, paper and gunpowder... they kept the manufacturing of this products a secret for a long time especially silk and porcelain... which means they monopolized production, trade and income... porcelain and silk were very popular luxury products *(Romans and Greeks payed a lot of money just to acquire silk).* From Japan, to Southeast Asia, India, Central Asia, the Middle East, Africa and Europe... All of the old world was China's market and they monopolized it... on the other hand the world didn't really have anything that China truly wanted.

Confucius concept of international relationship is father and children, few neighboring countries are granted little brother relationship. Obey father then you will receive benevolence. This is why China has territorial conflicts with ALL of its' neighbors. Historically China had predatory trade and military behavior except during occupation by foreigners. Chinese usually twist history by calling foreign occupation as Chinese dynasties. Mongol empire is Chinese too, funny!
@Shenzhou.
@Shenzhou. 6 жыл бұрын
Why you claim China has territorial conflicts with all our neighbors? China has settled boundary dispute approximately of 20,000 km with 12 countries out of the 22,000 km and is yet to settle about 2,000 km of boundary involving India and Bhutan. -In 1961, Nepal and China signed border agreement. -In 1962, Mongolia and China signed border agreement. -In 1963, Afghanistan and China signed border agreement. -In 1963, Pakistan and China signed border agreement. -In 1991, USSR and China signed Sino-Soviet border agreement. -In 1992, Laos and China signed border agreement. -In 1994, Kazakhstan and China signed border agreement. As for Bhutan and India, China has 21 talks with Bhutan and 19 talks with India but still fail to settle our countries borders.

Never compare Chinese to the disgusting colonial westerners. It is disrespectful.

Yes; the Belt Road initiative has been a success - for China. For instance, China promises to send 1 million tourists to Italy which welcomes it. As some of the Chinese tourists were unruly, China asks whether the Italian police speaks Mandarin. Of course not - came the natural reply, to which China offers to send police to Rome free of charge to ensure that the Chinese tourists behave.

The long term process is not to access foreign markets but to develop it's own domestic market. It has 1.4 billion people which is more than the United States and Europe combined. Why do these so called experts not get this. Export driven growth was a short term solution to get China started and get access to foreign technology and investment. The Belt and Road initiative is an added bonus to reduce trade reliance with the United States while expanding China's influence.

The Belt and Road is a nonissue in the long term because land based trade route can never replace maritime trade based on cost effectiveness and speed. The US Navy controls the world sea lanes and thus have the option to shut off Chinese trade thousands of miles away from any land-based missile defenses.
@jyashin
@jyashin 5 жыл бұрын
That's up for debate. To date, we've never had interconnected rail networks on the scale of BRI. Maritime trade beats railways on cost effectiveness, but not on speed. A freight transport from Italy to China will be much faster than a shipping transport. Besides, BRI doesn't seek to replace the existing shipping lanes. It diversifies. Singapore is already seeing a reduction in traffic through the Strait of Malacca, and BRI is barely 10% through. If BRI actually works, the US Navy will lose all ability to shut off Chinese trade.
@DocPetron
@DocPetron 2 жыл бұрын
The oceans are indeed important. Which is why China: 1. Is building up it's navy. 2. Developed carrier destroying missiles. 3. Claiming the South China Sea. 4. Never going to give up Taiwan. The US still controls the seas near China, but it's grip is slowly slipping.

Disagree. It will continue to be USA geopolitics dictates this . USA has access to both Pacific and Atlantic ocean two relative weak neighbors almost unlimited natural resources and is uninvadable unlike China. Also if a severe economic collapse happens in China 1 billion suddenly impoverished Chinese would result in social unrest the likes of which is unimaginable. USA still hold all the card and will continue to no matter how hard China or Europe or any other region trust to trump them . I am not even American an Irish and I see this clearly

Declan Leigh china is invadable? By whom? USA couldn't even beat china in Korean War when all china had were bag of rice and rifle. But yet you think USA can invade china now? USA carrier will sink if it comes in first/second island chain. If USA soldier actually make it to Chinese mainland, good luck. USA can't even win Vietnam or Afghanistan or even North Korea but wants to invade china? Haha good joke. It will be a massacre if USA troop come to Chinese soil.

"Observe calmly, secure our position, cope with affairs calmly, hide our capacities and bide our time, be good at maintaining a low profile, and never claim leadership." These are wise words. They applied when China was developing into a major world power. But once China became a major world power in the 2010s, it was necessary to take the next steps. Deng said "bide our time" but bide their time until when? Until what? Sooner or later, one must act. Xi determined that it was time to leverage China's advantage, lest they get trampled on by America. It was the right time to make such a move. And BRI is part of it.

Those of you that say infrastructure debt is horrible for developing countries, I’d just like ask, is it worth it to not take the risk of debts and risk not having any infrastructural assets before automation due to poor political cohesion and intellectual ability (as in skilled workers)? Not denying your views, just debating about this myself too.
@nix-be9rj

Consider this. I respect a country denying such projects because they want to maintain their political independence, but for the benefits of their people, political leverage could be worth the exchange if their governments pursued morality over nationalism. Edit: spelling

This may sound like a dumb question, but if developing countries accept Chinese investment with all the strings attached, couldn't these countries just nationalize or seize the assets later? I mean that's what Egypt did with British infrastructure in the Suez canal. Maybe developing countries could do the same thing, at least if China starts putting unbearable pressure on them.
@nix-be9rj

@saihanmohammad3921

Nationalisation is theoretically possible. However, as you may recall in the case of suez canal it invited British and French forces to invade Egypt. Same would go for China, ranging from measures including trade embargoes to even direct military intervention.
@vincenthitchin8740
@vincenthitchin8740 6 жыл бұрын
Saihan Mohammad Yes I suppose you're right. And unlike Egypt, developing countries today would not be able to claim that the seizure of Chinese assets is part of a national liberation struggle, since they are already independent. That would be a difficult argument to make, especially since Washington probably doesn't take the idea of neocolonialism seriously. The only way developing countries could get away with taking Chinese assets is if America were in a war with China. America might have an interest in China losing its assets overseas in that eventuality.

@Stephen Jenkins Correct, and do you know which country imposes the most sanctions in the world? The US. The US uses sanctions as a weapon to hog the wealth away from countries it doesn't like. China doesn't do this though and trades with everybody, including Taiwan. If the US doesn't like you it will forbid its allies from trading with you. Meanwhile China comes to mutually agreed upon deals with all countries.

China more than 5,000 years old has been thru uncounted war and lost millions of lives, China learned that war do no good to anyone and never bring to its goal of winner takes all because always someone better and stronger. The west is young and elegant, selfish and inexperience with hardship, the growth of the nation accompany with violent, competition and materialistic, it is a different culture, value and believe, the winner take all attitude cannot be in peace, that is why the US and China should befriend and help the less developed nations reach its goals, clean up corruption leaders and clean up pollution are the main issues that need to be done. Leaders with wisdom, intelligent and mankind attitude will prevail and restore peace and prosperity. Someday we all will be the world citizen and one government.

Infrastructure will most likely also boost economic activity in the countries the initiative is going through. For more or less corrupt regions like the Balkans and Central Asia this seems really good. Also the way the Chinese is handling the task, by bringing their workers and materials minimize the risks of it being inefficient. As the other comments already said, it brings more alternatives and new opportunities for trade between countries as well.

I am actually VERY curious of this. I does not look like the Middle East will ever become stable by itself, and pouring money is unlikely to change that, and most likely to worsen it. So... will it wreck the project ? Will China steamroll the thing out of exasperation ? Is it part of the plan ? Anyways I doubt the whole project. Does it make sense to start with ? Can they pull it off ? Will it ever pay off ? By the time it's done, will technology or world change have made it obsolete ?

Quite contrary, a destabilized middle east with this project completed gives China justification (legally) to send troops and generally interfere into Middle Eastern countries, and practically this will be applied in support of whichever faction they would support. Given Mr. Jiping's overt intention of becoming a global power I see a massive benefit to China whether stable or not. Imagine what happens to the poor residents of the Middle East when we have another Syria and the first country to place boots on the ground gets to set the course (see how Russia was more decisive in Syria as a case in point). Edit: He who controls the Middle East controls the flow of ________

China will Stabilize the Middle East. It is Already the Largest importer of Oil and Energy. The Middle East countries who supply Energy/Oil will have to adapt to China's demand Especially when countries along the Belt/Road start to Grow Economically. This will lead to population booms along the Belt/Road thus to More Oil/Energy demands.

The Belt and Road Initiative is actually bypassing the maritime trade channel controlled by the United States, and Americans are certainly afraid! Just like the oil China renminbi, China's global industrial division of labor competitiveness is gradually approaching the United States! Therefore, the United States began to comprehensively curb China’s development. US hegemony does not allow any country to compete with the United States! Look at the war launched by the United States. You will understand the reasons for all this! Although the United States is a highly democratized country, behind the democratic government are controlled by large interest groups, such as arms and oil finance. This will inevitably drive the United States to use war and other means to maintain its dominance. This is why U.S. spending has not been used to build the United States. After all, China has experienced a history of 5,000 years of civilization. Looking back at the history of China, the dynasty that used force to dominate was often dying, and the history of the world was also reviewed. Therefore, China will not take the old road of the United States. China's One Belt and One Road is to link the Eurasian African continent with railways, so that it can form the world's largest trade market. The advantage is that it can be separated from the US sea route control. Once the largest world trade market is formed, the United States will be marginalized. The United States will no longer be the central force of the world, and the center of the world will return to Europe, Asia and Africa! This is why the United States is so afraid of the Belt and Road. And China has begun to compete with the United States in high-end manufacturing, so the United States has to do everything to kill China! Including political diplomacy, financial warfare, media public opinion warfare, biological weapons warfare, arms competition, and finally military warfare.

It is PRC's own initiative. How far others accept it (they needn't) needs to be seen. PRC is in need of it as it wants to find an alternative to sea route as it is a geographical convenience & national interest . Second, PRC is flush with funds that need to be invested. Many countries that can't get funding from IMF&WB as well as many such global banks plump for the initiative . These countries are happy that they are getting funding from PRC, but the blue prints are to be drawn by PRC. It isn't without reason (of its own) that PRC is doing where other funding agencies refuse. The iron fist in velvet glove is discernible at some places, that are the military & political components. How the program is implemented is another story.

One crucial point should be to bring Pakistan and India into mutually beneficial agreement through the BRI, this would neutralize the growing US military cooperation with India which could threaten China's plans in the future, China should try as well to increase ties with Russia, a conflict between the 2 countries would be devastating not only for them for for the entire world since China is the economic powerhouse of the globe. A greater cooperation between Asian countries could stabilize the region just like the EU model did for more than 70 years now.

For example in 2011, London’s _Daily Mail_ reported that the Zhengzhou 郑州 New Area was China’s largest “Ghost City.” but today, Zhengzhou has a populationhas a population of *9,378,000* inhabitants. In Sudan,Chinese build dams have stop the flood,and irrigation area doubled,the whole country's power production have jump the 3 times higher. In Pakistan,we build many road and power plant,electronic power production raise 30%,now Pakistan is very few to have power failures.And Pakistan G5 motor highway now is better than any of indian's. In Sri lanka we build the power plant,use coal replace oil,product 30% of the power in the country,reduce the electricity power fees from 40 Sri Lanka rupee to 10 rupees.. In Bangleash,we build bridge and tunnel across Genges River,connect the 2 separate part of the country divided by the river.promote economics raise 2%. In Uzbekistan,we build the tunnel connect 2 part of country which is divided by the very high mountain,the railway can pass the tunnel in 5 munites promote the unification.. In laos,Burma and Geogia,we build many dams and now they can export the power ,which is the biggest cash income of the country. In Ethiopia and kenya,we build the railway connect the inland and the seaport,largely promote the development. In Nigria we help them build the cement plant,help the big man Dangote become the cement king in Africa,and now he is No1 billionare in Africa. and so many,this is just a very small part..Anyhow this is win--win,,we are not the colonist to rob in there but we are not the god.We can not freely build that,they pay the price,and got the plant.Our building price is much cheaper than the west,much fast and high quality.

Honestly, all this talk about the Belt Road Initiative replacing the US is ridiculous and overblown. Let's see the rise of the US and its consolidation of power in the late 40s: -Occupied and devastated Europe, killing millions. -Occupied and devastated China and Japan, dropping two atomic bombs on the latter, also killing millions. -Created a global suprastate and bank (the UN and the World Bank) that every country was forced to join. -Created NATO, the biggest military organisation in all of history. -Created the OAS, through which it consolidated its rule over the entirety of the Western Hemisphere All of this in a span of 5 years. Five years. That's the same time span of the BRI which started in 2013, and no significant advances of Chinese global hegemony have been done, with the BRI advancing at an extremely slow pace. China has not invaded and occupied even a single country in this time span, nor created anything comparable to the UN, the World Bank, NATO and the OAS. Of course, many are comparing China's rise to the US's rise, saying that the US replaced the British Empire as the world's leading superpower, and China is now going to replace the US. But this is an extremely inaccurate comparison. The US was already challenging British hegemony in the Western Hemisphere by conquering its Western frontier and half of Mexico and sending filibusters to Latin America. It also successfully challenged British hegemony in the Pacific and Africa, by invading Pacific islands, forcing Japan to sign a treaty with it and creating the African colony of Liberia. The US even managed to secure sea routes in the Mediterranean by bombing North African coasts. Communist China in its first 70 years has done nothing that comes close. It hasn't created a single colony, added a single territory except Hong Kong, and its only major war with other country has been the Korean War. So can we please stop with the comparisons?
