I did the same thing to my Brice 6 string. It sounded horrible when I found it at the Pawn Shop, but the neck felt great and the fret work was top notch. I figured it had potential and I bought it. For those of you who are interested: I installed EMG pickups and EQ , Hipshot brass bridge. I changed the pickup location to the 70s fender jazz position.That was huge. I also took a graph tech nut blank and shaped it to fit. Seemingly insignificant but again, big improvement in tone.True oil finish on the rosewood fingerboard. Unusual, but it sounds more like maple now. Very much like my 74 Fender Jazz . I eliminated the string through, put a maple block in it's place underneath the bridge. In other words I totally went to town with this thing. Still under 1000.- and it is a beast. People always ask me what kind of bass that is and how good it sounds. And I tell them that it's just a cheap Chinese bass that I found at the pawn shop. :)

Hey man cool video I'm glad you put it out there I have a fake fordera as well that I bought off a friend who didn't want it for $150. It didn't work at all so after a year just letting it sit in my closet I decided to put a little money into it I spent around $500 got emg soapbar pickups Bart preamp and 3 coil tap switches the base is absolutely amazing now!! I don't know why people hating most of the people that's against people buying what these instruments don't even own a $12,000 fodera and don't even plan on buying one. I think fodera are great basses but I can come up with a couple of hundred dollars to buy a bass alot easier then go spend $12,000 on top of that almost every bass that we (bass kats)play especially Jazz basses ARE copies of fenders and so it's really a bunch of Hypocrites out there!!

I call mine a Chindera.. it's a neck thru body of Maple and Walnut and it definitely needed a few things done to it make it really playable especially a fret level , better nut, better rewiring but I had expect to have to put another $450.00 in it to get it to what I wanted it to sound and feel like but that was the beauty of it IMO.. so I added a real Wilkerson gold brass bridge , Bartolini 59 J's pickups and a old Sadowsky Preamp I bought of a fellow player about 15 years ago for $70 bucks.. what's weird is that the fb is real rosewood with real abalone block inlay and it probably weighs about 10.5 lbs and as you stated the tuners are fine ..nonetheless it sounds really good for what it is..but that was the beauty of it IMO.. so I added a real Wilkerson gold brass bridge , Bartolini 59 J's pickups and a old Sadowsky Preamp I bought of a fellow player about 15 years ago for $70 bucks.. what's weird is that the fb is real rosewood with real abalone block inlay and it probably weighs about 10.5 lbs and as you stated the tuners are fine ..nonetheless it sounds really good for what it is.. Great video, great playing, the worry I have is the precedent that these basses are setting, in this case you’ve used a very extreme example, as the original is so much more expensive and the build quality is so much better, but when you get to the cheaper basses they copy there won’t be as much difference, that’s when these illegal copies start becoming dangerous to the original companies.

Okay, so I realize I'm really late to this party. Maybe even a bit more than fashionably. However, you seem like the go to guy to ask, so here it is. I've been playing guitar for over 30 years, having grown up a total 80's metal head. Now I have a 14 year old son who I'd love to get started on the bass to see if he takes to it. Just mentioning it to him he claims he isn't really interested, but then again neither was I when my parents bought me my first guitar, and here I am 45 years later still playing. However, my son isn't me, and there's a pretty good change I might be shelling out the cash for him to use it as a corner prop in his bedroom. On the flip side, if HE doesn't take to it, then at least I'll have a bass if I ever want to do any writing and recording. So my question is what would be a great first bass for as little cash as possible, AND what would be a good starter bass practice amp that isn't going to sound like we're playing through a tin can? I mean, as for budget, I'd like to spend no more than $250 to $300. At least that's what I can probably convince my wife to spend on it since there's a huge chance our son won't take to it. He does love music though, so I have a feeling once I show him a couple of simple things, he'll be off and running. I mean, we all remember the feeling of learning that very first riff. It was almost like discovering you have a super power you didn't know you had. Anyway, sorry for rambling, but I'd appreciate if someone could help me out with this, as I know plenty about 6 string guitars, but literally NOTHING about bass guitars.
@caddelworth4 жыл бұрын
It's a real pity you couldn't DI the bass. Apart from B sounding generally "beefier" in tone, unfortunately both before and after sound like a bass being played from across the room! Still, it really shows how those of us on a budget can get a danged good sound by replacing the cruddy parts with quality parts. I still have to think about pickups etc. on my '74 Ibanez R--k copy, but the GraphTech Black Tusq nut (about $10) made a crazy big difference for the money, ditto the Hipshot bridge (about $150) - TRULY adjustable unlike the horrible pot metal original - transformed the tuning up and down the neck, and I recently swapped out the tuners for Gotohs which were the only ones that matched my bass fittings (about $90). So a total of about $250 in upgrades over the past year or two, plus decent strings of course (Thomastik JF344s are my weapons of choice) have made my already much-loved instrument into something even nicer to play and to listen to, even if my acoustic-bass-high action invariably gets me into big arguments with luthiers >sigh

GReat channel and reveiw. Guitar player here looking for a cheap bass just to mess around with. For that price I think it is great right out of the box. Add some mods down the road and it should do the trick. Sounds like you have some Mark KIng influence there.
Im not saying this is a great bass. But the people who own a proper Fodera MUST be thinking. Hmmm. If this is lets say $700 with the upgrades, sounds great. Where did my $13000 go.? I repeat...... $13000. Oh it must be the build quality it must be this it must be that. No your paying for the name. There is no way on the earth that a Fodera is worth well over $4000 more (in terms of build quality) than lets say a Sadowsky NYC or a Celinder, or a Smith. Its just nonsense. And the people who buy them are falling for it. IMO.

I just saw a video with Scott Devine where he did a blindfold test. Fodera against a Sire. Not knowing which was which, I liked the Sire's sound better. And that was with just the front pickup. So there are many other sounds available. The Fodera only has one pickup and no tone controls.

You are paying for a workshop and its employees and owners to stay in business. Whether that is worth $12k for the consumer, who knows. It could pressure them to open an overseas line, if enough people bailed.
@Autos_ena_miden5 жыл бұрын
Not a single a bass can cost more than 3-4.000 bucks. It's just the butterfly on the headstock and Victor Wooten's great skills that walked hand in hand with this brand. And, NO, there are not plenty of people on this planet who can bail 13-14-15.000 bucks in a blink of an eye, in order to watch the prices go down. And to be honest, i'm not sure that when they see plenty of people giving that huge amount of money, that they will lower their price tags.
@CordScott5 жыл бұрын
@@bradbarker4041 Well, they've been things like this since 1983, so I guess its working for them. The real reason they can sell basses for $13k is that enough people, for a few decades now, are willing to pay it. Their cost to produce it is irrelevant if people are willing to pay that price. Sometimes the worst thing a boutique/high-end brand can do is make a budget version. It kills the mystique.

Foderas are like Rolex watches. They're no better than a watch costing a fraction of the price but people who own them think that others are envious of them. So a faux Fodera is like a faux Rolex. It's even lamer because it's trying to be pretentious and being doubly phony. But hey, you sound good and if the bass delivers, why not? But I'd change the headstock logo and just call it a custom made bass. That's classier.
@bdking575 жыл бұрын
Nelson, you should get informed. Rolex watches are worth every penny more then lesser brands. but Rolex isnt a top brand in watches. Its just funny that reality is different then what you believe/ People that can afflrd a Rolex know that rolex is just an entry level luxury watch. Same goes with basses. If you want to live in some ridiculous state of denial unable to except that hand built instruments arent really any better then some mass produced production line garbage just so you can feel better about the situation dont expect us all to jump in that boat with you. There is in fact such a dramatic drop off in quality with nice baases. The actually time and effort put into something generally is at its lowest point on the discount end.
@NelsonMontana12345 жыл бұрын
@@bdking57 You seem confused Brian. Let me simplify it. I use the comparison of a Rolex as an example, not the gold standard. ( I actually have a Vacherone Constantin). And these days it's just jewelry. They tell no better time than a $200 watch. You're also wrong about the "hand built" concept though I understand your being ill informed. It's a common misconception. ALL basses are in part hand made and ALL basses are in part made with machines. Better models use better parts and more selective wood for the necks and fingerboard, But they're not hand carving those! They go through a lathe, just like a Squier does. It's also funny that some of the greatest recordings by the greatest bassists are on stock instruments. Well, at least those who had to buy them themselves. Wooten and Anthony Jackson had theirs custom made by Fodera for free and honestly as amazing as they are, as players, their sound is nothing special. I think Anthony sounded better on the 4 string Gibson. The Fodera has been around for over 30 years and who's talking about that great Fodera sound? It's just snob appeal and you bought into it. Don't be a sucker. I've owned many basses, including a Fodera and I will say to anyone who is listening, they are nothing all that great. At all. But feel free to pay ten times more than they're worth if that makes you feel better.
