I am an American in Cebu, Philippines. One of the things that shocked me when I retired here is the poverty. The minimum wage here was just raised to 610 pesos ($10.38) per day. I would say that the Filipinos are better off than the chinese, by comparison. There is a reason why millions of chinese have come to the Philippines. It makes you understand why Filipinos are happy to take a job working remotely in a call center for an American company for $4 per hour when you consider the minimum wage here.
@angelachouinard4581Ай бұрын
Every time I talk to call centers I feel bad, the voices sound so young and I know they make them follow a script and they have no real power to help customers. But they do their best and I always try to tell them they did a good job and helped me as best they could. Filipinos are such great people.
@triadwarfareАй бұрын
That's the advantage of a low cost of living. Food is cheap, at least relatively compared to the west. Unfortunately, some products like cheese would be too unaffordable for the common Filipino to afford, so they have to make some compromises, like using "processed cheese food" more fake than American cheese, and using Banana Catsup with heavy food coloring to make it look like traditional tomato ketchup, and milk options are either UHT or powder, and the normal pasteurized milk is only reserved for posh grocery stores with infrequent deliveries. Also, the key to having a low cost of living for the rest of the country to be "wage competitive" is to make sure prices of basic goods and services to be as low as possible, even at the expense of the farmer. I find it disgusting that farmers in Europe have effective control over their own government blocking Ukranian grain, even if it's just passing through, and this is why the cost of living there is way too high.
@allenl9214Ай бұрын

No, they aren't. Objectively. Also, China has self-determination, Philippines does not (it was genod, and colon... by the us and used as a base due to its geographic importance). That sounds awful, so many people in China living in poverty. But be careful of comparing income with Western income. What people earn (the minimum wage) in Thailand and other SE Asian countries is the same as in China. Professionals don’t earn much more, maybe 2-3 times minimum wage. Most people live with their family, so rent is low; or you can rent a room for $50-$60. People earning $350/month often share a room + costs (so may $50 each for accommodation). Food is getting pricey now, maybe you can just get by on $5/day. Compared with the UK, where minimum (median) wage after taxes is around £1,500/month and rent + utilities + (more) taxes (if you share) is £600/month, with food costing around £10/day and transport (to work) is another £100/month, you can see that British people aren’t significantly better off.

But in China those homeless people are mostly harder working people came from countryside/ small towns trying to make a living by searching opportunities in the cities… it’s so sad people don’t looking the real cause behind this, they just saw USA and western countries also got beggars and homeless people then they find excuses for China…😢

You are missing the point. American journalists and citizens are ALLOWED to show the worst of U.S. to their fellow Americans and the world. China is allowed to promote its fabricated image to the world, including United States. Contents made by China criticizing U.S. is allowed to be shown in U.S., and U.S. government does not have a propaganda budget to show the worst of China. While Chinese journalists and citizens are BANNED from showing the worst of China both outside and inside the walls of China, and foreign criticism of China are BANNED within China, and THE STATE has a propaganda machine showing only the worst of U.S. to Chinese.

I worked as a designer in a huge mega textile factory in Shaoxing and my boss forbade me to go visit the buildings. One day I did go and was shocked. The main building was a huge shell with at one end a ping pong table where people in padded coats checked rolls of fabric with just a single electric bulb hanging down from the roof ! In another buidling each floor was a concrete slab and people were camping there, cooking on open fires on the slab and sleeping everywhere. They had a water hose and pails for their waste. Incredible. It was all about how big it was, how impressive but behind there was nothing.

Unsurprisingly, there are a lot of poor family in China due to large population. However, there are lots of middle class and the rich as well. There are many countries in the world, so China needs not only sales it's products to the US, but it can also sales it's products to the other countries in the world. As long as the products can be produced and sale, Chinese economy can be recovered. It just takes time, but I think that it is manageable. Don't underestimate the power of human capital in China.

It's seeing things like this that I've toned down my complaints at work. Sure, i definitely deserve a pay increase after the amount of work I do almost doubled, but not getting that extra 2 dollars to my pay rate isn't the difference between paying my bills or eating. I still live comfortably well and can even put 200$ or so into savings as well, even with my monthly expenses and what I buy for myself. I'm not wealthy and can't just buy everything I want or see, but it's a hell of a lot better than working my ass off than a good deal of people. My heart goes out to those in china, suffering under the rule of such an incompetent government. I do hope something changes one day, but that's either after Xi jinpings' death or the CCPS collapse, and there's no telling when that would happen.
