My high school required us to take both the ACT and SAT to graduate, so sometimes requirements depend on the high school, too! We were also encouraged to take the tests during our junior year so we would have more opportunities to get a better score.
Many large colleges and universities in the USA no longer give consideration to GPA nor SAT scores for admission.

So what is the selection criteria now?
@darklinaendgame Жыл бұрын
You forgot about the cost of all of these applications and tests! It costs hundreds of dollars to take the ACT and SAT and the subject tests which are basically required for highly selective schools, plus each application also costs money. I wonder how it works in China. 😊

It’s free I remember.

Becuz millions of students each year from urban and rural areas take the same exam on Jun 6&7. It's only fair to all students to be free.

@@tinaliu490 that makes the most sense and is the most fair, I agree. Unfortunately profit comes above common sense in the US.

I (almost) went through both of these pipelines (eventually, I didn't take the Chinese version because I decided to go to the US ). Nowadays it's a bit different, but back then a student chooses between 2 streams in grade 11, either a stem-focused one (Physics+ Chem+ Bio) or Liberal Arts (Politics+Geography/ geology+history). All students are required to take Math, Chinese and English. I was in the "stem stream" and it covered all the subjects in the corresponding SAT subject tests. So I aced the SAT Chem and Physics with minimal prep. Nowadays students have more freedom, so they choose their own subjects and sometimes foreign languages. My niece chose French/ Politics/ Biology and Chem. In terms of difficulty, the Chinese version is always way harder with the sole intention of creating a distribution or curve. And that's because for most students scores would be the only metrics for admission. I think students in the US face a different set of challenges,. They have loads of activity going on, which really test a person's time management skills (and stamina, lol). But overall, the curriculum in China is available to every student. The varied quality of teaching, though, is an issue in both countries.

Fun fact, the logo of SAT in thumbnail (4 blue dots) is actually from SAT Mexico (Servicio de Administración Tributaria) which is the IRS of Mexico lol
Guo Wai --- foreign --- outside of China. You mean, there are two countries of the world, which are China, and the country, called not-China. I love the fairness of China's Gao Kao. Though Math test in my year 1984 was epic. When your answer is wrong, your mark is deducted from the mark you have earned previously. There are some people went to Bei Da, Qing Hua, Jiao Da, ... ext. those top schools. The highest math mark of my high school was 62 with the full mark 120. Some people got 20's/120 in math and went to universities. I mean I love the fairness of Gao Kao, not because I had an easy one. I still love it.

@@woodwater9882 The higher intelligent quotient you have -- the smarter you are, the more you love the China's system. In Canada, Jared's country, if you want to apply medical school or law school, the first 15 credits' scores of undergraduate courses you can use only to compete. The competitive level is not any less than Gao Kao of China. It is equally competitive when you apply graduate schools. Since Jared hasn't climbed up to this level, this topic isn't suitable for him.
