most of the time for football to succeed, you either need to be a traditional football power house that is economically rich per capita, like Germany, or you need to be poor and stuck in the middle income trap like Brazil. Rich countries like Germany uses their financial power, and a well developed system to scout for the best talents, and form the best tactics, a richer society also gives their youth less burden in schools, and their education system encourages extracurricular sports. Which results in a constantly good football team. Poorer countries like Brazil who is stuck in the middle income trap, has a huge population that are stuck in poverty, due to economic stagnation, most of these children and their families do not see a way out of poverty through academic achievements, this plus the obvious huge passion the Brazilians have for football, have created an incredible amount of grassroots players who honed their skills on the streets. China on the other hand is stuck between the 2 types, China does not have a tradition of professional football industry, plus the Chinese families do not see Football as a proper pursuit of a career, I remember when I was a kid, another boy who lived in the same apartment complex went to a football academy, and people including my parents would always say, he only goes there because he's bad at study. Plus a fast growing economy, people would always prefer their kids to do well in school and get a proper job. To put it simply, Chinese parents love to watch football, but never allows their kids to play football professionally. So China's strategy of embedding football into the school curriculum is the right move, they can even study from the American sports scholarship system, to attract football talents into universities.

When I was a kid, I was always dreaming of playing football on a professional pitch. It finally becomes reality in China nowadays. Campus football is good start to get everyone involved in this beautiful sport rather than just watching it from TV. China has a huge football fan population, but its pro footballer population is tiny. For most working class families watching football is a joy, but sending kids to football academy is a risky decision. Big money pouring into CSL and youth academies may improve the situation gradually. A strong and competitive CSL benefits the growth of Chinese footballers. Wu Lei is such a example. He won the champion, MVP, and golden boot of CSL in 2018. Without any penalty, he beat world class strikers like Hulk, Pato, and Bakambo. Now he earns a starter position in La Liga. I wish he can succeed in Spain and inspire more and more football kids in China.

You can teach kids how to kick the ball, but becoming good at football is mostly about time in the field. That's why the only way for succeeding is to set an environment in which kids get to play a lot and with good players, since you learn more through observation and practice with fellow players than from the coach. That means that, in order to achieve that final touch towards greatness, they need to mix chinese players with great players so that they can learn the craft. Making it an everyday social activity for the average chinese helps cement the football culture as well.

Not saying this video is dishonest, but there are some intentionally (or not) left out fact. I grew up in Beijing 3 to 12 yrs old. I rmb all of the kids in the neighborhood were just playing street soccer around 6 to 9... then at 10 yrs old we would start to go try outs for diff. Soccer schools in the city. I got accepted by a school ran by a retired famous player at 9, that was back in 96. Trained with the jr side for a yr and got promoted to Sr. Side at 11. So it wasn't as the video said we were forced or built to play. If I were to continue at 13 I would have gone to try-outs in one of these soccer school mentioned. They are not regular schools, rather they are Sporting Clubs or Athletico as Europeans call it. They are fairly common in China, especially in costal cities with European concession neighbourhoods. Also a lot of new ones are built because the style is popular. If you go to some cities on the coast they look just like western europe in some areas. Dailian, Qingdao and Shanghai comes to mind.

I went to china a year before the pandemic and there is a big problem with football there. There are no public pitches in parks and you don’t see kids just kicking a ball around like you would in Brazil or England. There isn’t a passion for the game.

I feel the mandatory part sounds wrong.Playing football requires passion either u have it or u dont.Sports is not meant for everyone, especially football.Neymar messi ...all these players did u really think they came out of a mandatory govt project to find the next pele or maradona? NO they played for the sake of fun and passion and thats why they are so successful and making a name for themselves. If u like something, and u are willing to work hard, at least part of it would come to you naturally. Its like those parents who force their kids to play the violin or the piano to be the next mozart blah blah blah...Music can be forced into them but the same cant be said about sports.U either have it or u dont.So instead of forcing them to follow ur policy simply because you want a good national team ,try to give kids more sports inclined environments and influence them with the passion since young, then there will be a natural filter of who can or who cannot.Just simply look at your neighbours Korea for an example and look at how successful their programs are. They might not even have a tenth of your population, but they sure do make some good players across the years,ji sung park, son heung min,etc

When I was in elementary school in China, due to the less space on the school playground, and it’s constantly causing the problem that kicking football accidentally breaking the school’s window and hurting the pass by student, so we had been told by the school leader we are not allowed to play football at school. After that, we trend to play basketball instead. And not only that, during my school life in China, PE class in not as important as other courses subject like English and mathematics etc, so its have always been cancelled due to the fact we need more time to study other courses.

As a new Chinese football fans coming from Malaysia I see Chinese football is improving. Since 2016 until now I follow CSL progress. Now we can see the league is getting better. The dominance of guangzhou evergrande is no longer there. Teams like Shanghai SIPG, Beijing Guoan and Shandong Luneng is there to compete. But I honestly think the transfer policy and CSL rules is too complicated. Besides, the gap between CSL and China League One is very big. I think Chinese FA should allow 5 instead of only 4 foreign players in transfer market and can use 4 players on the field. And the transfer should also can sign a goalkeeper as I see the chinese goalkeeper too need some competition. For example Wang dalei, yan junling is too comfortable in their respective squad. They need challenge. Sending the best gk in CSL for 2 consecutive years to Espanyol following Wu Lei step isn't the right thing to do. Also, all football team there need help from billionaire like Fosun group, Tony Xia or making deal with some Arab billionaire. I understand that CFA is ruling the league. I think here, all football team in China and CFA should follow EPL. They make some agreements to make the owner of the football group can have some business football culture with global. You can read it in Wikipedia about English Premier League. Investing on top coach and scout from all countries should be great. There is a lot of available managers who isn't contract with anyone. Luciano spaletti, Peter stoger, laurent blanc, moyes, slaven bilic, julen lapotegui, Santiago solari Jose mourinho, arsene wenger, Sam allardyce, gattuso, Thierry Henry are some of the popular name who is still not manage any team. Those club in China League One or CSL who still doesn't have foreign managers should take them all. I'm not saying Chinese manager isn't good. But top coach can motivate Chinese footballer more. The tactics, coaching setup all different. The Chinese manager can also help themselves by learning from the best. They can be 2nd man in the each team staff.

Cody Shi chinese basketball is decent, yao ming is in the hall of fame. Mainland Chinese people do not play baseball or cricket. Although Taiwanese people who are Chinese as well does play baseball and they’re not bad. Chinese football is maybe the worst of any sport China participates in, there is probably no other national level sport that China is as bad at as football.
