Thai is such a fun language - 5 different tones. Years ago, I tried to say "mother-in-law" to my new mother-in-law but instead I managed to call her, "big dog". My father-in-law thought it was hilarious. But being quick witted, I told him and my mother-in-law that Big Dog in English can also be slang for "the boss". He stopped laughing... To this day I still call her Big Dog.

I empathise with you… I attempted to tell my very traditional Sicilian father in law that he grows great fennel ( for the salad) But instead I told him that he would make a really good homosexual… Needless to say he had steam coming out his ears for a second until he realised it was just that my phrasing was a bit off… my mother-in-law and husband were rolling on the floor. She used to tease him to go to the vegetable patch and bring his boyfriend back with him so she could make the salad… I was mortified and never tried to speak Italian in front of him again.

This reminds me of 30 years ago. I took four years of Japanese in high school. It was all the rage around Detroit in the 90’s. My teacher was a woman from the Kansai region. Very strict. We learned about 900 Kanji in four years. I went on to live there for a few years. First reaction I got from people typically was amazement that I could read and fairly well. But inevitably as I got to know them, the jokes followed. I didn’t just learn the language from her, but her way of saying things and her mannerisms as well; which I quickly came to understand were distinctly feminine and countryside. In other words I was acting like the equivalent of an outspoken southern woman. No matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t shake any of it. It became a running joke, because I was also 6’2” nearing 200 pounds and would play any sport to amuse myself. It was clearly a source of endless amusement wherever I went.

This channel made me tell my parents to start speaking to me in Tagalog every day. My whole life they would turn to me and speak English, so I never learned and had given up. 27 years of turning to me and speaking English, to tell them to speak to me in Tagalog is difficult for them, but I understand what they are saying and I am surprised at how fast I’m picking up speaking it. I lived in Bangkok on diplomatic travel for 4 years. This made me miss what I still consider my 2nd home even though its been 10 years now since I left. I didn't think I would get emotional watching you travel around Thailand. I remember riding the BTS (above ground Metro) and i was speaking english with another american. We were about to get off at the next stop when i over heard a thai woman and her friend start talking about how the two foreigners "farangs" were in there way and that they wouldnt get through. I politely turn around and in Thai told them that we were getting off at the next station and she didnt have to worry. Her face was so priceless and the entire train got quiet hahahahah. She was so embarrassed.

That reminds me of Korea. This is before the whole Kpop fad took off the last few years. I was really into Korean since about 2001 because of a kind of Daoist Korean tai chi and my first Korean gf in the states. SO I went back and forth to korea at least 6 times and ended up working there for awhile. And taking the language in college. Anyway. I was on the subway late at night maybe around midnight in Seoul and a drunk homeless man was shouting and cursing at quiet skinny 20 something me sitting on the bench minding my own business. effing foreigners and effing this country and we are evil. I just said to him something like 'sir i understand everything you are saying and you are being really noisy for everyone' he felt so ashamed and people kind of clapped.

It's incredibly normal for friendly people to laugh at some weird pronunciation... also they corrected him, that's how you improve your language, learning while having a laugh. I'm from Brazil and our pronunciation is very difficult for english speakers at first, I can't count how many times I've made fun of friends but also correcting them afterwards, that's just how it goes.

@@01DOGG01 Yeah, without being here, I really struggled. I spent about 45 minutes just after lunch talking to a random dude at a park and about 30 minutes with our neighbors just now. The only way to really learn to speak Thai is to learn to read as well because the transliteration is always close, but never right. And be in Thailand.....that's very helpful also.

@@chrisdavisunofficial I'm very ashamed to say that I've been in Thailand for almost 3 years now, on top of coming here many times before that, yet can't even compete with this guy that studied it for a couple of weeks. It doesn't help that the wife is Thai and we obviously communicate in English. The local corner shops speak very good English, the neighbour as well, all having spent time abroad, so every time that I actually need something in Thai I ask the wife. Horse, dog, come... Ma, ma, ma lol it's hard for me. And there are so many things much harder than that. And I haven't even started on the script... Yikes!

I am a casino dealer. In the course of any day, I run into probably about 4 or 5 different language opportunities with regulars. I LOVE hearing an accent and finding out what languages they speak. Then I make an effort to greet them next time with at least a "hello", "long time, no see", "thank you" and "bye" in their language. Today I just did it in Thai and the smile and reactions are worth the minimal effort. I do know conversational levels in a few languages but there is nothing wrong with at least learning a few "opening lines" in many different ones. (BTW, hello in Thai sounds like "sah-wah-dee"). People appreciate it so much and they honestly seek me out when they come in again (and yes, they do tend to tip better because of it but honestly that is just icing on the cake as I really enjoy the interaction more).

I'm a white guy semi-fluent in Thai and haven't gotten reactions like this from Thai people in suchhh a long time. It's funny how when you're a beginner making an effort, people find it really charming and give you so many compliments. But when you speak fluently, people just assume you've been living there a long time and don't care much. I find it depends on where you go. In Bangkok I barely get any reactions, although every now and then I get asked if I'm a ลูกครึ่ง (luuk-krung, half-child) even though I don't look Thai at all 555 But if I go somewhere where there's lots of farangs like Koh Samui/Phuket/etc people still get pretty surprised. Also people assume I'm an English teacher quite often too

Thai is a hard language to learn. It’s tonal. Your attempt to say “corn and coconut” is an example. If you get the tone wrong, the word has an entirely different meaning. My wife is Thai, we’ve been together 10 years, married for 8, I’m around her family and friends often, been to Thailand a couple times, and still your Thai is better than mine.

Yup, my mother's side is Chinese via Thailand (she was born in Bangkok's Chinatown so this was especially cool for me to watch) and she liked to emphasize the over-simplicity of English by saying Thai has "44 letters - and 22 vowels!"

You can find if you know a good place, I went down to Galveston once, right on the Texas Louisiana border to have some Cajun food, they make it pretty hot, atleast if you use hot sauce. It’s not that Thai food is the spiciest, cause their is those crazy hot sauces that are made less for eating more for KZbin videos. But that Thai food seems to have a naturally high average spice level across the cultures many dishes

I speak pretty broken tourist thai, it is really nice getting a response when I ask for things in thai, normally food. Sitting with the locals and trying a bit means they correct you on how "they" speak rather than the formal way the likes of pimsleur teach you. For example I was told not to say Mai Chi khrap (no) when somebody offered me something, the lady sitting with me said " Say Mai Ao its politer" - best way to improve sit down and try.

Mai chai actually means that something is incorrect, like if someone asks you "Are you Thai?" then you can answer with Mai chai, meaning that no, I'm not Thai. Mai ao means no take, meaning that you won't take/accept something (ao means to take/get/accept, and can be used as a slang for f*ck as well)

I spent two months in Thailand in 2017 and had an amazing time. I studied a little bit of Thai, enough to help me find my way when I got lost. feels good to learn a tonal language, being so different from English phonetically People were so wonderful there, the food amazing. I spent some time in Malaysia and learned an interesting fact. I was told that the closer you get to the equator the hotter the food. The reason was explained to me that in hot humid climates food tends to spoil quickly and hot spices help make the food more edible.

C'est bizarre non ? juste ne pas être convaincu par les arguments de Mohammed serait plus grave que de trucider des gens ? L'explication est simple : Ses pires ennemis étaient des polythéistes donc pour galvaniser ses troupes, les motiver à prendre les armes, il a inventé cette histoire "Le polythéisme est le truc le plus grave selon Allah" et tous les mecs autour de lui avaient la bave qui coulait en mode "On va les démonter" Ou pourquoi est ce qu'il a descendu ce verset (coran 33:73) dans lequel il est dit qu'Allah lui donne l'autorisation d'épouser la femme de son fils adoptif ? Parce que Mohammed assumait pas d'avoir envie de sa belle fille et qu'il fallait qu'il s'envoi un petit message divin pour officialiser tout ça . Ou pourquoi Mohammed a dit "si Allah vous éprouve c'est parce qu'il vous aime" C'est parce que les péons qui le suivaient se sont vite rendus compte que malgré qu'ils suivent le messager divin, il continuaient de leur arriver des malheurs (maladie, accidents) Et Mohammed a dut justifier ça et il a sorti la phrase qui le sortait du pétrin "Si il vous arrive des trucs c 'est parce qu'Allah vous éprouve"

I noticed that the way you speak Thai (flow, pitch, intonation, etc.) is similar to the way you speak Chinese. I recommend to everyone that when you’re learning a new language to not take reference from the languages that you’re already familiar with. Think of it as a totally new idea and concept that shouldn’t always be connected to your mother tongue(s) Been following you for years and I’m very impressed at how you communicate to and surprise Chinese speaking people with your Chinese skills though. But as a bilingual Thai/English speaker who’s taught English for many years, I suggest that if you want to improve your Thai, make sure that you 1) practice the tones and 2) listening to the flow of speech of native Thai speakers. Another thing to mention is that the majority of Thai-Chinese that is 3rd to 4th generation have already lost their ability to speak Chinese/usually Tajeaw or Hakka origin so most of the time they’re not familiar at all with mandarin unless they have to deal with mainland/Taiwan for business or something. Love and respect you Xiaoma and I love to see you improve on your Thai!

I've always thought that Thai was one of the most beautiful languages in the world. Any time I've heard it spoken in a movie I thought it was absolutely musical. I would love to learn it, but I don't think I'd have any occasion to use it as I don't even know anyone from Thailand.
