Chinese jet's encounter with US surveillance aircraft over South China Sea

A Chinese fighter pilot performed an 'unnecessarily aggressive manoeuvre' near an American surveillance aircraft operating over the South China Sea last week, a US military official has said.

The incident - which the Pentagon says is part of a pattern of behaviour by China - comes at a time of already heightened tensions between Washington and Beijing over issues including Taiwan and an alleged Chinese spy balloon that was shot down after traversing the United States earlier this year. The Chinese plane 'flew directly in front of and within 400 feet of the nose of the RC-135, forcing the US aircraft to fly through its wake turbulence' on Friday, the Indo-Pacific Command (IndoPaCom) said in a statement.

People forget the reason China has a claim on South China Seas is because of Japan which made a declaration that South China Seas is Chinese territory in order to invade and occupied it before WWII. neither Philippine nor Vietnam colonial government was able nor *willing* (!) to confront the Japanese claim and that is the real reason why China today have a legitimate claim over South China Seas which was surrendered and handed over to the Chinese as settlement for WWII. If territorial claim is based on distance then Guam would belong to Philippines or Micronesia and not US! Power is often passed through succession of ownership not distance!

To add to what Justin said, the US and Japan have a defence agreement and the US military have bases on the islands of Okinawa Prefecture. Furthermore, the name of 'South China Sea' is a term designated by Europeans and therefore the name used in most European languages. The Chinese simply call it the 'South Sea' (南海). Just because it has 'China' in the name, doesn't mean it belongs to China. The same applies to the Japan Sea (shared by the Koreas, Russia and Japan) or the English Channel which is equally not an English possession.

If we’re using antiquated maps to justify land claims, that means the British empire should own pretty much all of Europe and even a large portion of Africa. If we’re looking at maps, why don’t we consider only the Xia dynasty land claim?

The fact is ancient Chinese did live on the islands of South China Sea. Ancient Chinese relics like temples, coins, porcelains, china artifacts and clay makings were found. These relics are ancient Chinese because at their same time, no other countries reached the same smelting or china/porcelain/pottery making skills. Only China could do that. China owns the 9 dash area of South China Sea. UN and most countries admit this fact. For example, it was US warships that carried China soldiers cruising that sea in 1946 to declare China sovereignty over there. But later due to navigation improvement in other SCS countries, they wanted to obtain the islands so they denied their previous admittance that the islands belonged to China.
