I'm sure you would notice some slight discrepancies between the orchestration of the recording and the score (which is taken from the actual opera score), I wonder if anyone knows the reason. 0:00 I. Allegretto (Scene 1) 2:53 II. Allegro con brio (Scene 2) 4:48 III. Largo (Scene 4) "Passacaglia" 13:21 IV. Allegretto (Scene 6) 14:59 V. Presto (Scene 7)

I am an long time follower of Shostakovich but not a musician. I believe the audio recording is the suite from the Lady Macbeth. His version *Katerina Ismailova" did not have a xylophone in the orchestration

Also noticed a couple of what seem like liberties with dynamics. My favorite has to be the tuba hitting the "piano"-marked Ab in m112 like a SWAT team kicking down a door.

@@m2v_streaming_channel406I think Lady Macbeth has different interludes? according to the Wikipedia article at least. when i was finding Lady Macbeth interludes, the first one was completely different

@@AndewMole It does indeed ... he completely rewrote the first interlude and drastically changed the fifth one (although it starts in the same way as the original) for Katerina Ismailova. The other three are more or less the same as the original Lady Macbeth opera with some changes in orchestration (normally less percussion, e.g. there is a lot less xylophone in this score).

@@AndewMole, Shostakovich effectively composed this "twice". The first time, it was called Lady Macbeth (Op 29) and second time round it was called Katerina Izmailova (Op. 114) where it is documented that he made modifications to the original score and renamed it as such to distance the work from its controversial past - that being when he was literally threatened directly by Stalin where Pravda published "Muddle Instead of Music" harshly condemning Shostakovich's work and himself.

Always cool to see where the roots of Shostakovich's music are. I hear a lot of material which was later developed in the 10th and 4th symphony, and not only.
