okay. at 4:06, I have some input. Vietnam actually gained Independence from La France on 2nd September, 1945. Vietnam's independence inspired many other French colonies worldwide to rise up against the colonial govt. France came back trying to take over Vietnam again. 1954 was when France lost la bataille Điện Biên Phủ and Vietnam was divided into two under the Geneva Accord.
@tonyvu20114 жыл бұрын
Incorrect, Vietnamese Communist known as Vietminh proclaimed independence in 1945 but it was not recognised by France or internationally. The communist forces at that time only controlled some rural areas of North Vietnam and were fighting the French until the battle of Điện Biên Phủ. The defeated France was forced to sue for peace in 1954 in Geneva, which created North and South Vietnam. North Vietnam was controlled by communist known as Socialist Republic of Vietnam, and South Vietnam was a new non-communist country known as Republic of Vietnam. That was the prelude for a civil war and later American involvement (much like North and South Korea situation) made it into what we have known as the Vietnam War.
@karllarsen87973 жыл бұрын
Wrong. Ho Cho Minh got his inspiration of violent struggle for independence from France by learning from Haitian Revolution which overthrew French Rule in 1804, 150 years before your beloved Ho Cho Minh could repeat the success of the Haitians. Your Ho Cho Minh did not inspire any one to rise up against the conolinal French. It was the Haitians. Do not waste time on KZbin with ignorant comments in the future. Go back to school. @@karllarsen8797 Wrong again. Ho Chi Minh did not get his inspiration from the Haitian Revolution. The Vietnamese got their inspiration of violent struggle for Independence to overthrow French rule from the very people who subjugated them. The Vietnamese were forced to learn French, French history, and you guessed it, the French Revolution (in 1789, which predates the Haitian Revolution). If the French underclass could rise up with subversion and wage a revolution against its own government and aristocratic elites why couldn't the Vietnamese do the same with the French ruling class at the time on their own land. Because of their arrogance, the French digged their own grave with that move, and that was the beginning of the undoing of the French colonial government, a double-edge sword if there ever was one. Next time take it back a notch if you're going to spread misinformation, ignorance, and name call. It was unnecessary to disrespect Ho Chi Minh. And if you're going to come at it like that, one ought to look no further than the current state of Haiti.

I lived and worked in Vietnam for 2.5 years. It is a very young country. Most born after the war in the 70s. Everyone I met loved the United States and Americans. They also greatly disliked China. Lots of distrust. In fact, each time a Chinese flagged vessel came within 50 miles of their shore Vietnam would send out armed SU-27 fighters to circle or harass that ship. Their military presence along the Chinese border is quite large. I enjoyed Vietnam and the Vietnamese people. They are great allies against China as that country flexes it’s muscles throughout the world.
@ngocphathung44633 жыл бұрын
Vietnam and China had been fighting though out the history, at least 2000 years. Whenever a new dynasty is established in China, they always try to invade Vietnam at least once. The Vietnamese people nowadays, especially the elder, are very against the China and Chinese products, though the younger generations are much more open-minded. Politically speaking, it is also because of anti-communist propaganda of the Western media (from the South Vietnam refugees in the US, Canada, Australia, ...). Ordinary Vietnamese people (who have no political knowledge) are often anti-communist, or at least anti the government. So they hate the communist government of China and also as a consequence, the communist government of Vietnam. The opposite side of communism is capitalism, and the big boss of capitalism is the United States. That explains what you experienced in Vietnam. In fact, most people here don't hate the Taiwanese although genetically they're Chinese. It's both because of Western propaganda and the aggressiveness of the CPC.

Great video. Few things worth mentioning though: 1) Vietnam had been fighting for independence against China for more than 1000 years (179 BC - 938 AD). 100 years (1858 - 1976) of the French colonization and the Vietnam war were brief compared to that. Thus, the US might be Vietnam's worst enemy IN MODERN HISTORY, not in its entirety. 2) Vietnam allegedly launched cyber attacks on the Chinese government agencies in Jan 2020 in an attempt to uncover intel on the coronavirus. A right intention doesn't justify bad actions, but it somehow shows the Vietnamese government's distrust in the CCP. 3) Regarding the South China Sea territory, it would be great to explore the legal perspective. Most countries in the disputed areas claim their territories based on the UNCLOS 200 NM exclusive economic zone. Meanwhile, China & Taiwan claim based on the undefined and vaguely located demarcation line called nine-dash line. There's also The Hague ruling regarding the Philippines v. China (PCA case number 2013-19) on this case brought by the Philippines.

@John Smith Vietnam had been fighting for independence against China for more than 1000 years ----------- In terms of culture, Vietnam belongs to the Sinosphere, which is affected mainly by China, as same as Japan and Korea. Chinese characters are used widely in this culture block, with many variants in different countries. Only the government installed by the Chinese loyal to the Great Han dynasty, but the people did not, they always fight for their independence for thousand years. Despite the Vietnamese haven't invented their own writing system until 14th century, they still preserved their ancient speaking language and Chinese people can not understand it. Until 938AD, Vietnam have completely gained independence from China, not until the day that French came Vietnam attacked Cambodia ----------- The Khmer Rouge attacked Vietnam first on 5th April 1975, less than a week after the Fall of Saigon and they continued to attack several border districts of Vietnam until Vietnam declared Khmer Rouge as an enemy of Vietnamese people in 1977. Vietnam have prepared for a war with the Khmer Rouge since 1977, however, as they recognized China was standing behind the Khmer Rouge, they also have to prepared for a war against China. Until 24th December 1978, Vietnam launched an operation to recapture the areas which were lost to the Khmer Rouge from 1975 On 28th December 1978, Vietnam crossed Cambodia border On 7th January 1979, Vietnam entered Phnom Penh On 8th January 1979, the PRK, a pro-Vietnamese government founded in Phnom Penh On 17th January 1979, the last town of Khmer Rouge captured by the Vietnamese .... On 17th February 1979, China with 300.000 soldiers launched an attack of Vietnam border while Vietnam have only 50.000 militiamen, including women who joined the defense. On 6th March 1979, Vietnam called for the mobilization, prepared for a large-scale war against China, China immediately withdrew its troops from Vietnam, Vietnam decided did not trace the Chinese for later peace negotiation. The furthest point that Chinese army reached were not more than 10km inside Vietnam border, despite 6:1 ratio and modern army

The protests started when the government announced plans that would allow China (and other foreigners) to lease areas of Vietnam for 99 years. Protests aren't legal in Vietnam, so there was a crackdown, but the bill was abandoned due to the backlash. The government definitely were not in favor or supportive of these protests.

Relations between Vietnam and China have deteriorated since General Secretary Le Duan and Deng Xiaoping took power (replacing Ho Chi Minh and Mao Zedong, when the two countries were close friends). Le Duan (who Ho Chi Minh chose to succeed in 1960) was a very solid national stance. He said that China helped Vietnam in the war against the US, but the CCP wanted to dominate Vietnam (like 2nd North Korea ). Therefore, Le Duan had a very tough policy towards the chinese vietnamese , forcing them to return to China and whoever chose to stay, their property was confiscated, assimilated into the Vietnamese, ... leading to the Vietnam - Khmer Rouge and Vietnam - China war. a few years later. Le Duan is a symbol of the war against the US, reunification, the designer of the South Vietnamese liberation strategy. Vietnamese people have a funny sentence, "Chuẩn như Lê Duẩn" (meaning Exactly like Le Duan =))))). I think many foreigners think that Le Duan's decision at that time was wrong. The Chinese have reason to hate him, but me and many Vietnamese still think it's right: v Vietnam - China relations are just a policy issue between the two countries. The Chinese are very talented and likable. Maybe on the Internet, many Vietnamese express their hatred for China. But in real life, Vietnamese people and Chinese people are quite similar. Vietnam has always learned a lot from China. (like the Vietnamese feudalism "learn" Chinese feudalism :v)

Might be because Vietnam has been fighting of Chinese occupation attempts longer than the United States has existed. France had a war, it lost, it admitted defeat and opened diplomatic relations. The United States had a war, it lost, it admitted defeat and opened diplomatic relations. China has declared war, not admitted defeat, opened two-faced diplomatic relations that barely amount to more than threats then try to occupy the land only to lose and have the cycle start all over again. It's been that way since before the west showed up in the region, it went back to that when the west lost there. We were, at best, an alien invasion showing up in a region and at the center of a conflict that had a much longer history than many of our governments. It's a pity we didn't learn this lesson then but maybe we can make up for it a bit by working with the Vietnamese these time around.

On March 13, 1988, China attacked and massacre 48 Vietnamese soldiers station on Gạc Ma island with warships and machine guns without warning. Recently, there are many attacks in which China warship sunk Vietnamese fishing boats and leave the fisherman to dead on the sea. 2/ This is the most unforgiving. lots of information which you have given here contains a lot of incorrect information. Vietnam was independent in 1945, not 1954. The Paracels and Spratlys have never been recognized internationally as China's. The Qing Dynasty of China did not recognize China's sovereignty over the Hoang Sa and Truong Sa. There is a document that the Qing Dynasty does not recognize the sovereignty of the two archipelagoes that are still kept in the British Royal Family. The French have never recognized China's sovereignty. During the colonial period, the French always recognized the two archipelagoes of Truong Sa and Hoang Sa as belonging to Vietnam. so did the Americans and it was the Americans who kept the Spratly and Paracel Islands for Vietnam from 1954 to 1974. Please find out more accurate information before posting it to the public, to avoid misunderstandings.

Vietnamese history is organized by periods of northern (China) domination and resistance. Even though we expanded south, fought, and taken over territories of the Khmer and Champa kingdoms, but we only focus on one enemy in the history book, China. This could be the result of propaganda policies going back more than a millennium as Vietnamese dynasties (sometime of Han Chinese ethnicity: Ngô, Lý, Trần) sought to maintain independence from Chinese dynasties that persistently sought to recreate the empire of the Han and Tang dynasties, which included the area of present day north Vietnam. Oversea Vietnamese hates Communist Vietnamese because of the war, but they are united in their support for Trump because they believe that Trump is f’ing up China.
@traaotuong61074 жыл бұрын
Ngô, Lý and Trần dynasty are not Han Chinese. They are Vietnamese living in Southern China ( used to be Baiyue land and Vietnamese is one of Baiyue ethnics).
@EPluribusUnumSemper4 жыл бұрын
@@traaotuong6107, Technically the story tells us that Vietnamese (Kinh) are from two Baiyue tribes, Âu and Lạc. The DNA shows that they are related to the Dai people who is also related to the Thai. As for Ngô, Lý, and Trần dynasties, you might need to do some more research to add to your understanding. Millennia of propaganda can steer you away from a lot of information. But identity has more to do with what people believe rather than what actually happened. So you’re welcome to continue to believe that there is no Han Chinese dynasties in Vietnamese history and a millennium under Han Chinese rule, from the Han to the Tang dynasties, has no impact. I do have doubt if the Lý dynasty was Han Chinese since Lý Công Uẩn was an orphan, so who really know about his parentage or where his family from. In reality we are all human and what separates us is very tiny. What we think separates us beyond the physical exterior is reinforced by what we think is our culture, language, and history. Those factors can be shaped and influenced for any purpose.

Speak for yourself. I and the vast majority of overseas Vietnamese hate Trump. He's a white supremacist, a pathological liar, a con artist, and a man without a moral compass. It's only Trump worshipping Vietnamese that support Trump. They turned from a pro-democracy anti-VC movement into an anti-democracy anti-China (and therefore pro-VC) movement for Trump. The VC is supposed to be their #1 enemy, but bc of their blind love for Trump, they justified Trump's closeness with the VC by making China their #1 enemy. They even went to DC to attack to the seat of US democracy.

@@phan1182 “Speak for myself”???LOL. All you need to do is look at your own family and I guarantee you’ll find at least one trumpeteer or Q “Annam” devotee. “I and the vast majority of overseas Vietnamese,” really??? Speak for yourself LMAO. Go to little Saigon and see how many Vietnamese there support Trump... Learn how to read with your eyes rather than your emotion, it seems to me you think I’m a Trump supporter. Sure, my previous comment is a bit of a generalization because not all overseas Vietnamese support Trump, I guess that’s why you got a bit sensitive, but the fact is that the majority of the overseas Vietnamese community supports Trump. The majority of them have always been Republicans due to their anti communist stand and they blamed the Democrats for the fall of Saigon. Their support for Trump is not a surprise, they voted for Republicans before, and they still do now. For decades I have heard former officers of ARVN espousing fascist sentiments as they vowed to stamp out any narratives that put them it a poor light with their fist. Their victim-hood narrative is on par with Versailles Treaty for the Nazi and the Black Shirt, “đâm sau lưng chiến sĩ.” I’m old enough to remember them calling up the youth stomp out counter protestors supporting freedom of expression at the Hi-Tek protest in Bolsa. Back in South Vietnam when they were in power, their only interest was to protect the status quo with the elite ruling a corrupt regime. They did little for the people but expect them to bleed for them, “hy sinh vì tổ quốc.” They failed, or didn’t give a fuck, to protect the poor from both the Viet Cong and the American troops. Leaving them to be extorted by the VC at night and burned out by American napalm during the day. Their only fucking excuse was “tại vì lúc đó là chiến tranh.” If you want to know how incompetent the vast majority of those ARVN fuckers were, all you have to do is look at Black April to see how quickly Saigon collapsed. The only people worth memorializing is the 18th Division. It’s really easy for a bunch of fascists to support a fascist. He speaks their language, and I’m not talking about Vietnamese. Anyway, check yourself. GTFOH with that “I and the vast majority” bullshit, and you telling me to speak for myself SMH. Look, I’m glad y’all fucking progressive and all. It’s great to see that since the Vietnamese overseas community is not exactly a bastion of liberalism.

The genocide under the rule of the Congo Free State has been estimated to be half the population of Congo. 10 to 20 million people are the range of estimates. That was about 10 to 20% of Africa's estimated population back then. Pol pot's reign of horror was nothing compared to Leopold II's torture machine that was the Congo Free State.

The Congo Free State was awful...but can you source your 10-20 million estimate? (The sources I’ve found cite a range between 1 and 15 million)
@MegaBanne4 жыл бұрын
@@scott2452 The 20m estimates comes from 1904 book by the name: King Leopold's Rule In Africa. There has been a wide range of estimates. Though the ones bellow 10m has been widely questioned due to the lack of demographic data and the fact that they them selves claim to have likely heavily underestimating the actual death toll. The 20m is not very reliable either. The 10m is the one that is mostly accepted, included by the Belgium government since 1924. heritage/cultural-connection between vietnam and china makes things difficult to describe. viets are yue, as VIETnam is YUEnan in chinese. the people in guangdong and some neighboring provinces are considered Yue Chinese; cantonese is a Yue language. Gin people are basically vietnamese people living in china, as they speak the language but the written form is not the latin version, it's still the one using chinese characters. vietnam is not part of china and shouldn't be, but the connection is clearly there. song dynasty and the dynasties before always go after Dai Viet (vietnam). yes, china did attack korea, central asia, and other places, but not every dynasty tho. for the most part, the unified china would go after viet land. yuan, ming, and qing had different reasons for attacking. the dynasties before attacked as "reconquest" technically. i do know that before qin/han dynasty, southern china used to be populated with full-blooded yue people, but after qin/han conquered yue tribes, the yue people were pretty much mixed after a while. vietnam considers Kingdom of Nanyue as a viet dynasty, but it's half-half (han and viet). it's a weird situation.

As a Vietnamese, to answer your question at the last minutes of video, I would say probably not. Because the sovereignty does really matter to Vietnam now, and it likely outweighs than the universal human right. Vietnamese people were resilient in war, that's right. But Vietnamese people are also tired of war. So, universal human right and war, as long as we can endure, you know the answer.
