A sweeping regulatory crackdown is underway in China, now expanding to target many of the country's most successful private sector firms, from tech giants to tutoring companies. While a thriving private sector has helped power China’s rapid economic rise, Chinese President Xi Jinping now seems determined to rein in what he sees as its uncontrolled excesses. At the same time, new restrictions on overseas listings signal China’s intention to remove its tech giants from foreign scrutiny on national security grounds. Is this campaign transitory, or a game-changing shift in Xi’s economic and political strategy?
Bloomberg New Economy Editorial Director Andrew Browne discusses China's Tech Crackdown with Keyu Jin, Associate Professor of Economics at the London School of Economics & Political Science, James McGregor, Chairman, Greater China, APCO Worldwide and The Honorable Kevin Rudd AC, 26th Prime Minister of Australia; President and CEO, Asia Society; President, Asia Society Policy Institute.

It is also possible, that Xi Ping's agenda includes developing a socio-economic growth model that can be applied to not only ensure China's future prosperity, but also perfecting a new model for driving global prosperity & influence across the world -- particularly India, Africa and South America.

Keyu Jin shows she has a deep understanding of the direction of where President Xi would like China to head in terms of social re-engineering. Browne shows the least understanding, perhaps aided by his need to propagandise western self importance.

55:00 Kevin Ludd is still praising and promoting free market. Please go out more often. You see in the global trade, is it free market? How many bans and sanctions in place? Fed controlling the interests rate, is it free market? The foundation of trade and market is based on politics, nothing else. You can do all the free market things as much as politics allow.

Kevin Rudd views are fair and his message is that " Free Market " is the Global Market for all, except that it is always a case where the stronger or more powerful entities will try to circumvent the right behavior to take advantage to gain most. It is up to each entity/countries to know only know intimately the rules but also the weakness to be prepared to counter defend ones position or advantages at hand. World of Business.

@@rachedel-moctar4290 Rudd's entire explanation is based on Anglo metaphysics which limits his understanding. With pretty good grasp in realism but he cannot let go of his identity. Ask yourself have you seen any Chinese prominent figure calling for change in other countries internal affairs. Especially when every poll and studies show China's govt has higher approval than Australian and USA. Chinese are satisfied he is not, he wants to turn the world in his image. This is not petty identity but the foundation to his true beliefs. This is toxic to entirety of humanity.

I tend to agree with Kevin's more balanced view. Xi is optimistic that his party has an answer to problem. Keyu shared how the community deals with problem which western society may not understand and agree with. But certain views are fair ones. Too much extreme views on latest crackdown, generally this panel gave a more balanced and insightful account of the crackdown

Whoever takes care of its own bottom 50% population faithfully will always play the role successfully and geopolitically, no matter how big, instead of high tech. Without Chinese successful political development, there would be no increasing amount of Chinese middle class population and later Chinese huge shopping power, and there would be no chance for Alibaba or Jack Ma at all. Since 40 years Chinese government and its right policy have been creating 5 hundred million Chinese middle class population, who have enormous shopping power, which makes Jack Ma’s successful business possible. Otherwise, he would be still begging on the street. Without Chinese prosperity under the CCP, he will be the fish without water.

Compared with Soviet Union, USA’s iron curtain is much heavier and thicker. After WWII alone USA decided 13 wars around the world, according to Prof. John Mearsheimer, and its system cross two presidents, Trump and Biden, has killed over 1.1 million innocent Americans. But no one on this “democratic” soil dares to stand up and sue those politicians and government. Data tell us who is nowadays dictator, instead of our big mouths.

Andy, Are you aware that you have funny ear buds sticking out of your ears while you're on camera? I know it's perfectly rational to know that you can't hear us so there no reason to pretend that we are actually human beings and actually there in the room with you. Nevertheless, this pose carries the clear insult to us. You are emphasizing to us that your words are important and we aren't. This is certainly true, but it's still bad staging to come out and do it. Quite apart from this perhaps subtle point, it also makes you look silly, as though you wandered in off the street and didn't have time to prepare to do your job.
