Video Correction!!! In this video I said that you can reduce friction by reducing the surface area, but that is a incorrect statement. The reason changing the position of the washers worked so well was due to the washer and steel arm having smooth surfaces. Unlike the other placement that had the smooth steel arm rubbing against the rough cast iron frame. Check out Roland Sawicki comment below for more details. 👍📢
@jonmonte9977

I believe Mr. Sawiki is right and wrong at the same time...the coefficient of friction depends on the surface types that are contacting each other...a Smooth 2" washer on the rough cast iron surface has More friction than a 1" washer would...and like he said the more force you apply to the nut will increase friction further...

A few days ago I received my sewing machine. Your videos have been a tremendous help as not much has changed in the machine since you made the tutorials. I also used 240 grit sandpaper to knock off the burrs on the track edges on the backside of the 'drive' wheel. That sure made the operation smoother too. Thanks for the other helpful mods.

Your videos have really helped me with my machine. However, I was having a problem that I don't believe I seen in your videos ( or any other ) that may be of help to others. I couldn't get a straight stitch no matter what I did. Beside having a problem with going straight, the stitch itself would be at a angle like using a " twist needle ". After close and slow examination I spotted the problem. The hole where the needle enters the sewing arm was off center. What would happen is that the very tip if the needle would enter the hole, but as it passed through, the needle would move to the left. After it came out it would straighten out and as it progressed happen again with every stroke. This not only caused a problem going straight but also having every stitch itself angled as stated above. I took a tiny diamond burr bit and put it in my Dremel . I only did the area that would allow the needle to pass through the hole without making any contact with the side of the hole . I hope this may have helped someone that may have had the same problem as I did and didn't spot the cause.
@MainelyAcresFarmBrooks
@MainelyAcresFarmBrooks 5 жыл бұрын
You could have lessened the screws holding the sewing bar in place, then lowered the needle and tighten back up. That way it would be properly aligned.

Mainly Acres...Wow! This is just what I needed to see as proceed to use 1.3mm leather for my vintage 67 C10 truck. I have a Juki single needle lock stitch but can't get the length of stitch I would like. While only so much can be learned from a video, your's is very good. I say this as I like reading comments and you are a jewel for answering them. This is rare on youtube as they throw up a video, and walk away from it. Great info, links I will follow and sponge up more info. Not only liked, but subscribed because of communication below and in the video. I can not thank you enough for this piece of your efforts. All machines made by man are not perfect as this overseas product could be part of an Oldsmobile I worked on in the 70's that got melted down and re-cast. Thanks for the videos, I am currently thinking about buying one of those machines. I can‘t help I am an engineer so I need to make one comment. Friction is not depending on the surface area. Friction force is a combination of the force applied and a constant that factors in material combinations / roughness of the surfaces. As you did with smoothing the surfaces of the bobbin with the dremel.
@MainelyAcresFarmBrooks
@MainelyAcresFarmBrooks 5 жыл бұрын
So your saying that reducing the surface area of two metals making contact (causing friction) will not reduce the overall friction?
@MainelyAcresFarmBrooks
@MainelyAcresFarmBrooks 5 жыл бұрын
fric·tion /ˈfrikSH(ə)n/ noun the resistance that one surface or object encounters when moving over another Or the action of one surface or object rubbing against another. If you reduce the area of the two surfaces that are rubbing against each other shouldn't that reduce the fiction?
@MainelyAcresFarmBrooks
@MainelyAcresFarmBrooks 5 жыл бұрын
I understand what your saying about "force applied and a constant that factors in material combinations / roughness of the surfaces". I agree, just can't get my head around the surface area. This is a good comment to get the old noggin working, thanks.
@Rsama60
@Rsama60 5 жыл бұрын
I am not saying that. The laws of physics say that. Look at the formula for friction force. Friction force (Ff) = coefficient of friction (μ) x normal force (Fn). So surface area is not contained in the formula and so has no impact. The coefficient describes how the surfaces interact or in other words the material combinations, the roughness of the surfaces etc. You solved this by putting the washer in-between the arm and the cast iron, different material with different roughness. If you use a bronze washer you might improve it even more. Or smooth the cast iron. The normal force is impacted by how tight you fasten the screw. I think you used a lock nut and kept it fairly loose. It is getting more complicated when you want to calculate the required force to tighten a connection with screws. But also those formulas contain no surface area.

All the vids I see of people fixing these to work better all report different problems. seems the QC on these is pretty bad. they are slapped together but still a great machine if you get it tweaked up..the price is right. but if you are unfamiliar with how this machine operates or mechanical inclined it might prove frustrating to get it working well. mine has binding at the pillow block bearing, seems it was skewed and screwed down hard. but loosning the bolts and aligning it fixed that..pluss, my needle shaft was very ruff feeling going up and down..I took it off and went over it with 400 wet dry sandpaper and that smoothed it out . also my bobbin gear was in wrong and out of timming, needle was broken out of the box too but they gave me like ten replacements. I did not have the washer problem as you described. again tolerances are all over the place with these. But one of the cam lobs the bearing on it does not even touch the arm because it's cocked sideways a bit. And really ruff finished. I had to file away the edge to get it to work right. Otherwise if you take some time to get it all setup it's a great machine. But I think no two are going to have the same problem. Hopefully with all us users out here tips and tricks will come in. So thanks for your time doing these videos they are helping. I might also do a vid on what I found.

Thanks for the video. Help! I still can't get the bobbin thread to pull up. I sanded the whole bobbin shuttle down. I've watched several videos on how to thread the machine and bobbin. I finally figured that the bobbin thread goes behind the thread spring. Tried several tension options. The bobbin thread still won't pick up. If I hold the bobbin thread slightly then run a cycle through the machine, it brings thread on the other side of the needle. However, it still doesn't pick up the bobbin thread. Any ideas?

I find that I run out of thread in the bobbin very quickly. I've been thinking about drilling a hole in the bottom of the bobbin area and threading the thread thought that into the shuttle. Do you think that would work?

you might get away with that if you went straight up the middle of the bobin holder gear I think there is a hole already through that small gear but it sits on a shaft..remember the bobbin itself sits sorta loose so the thread can go all the way around it. this is how it "twists" around the needles thread to make a sorta knot. but the shaft holding it in is thin, so I'm not sure you would be able to get a small drill through it but it seems to me this would work but I'm not sure either.

hi. How do you think this machine would go sewing pleats in a motorcycle seat cover? The outer material is marine vinyl, with the inner being 3/4" material-backed-foam. Naturally the foam squashes pretty well flat under the foot. .. The sewing is mainly straight runs across. I don't care if it takes a long time, it's my bike after all :) Any advice appreciated
@MainelyAcresFarmBrooks
@MainelyAcresFarmBrooks 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment!! I am going to say no, because the spacing between the presser foots highest point and the bottom plate is 1/2 inch. Now I know you can squash it down, but after you squash it and sew it. It will stay squashed and not rise back up. The sewing lines would compress the foam. I wouldn't see this being a problem if you were to just sew around the edges, but to go across the seat would defeat the 3/4 foam. I would use a ½ inch piece of foam to sew the vinyl to and then use a thicker piece for padding under the ½ inch piece. I hope that helps.

If I were you I would talk to someone in your area that does upholstery. They would be able to tell you what machine to look at. There are so many different leather sewing machines on the market. It would suck to buy a very expensive machine, just to find out it does not sew what you need it to.
@EdwinHenryBlachford
@EdwinHenryBlachford 7 жыл бұрын
thanks for that. Fortunately my younger brother has a curtain business and has knowledge, but none of his machines can do leather/vinyl. It seems that the "Singer 4423" will do the bike seat job, but I'll ask him. If the bike seat turns out nice, I might end up making a few more for my club members, who knows eh.. However I'm interested in trying out some proper leather projects as well ( as a hobby..ie try and make some heavy motorcycle boots in a sort of cuban healed/steel tipped style exactly to my weird foot size or make a leather jacket maybe ) and the Chinese hand machine might suit that perhaps. Horses for courses, have to buy both I suppose... :). The Chinese machines are probably a good way to learn the basic internals of a sewing machine in maintaining them. I like hand tools, very satisfying to use. Also, power off.. but you can kill a bull or grow some cotton and keep on sewing...

I use many different sizes for different leather projects. I am using a 21/130 needle with a T-135 size thread for some heavy duty leather sewing I am working on. Here are a few links to help you chose the right needle to thread combination: www.thethreadexchange.com/miva/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Category_Code=needles_thread_size_chart and www.sailrite.com/PDF/Thread%20and%20Needle%20Recommendations.pdf

If you had an old treadle machine base, it would be pretty easy to bolt it to the base aligned with the belt drive on the treadle. You'd have to hunt around to find the right belt.

I have one of these machines, and sometimes I actually skip one of the tensioners... I.e. I only run the thread around one tensioner and leave the other tensioner empty. Then I can tighten the nut to the proper tension. It depends a lot on what material I'm sewing, what thread I'm using, etc. Try it and see if it improves things.

I looked at this machine and decided it was a piece of crap! I bought an old Singer 29-4 cobbler and did a total rebuild even new decals. My total cost for the machine and rebuild was under $400 and I have a machine that will outlast my lifetime as it outlasted its previous owner before me. Also its way more beautiful than a piece of crap from China that will not last very long before breaking!

Yes, I have used cotton thread before. I made a couple dresses for my wife. The tread I used was a T-1 cotton thread and I believe I used a size 18 needle. This machine can use size 12-22 needles without modifying it. I buy my needles and thread off eBay here is a link to the needles. I don't have a link to the thread because I just buy whats on sale at the time. www.ebay.com/itm/Household-HAx1-15x1-Machine-Sewing-Needles-Flat-Shank-Universal-10-sizes-10-40pc/323788439955?

I just found out about these machines. It’s been a couple years since your video was posted and there are so many vendors on Amazon now, that I’m wondering if more than one company is making them as was stated in this thread. What vendor did you buy from? www.amazon.com/s?k=cobbler+sewing+machine+leather&crid=2PVBNIS27Q55F&sprefix=Cobbler+%2Carts-crafts%2C232&ref=nb_sb_ss_i_5_8

Most all of these machines are made by Hu Ji in China, but they don't sell them directly to individual customers. They sell them by the pallet load to vendors. So you basically looking at the same machines from different vendors. Now some vendors are better than others... and that's why I recommend Bantam Saddle Tack. Their customer service is amazing and they go through all the machines to make sure they are in working order.
