Those two definitions are similar to "continuous" and "continual" in English, which some people think are the same, but are not. In manufacturing we can speak of Continuous Improvement, meaning it doesn't stop and start. It's a state of mind, a culture of continuous (non-stopping) improvement. I need to study Mandarin continuously to improve. I stopped studying Mandarin for 13 years. That was not good.

And continual means persisting generally, but allowing for intermittent pauses. I have studied Chinese continually for some years now--meaning overall non-stop. But I do sleep in between study sessions. On the other hand, the Earth orbits the Sun continuously--truly nonstop. As you point out, 总是 is similar to continual. 总 means generally. 一直 means straight through, thus without deviating even momentarily.

我的狗一直生病。 我的狗总是生病。I recently completed the DuoLingo Mandarin course. One of these sentences was used as a translation for “My dog keeps getting sick.” I know which one it was but I wonder which one you think is correct.

both correct, but little different focus. 我的狗一直生病。 the dog has been sick and hasn't recovered. 我的狗总是生病。the dog was sick, then recovered, but soon later, got sick again.

Of course, if the dog would be immunodeficient , there is permanent desease provoking allways new opportunistic infections...but that seems me to "far inside specialised science"..., and not a common topic.

@@yiminchinese thank you! The English translation would suggest the second one, so Duolingo has it wrong, then. “Keeps getting sick” implies that he is getting better but then gets sick again.

I think that this usage of "keeps" in English means that the action happens repeatedly, over and over. It is not continuous. I think that 我的狗一直生病 means that the dog is continuously sick, so I think this would be incorrect for "My dog keeps getting sick". I think that saying 我的狗总是生病 is the same as saying "My dog is always sick". In both Chinese and English, this could mean that the dog is repeatedly sick. Perhaps a more accurate Chinese translation for "My dog keeps getting sick" would be 我的狗屡生病 or 我的狗反复生病.
