Btw. and just an observation, where I live (a bigger city with a Chinese and also a Japanese community) members of the Chinese pretend to be Japanese, parents intentionally let their kids wear Japanese sports shirts etc. Many of the Chinese here are unfortunately perceived as somewhat rude and often impertinent (e.g. do not follow any rules or knowingly break them) and are met with a certain rejection, which is why it is apparently beneficial for them to call themselves Japanese.

I’ve seen a situation where many Chinese living abroad behave as non Chinese,(most don’t interact with locals and mostly keep to themselves. To my understanding it’s a kind of insecurity. Maybe it’s somewhat hard for most of them to blend in another culture.
As a person of Chinese descent I can absolutely confirm that some of the violent history between Japan and China colors many Chinese people's views on Japan and Japanese people. Its very real. Congrats on the birth of your child and future married life. Health and Prosperity!

There's a big difference between Tibetan, Hui and Uyghur peoples, they're not the same tribe, but the areas where they live can overlap (including Sichuan). They have different culture, language, food, etc. The subtitled "Xinjiang greetings" are actually Tibetan. Tibetans are mostly Buddhist, while that restaurant is serving halal Hui food, similar to what you'd get in Qinghai. Uyghurs on the other hand cook a great lamb kebab (also halal). That scooter driver was 100% being a dick to you, you handled it well.

I believe the bad feelings between the Chinese and Japanese people come from a long time passed. I recently watched a movie called Ipman, the time period was during WW2, 1939-1945 when the Japanese invaded China. A terrible time for the Chinese. Although the movie was very much pro Chinese but I have researched the history and it was not a good time for the Chinese.

you can’t understand Chinese culture only watching a video. Let me brief you some China has a very deep culture and a lot of sayings have deeper meanings. China being a very traditional country has centuries of years long disputes with Japan. Right from before the start of the First World War. ( Check the history of conflict between these two neighboring countries). Till today the grudges of that invasion remains strong in the peoples mind and they have very strong hate towards Japan. When a Chinese person calls you Japanese it’s a very negative word. There is so much hate, despise etc in it.
