Maybe this is a NYC thing in general? When I lived there people helped me with the languages I was learning all the time. Now that I'm back home, native speakers just treat me like I'm stupid. I get that people going about their days don't owe language learners the labor of a free impromptu lesson, but I do wish more people I met here were more inclined to help when they see other people trying. I definitely don't want people fawning over me while I speak their language (poorly), I just want to know what I'm doing wrong so I can be less cringey lol

The Spanish only speakers who have lived here their whole lives are a lot more rude with my Spanish than those who immigrated here and don’t know any English. Though my Spanish is very proper they help me through a lot of the slang and will be more patient while speaking slower to me.

Taishanese was the second most spoken dialect in Hong Kong. Even though I was born in Hong Kong, I tell most people that I am Taishonese so they know which dialect I speak. My parents were always questioned why my siblings and I were not taught standard Cantonese (Hong Kong dialect). Watching Xiaoma shows us why it's important to preserve our heritage and not allow languages or dialects die.

Nah, he does switch but it’s understandable because Taishanese 1. has a bunch of unique phrases/way of saying things but at the same time can sound very similar to Mandarin or Cantonese and 2. has so many variations within the dialect itself(eg. my parents pronounce the “子” character very differently despite both speaking Taishanese(“gee” vs “doo”))

You're a beautiful person in ways that others aren't. don't be so hard on yourself about your physical appearance. You have to remember that not all cultures are focused on physical aspects of beauty. some cultures are deeply involved in energy/chi (your vibe as a person basically) Love the videos man!

Hardly anyone speaks Taishan except the elders. My dad is from there and it's like the equivalent to the projects. I've been there a while ago and parts of it is like time stood still.

But there were people who still lived around there because we saw chickens running around. Those people who lived there probably don't know much about the outside world. I guess they took the red pill. The story of how my dad made it out of there is pretty astounding. It should be made into a movie.

All love and appreciation for the effort you put in to learn new cultures. The Toisan community is one of the earliest Chinese settlers in the US. These families can be traced back to over 11,000 Chinese workers hired by the Central Pacific Railroad company. Today, descendents of these families and related families who immigrated later are the backbone of the original Chinese and Chinatown communities. They play a significant role in the presence of the Asian American community in the United States.

💯 Toisan community is one of the earliest Chinese settlers in America. Basically one of the OG or is the OG of the Asian American community. Been here since the late 1800s (coolies, built the railroad, the gold rush, Chinese exclusion act,etc.).

A lot of foreigner is able to speak Cantonese and Mandarin but you are really another level up. An European able to speak the dialect of Toishan is extraordinary. I know how to speak Hoi Ping dialect which is quite close to the dialect of Toishan. That's why I know how difficult it is to speak Taishanese dialect.

So glad you're hitting up the Toisan community. My parents and many of my relatives came over to the US from Toisan back in the 1940s & 50s. I grew up speaking it, but it gradually faded as I got older. Wish I would have kept it up, would have liked to have been able to speak to my grandmother as an adult and ask her about life in China.

Don't feel too guilty because 'keeping it up' usually requires cooperation from other people to be successful. But the main point is research has shown that you never really forget. The longer it goes without use, the longer it takes to come back. Put on radio and tv programs and play it as background 'music'. You don't have to consciously focus. Just having the language hitting your brain will kickstart the process. Give yourself time. Don't expect anything for at least 3 or 4 weeks, maybe longer. But don't worry. It'll come back eventually. 😊

Vancouver too! Some of the newer immigrants from HK/Mainland china sometimes are surprised to hear that my grandparents spoke Toisanese, saying things like 'That's very uncommon' and I'm like.. all these older Toisanese folks paved the road for y'all to be here!

@@hailhummus I was born in Vancouver circa 1961, most of my friends had Hoisan (Toisan) backgrounds and could speak it, as to myself, my father was from Sun Wui, close to Toisan and he spoke a similar dialect. After 1967, with the influx of Hong Kong immigrants standard Cantonese became dominant, and now it is the "Marble Mumblers" Mandarins who are taking over.😐

In our (excellent and funny) Chinese class, a lot of examples are about eating food 吃饭 and about being 胖 "pang" - afterwards, you are always hungry 😅! Hey Xiaoma, can you go to Pittsburgh and speak Pittsburghese (aka Yinzer)? I’m not even joking lol! A real, thick Pittsburgh accent is like it’s own language. We also have our own vocabulary, grammar, rhythm, tone, pitch, etc.

It's really great to see someone trying to learn a dialect that is slowly dying out. I'm born in Canada from Taishan/Hoiping speaking parents. Lived with 3 grandparents at one point. So I can confidently say, I speak semi-fluent Taishanese. You're doing a great job! One tip I recommend is elongating the sounds a little when speaking taishanese. We tend to draw out every sound ever so slightly. Similar to Japanese saying ojiisan (grandfather) compared to ojisan (uncle) the slight drawl of the "i" sound makes a huge difference. This happens almost every word in taishanese.

Just curious.... I was around a lot of Polish until age 5 or so. I internalized the proonunciation and most of the grammar. So when I speak it today, most people think my skill is much higher than it really is. They can't understand how I can have such speaking skills without the ear to match. Has this ever happened to you?

These videos where you speak Chinese with the people in China Town are my favorite! You should do a road trip with your wife and son to visit some of the different China towns across the US. Just about nobody not Chinese speaks mandarin or any other Chinese dialect in the Midwest, I can only imagine what everyone's reaction would be if you were in Arkansas speaking Mandarin to the local Chinese people!😂
