I was active in the US Navy between 2011-2017, and did 2 deployments in amphibious fleets acting within the 5th fleet (Middle East) and 7th fleet (Pacific) in 2013 and 2016. We had to act as "presence of force" in the South China Sea during both deployments as we crossed through 7th fleet, and moored in multiple ports of the surrounding states. China always has multiple subs and spy planes following our fleets to act as bravado, but it's crazy how easily we could blockade China from our positions all throughout Southeast Asia, while the US literally sits on the complete other side of the world.

While the matter of arguing who's in the right is subjective, it seems that the US, it allies, and China's neighboring states are objectively viewed as more favorable in virtue in their defense against Chinese expansion than China's demands for control of the South China Sea.

The USMC specifically has been well ahead of the curve. They've been moving back to their roots for several years now and have been toying around with some next level stuff. A lot of the drone use we're seeing in Ukraine has already been tested by Marines going back several years. They are increasing the size of the fireteam to make use of these small surveillance drones that can also pack a top down punch using remote grenades. They want close air support on multiple scales. Keep in mind it was the USMC that first experimented with close air support in WW1. So now an assistant squad leader will help with mission critical and future cyber warfare capabilities on the squad leaders right shoulder, and a dedicated drone operator with 40mm remote grenades and likely other portable suicide drones on the squad leaders left shoulder. Every single squad will have the new Carl Gustaf. That's a lot of punch. Bye bye light machine gun. Every Marine sans the Gustaf gunner has the ability to lay down suppressing fire with the M27. They not only ditched their tanks but are also in the process of ditching most tubed artillery in favor of HIMARS which they proved can be fired from moving ships. Also eyeing the ballistic missiles in a shipping container concept. They are restructuring for island fights in a major way and with some serious ingenuity.

While the Japanese occupied many islands it was seldom in the face of more than token resistance - and besides, those who got island experience were almost entirely annihilated by the U.S. in the course of the war. When I was a kid I read a bunch of books about that campaign that had been written by veterans with young readers in mind, and the ingenuity of American soldiers was amazing. In many cases they simply built the equipment they needed for a particular landing when the need arose, in theatre.

Technically if one thinks of aircraft carriers as being able to host fighter jets instead of just helicopters, then yea, the smaller LHA & LHDs of the US Navy counts. And recently the US Navy managed to bolster their arsenal further by successfully testing out the conversion of their 2 America-class LHAs, USS America & USS Tripoli, into being able to host 20 F-35Bs. So now the number of US carriers that can send F-35 jets into combat have increased from 11 to 13, without even building any new carrier. And the number of those LHAs will gradually increase overtime. Another thing this video didn't mention is Japan's Navy ("Self-Defense Force"). The Japanese are now even converting their 2 largest helicopter carriers into aircraft carriers to also being able to host and operate F-35Bs, and additionally the Japanese Navy has about as many destroyers, frigates and submarines as the Royal Navy & French Navy combined. All of Japan's naval assets will definitely be in full support of the US Navy in the event of war with China and their misguided fantasies of invading Taiwan.

Malaysian here - that was done during the time of Prime Minister Abdullah Badawi, when the Malaysian government ceded some of the oil wells in Malaysian EEZ to Brunei, so the Brunei will recognise Limbang as Malaysian. For non-Malaysians, Limbang is an exclave outside Sarawak (Malaysia)-Brunei border. The people of Limbang had to cross the Brunei border to get to the other side of Malaysia; the other possible way is through the jungle. However, as a plot twist - from what I have read - Brunei did not explicitly recognise Limbang as Malaysian despite these exchange. Nevertheless, Malaysia and Brunei still have a very cordial relationship.

actually the reason the Vietnamese claims are so vast are due to our millennium long occupation of both the paracel isles and the spratley isles which could go back to upwards of hundreds up to a thousand years in which we were the first and practically only populated integrity of the area, our Fishermans fished there for years and throughout the ages we claimed those isles as part of our civil ruling, until in recent times that is when China, the Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia and Brunei started expanding as well and asserting their claims, relative to them, we have proper documentations from ancient times of when we were first there and were recognized to be apart of our nation by the olden French Empire, the Qing Dynasty and the other powers within the region at the time, now China is claiming they were there first, illegally killing our soldiers stationed there in 79' and has been reasserting themselves ever since.

I might note that the "northern passage" route you describe goes right by Alaska. Yes the gap is a lot wider than 1.5 miles but radar sees a long ways and giant tankers and container ships aren't at all stealthy. @@1992kleenex If my country of Norway put up a blockade we would be in direct conflict with Russia, since they would have a massive interest in taxing this much shorter route in global trades. Norway as NATO member would be at war with China through the union with the US. But it would be a different beast to aggravate the Russian neighbour. We would effectively help "destroy" Russia's "only" source of trade partner China. This would threaten the existence of both as a superpower. So if the US dont want to fight China in Alaska, and fight Russia in Norway, the easiest step would be to just mine the bering strait or threaten private LNG companies with sanctions/sinking if they use the route.

The ultimate problem with BRI is that while it might have some great political and social benefits, when it comes to moving goods... moving by land is 8x to 12x as expensive for $/ton/mile than shipping the same tonnage by sea. I learned much of this in school, some 20 years ago. Back then it was mostly about driving a wedge between communist regimes - the latest gas reserves were unknown (like in Ukraine...), but the importance of Taiwan and the region was already abundantly clear. Same for the support for dictators and Israel in the Middle East, or the invasion of Vietnam for that matter. The latter aimed to thwart China above all else - done more successfully in South Korea: creating an ally next door to China (the invasions in Iraq and Afghanistan have a similar origin, right next to Iran). The fact you compare this (and books, dedicated journalists - real information) to TV and the news (mostly entertainment) is just baffling. The latter want ratings and are nearly always shallow, short tempered and near sighted... The former often has little money, doesn't get (nor wants) much attention, but loves his/her work. You'd expect them in places like this, or in some obscure magazine/website. People like woodward and attenborough stand out, but it took them a long time to get noticed (since it wasn't about being noticed - not about them, but about their love). But better late then never I suppose. Quality takes time. It's easier to just keep peddling fear, temptation and sensational but pointless events. Makes money a lot easier and people who invest money just love that. This is the main problem with MSM (and to some extent politics) these days; their audience became too big and the MSM are offering the lowest common denominator in an effort to maximise profit - the achilles' heel of capitalism. Ideals are a lot more difficult to sell, they take effort... The dude here still believes in informing people and objectivity. That's rare in big corporations, especially when they are present on wall street, when they have stocks and a lot of people who just want money. In the end, all of this is about money. And the power it holds over people and their greed. Finding out the motivation behind a narrative is very important, each and every day - most 'impportant' people tend to be very manipulative. You forgot to mention Indian union territory of Andaman and Nicobar islands which are way closer to Aceh, Indonesia than mainland India. It has a huge military presence and India is increasing that. Andaman and Nicobar Islands are our unsinkable aircraft carrier. India and China aren't really friends either and in 2020 there was a deadly skirmish leading to deaths in Himalayas. In case war breaks out and India is dragged in, India will inevitably ally with US and give Americans access to Andamans. Through Andamans, Indian Navy itself can choke strait of Malacca. A quad imposed blockade of Malacca through Andamans is a logical possibility happening if things go south.

Maybe i'm just being dumb but I can't see the Northern sea route being massively better as to get through it you would have to pass the Bering strait which in theory the Americans could stop or atleast make incredibly difficult if tension continued to rise or became a hot war. After all the other path shown just goes back through the strait of Malacca anyway so would this mean China would change from having a Malacca dilemma to a Bering dilemma. After all do we think both the Americans and Russians aren't going to be interested in building a base at such a strategic point when global warming makes the arctic more accessible

Genocide means the mass killing of a certain group. If genocide is happening in China then how is this video showing Uyghurs walking around and even having their population grow? Many Americans including myself did not know this but the Han Chinese were limited to one child, meanwhile, the Uyghurs did not have this limitation. The Chinese are pretty bad at genocide if you do your own research. Do these education/concentration camps exists? Probably. China has imprisoned somewhere between 1 and 3 million of the 12 million Uyghurs, forced mass sterilization on them (the birth rate has fallen 85% in Uyghur dominated areas), enslaved hundreds of thousands, and on all of them have a surveillance state so incredibly invasive that the Chinese government tracks the whereabouts of essentially every Uyghur 24/7. Yes, some Uyghurs have been terrorists and carried out suicide bombings... after China dominated and repressed them, ala the Kurds, the Rohingya, the Jews, and the Native Americans. Is terrorism bad? Yes. Is incarcerating and slowly murdering an entire ethnic group bad? Much more so.

Just want to point out the arctic route goes right through the Bering straight, aka right past Alaska. It would be absolutely no issue for the US to block this route as well if they wanted to meaning in any case America will control all of chokepoints vital to Chinese economics for decades if not longer China really just has to cross its fingers and hope the U.S collapses in upon itself due to internal divisions cause that’s about the only way they could hope to solve this issue

On one hand, Russia controls half of the Bering Strait, but on the other hand, the Russian navy can't do much if the US decides to blockade it anyways, tho that would cause quite the diplomatic situation. Ultimately, for whether or not a blockade is warranted and feasible, it's a matter of US political will and the scale of the conflict

To pass through the Arctic Ocean, you'd have to pass through the Bering Straight.. Alaskan USA on the east, Russia on the west. It would be really easy for the US Navy to blockade that small passage too. Frankly, I don't see a win here for China as far as Ocean routs are concerned. I think their best bet is to develop land routes.

I don't think the US would risk nuclear war to blockade Russia's arctic trade route. Since the US cannot legally dispute that territory, they have no options to use when justifying a blockade. Russia would also have perfectly legal justification to attack in kind

The question isn't if attacking is legal or justified, the question is _Would_ Russia attack the US if they blockaded the the straight. Consider that Russia is no match for the US, and that the risk of nuclear war is true for both sides, I don't think Russia would take the risk. The US however would, and I can demonstrate why: The US is already disputing China's territorial water claims by sailing their warships within those respective boundaries. If the US is ok with risking war with China, they'll have no problem doing the same against Russia.

The thing about land trade is that it’s easily destroyed. Rail and pipes could be taken out with a couple well placed air strikes and I’m sure they would be put out of service for at least a couple weeks which would give time to make more strikes and with them extending so far you could treat it like futile warfare and attack and pull out all along the lines effectively ruining the supply for good.

They’re usually quite deep in the country that sending fighter jets would be a one way mission. Should the pipelines run through Afghanistan that place is as far from the sea as one can get. As for railways in Russia the aircraft would need more fuel than its operational range.

China's claims are a lot greater than what most of the world is familiar with and what they publicly admit to. In the past, China used to suggest China was a lot bigger and included countries/territories all across Asia like Korea, Ryukyu Islands and former tributary states like Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bhutan, Myanmar, Java and Thailand. These are claims propagated by people like Mao Zedong and published in maps known as "Maps of National Shame" (国耻地图). Maybe an attempt at healing a wounded national identity at the time but some things remain the same.

China's problem is China's geography which China can never fix. They are situated inside of a pocket and can be kept in that pocket. China is the only super power in the last 200 years with this problem. Even if they build great roads and railroads these can be taken out by tomahawks. US, Russia, The common wealth, Even Germany at peak power had access to different sea lanes. China is stuck at the ass end of the pacific and surrounded by countries that hate them. China's greatest threat isn't even the US. It's a rising India. If they can duplicate the growth of China as China becomes a consumption economy they will steal all the business from China as they have better access to shipping lanes. They are closer to the oil and they are far less industrialized. China's only hope is too keep the world at peace and continue to exploit Africa until they can be powerful enough to help China in a war as we are currently seeing what an ally Russia would be.
