There are two main approaches to designing main battle tanks. The western way… and the Soviet way. A typical NATO tank is a relatively big vehicle operated by a four man crew and armed with a 120mm gun with good elevation. Soviet engineers usually go for a low profile, a densely packed interior and a 125mm gun with an autoloader. All in all, tanks belonging to different schools of tank design are so different both visually and on a technical level, that, in most cases, you can easily tell whether a vehicle was made in the USSR or in the West just by looking at it.
Sometimes, though, engineers decide to walk the middle path, making good use of ideas and design choices of both schools of tank design. That’s basically what happened in the People's Republic of China, where Soviet tanks were eventually used as a base for original local designs.

I think modern chinese tank design shows some interesting new trends with the type 15 doing away with the carousel autoloader in favor of an autoloader in the turret bustle instead to increase crew survivability is the ammo goes boom.
@EcchiRevenge
@EcchiRevenge 3 жыл бұрын
That's less of a concern when Type 15 has very little armor to begin with(don't care if you have blowout panels if the shot goes through front/back of turret with wall separating crew from ammo being compromised), against mbt-level apfsds ofcourse. Placing it in the turret makes it more likely to go boom in first place since turret is almost never hidden from the enemy, and also requires more armor on side of turret to keep it from getting damaged by every single thing(placing ammo in hull at least allows tracks/roadwheels to be used as some protection). It's probably a compromise in design(terrain requires more elevation/depression than what height-minimized T-series design can provide, so turret is taller) to make use of the extra space in turret and keep ammo safer from landmines.

@ex0duzz

A man jumped in front, blocking the whole parade. They all stopped..then he jumped on top of the tank, and did some antics. Nothing happened..then he got off. Tank tried to drive around at some point..he kept blocking it. Tank kept stopping.. nothing happened. That's the end of the video. Absolutely zero violence from the tanks or people inside them. What's the point of your comment again? There's absolutely zero evidence either of tanks opening fire or running over anyone in tiananmen square. But there are lots of video evidence of soldiers killed, hung from bridges and burned Cartel style. Then these murderers stole their weapons and even armored vehicles like tanks and started opening fire on the innocent crowds..so obviously Chinese military had to take action at that point after weeks of restraint, and even after dozens of them got killed they still held back. If there were thousands killed it was because it was an armed rebellion and they had armored vehicles, auto matic weapons, even grenades at that point. Thousands killed is already low compared to what would have happened if China did not put an end to it. A civil war with tens, probably even hundreds of millions killed and affected. So Chinese unity and stability is of paramount importance to China and Chinese people.

What i love about Chinese Tanks is that they created their own of what i would call "Tank Culture" You see, ever since WW1 nations based their first tanks from mostly French Renault FT tank which they used to make their own first prototypes. From then on each country would create their very own culture of how they made their tanks based on : their individual recourses, tactics, expectations of WW2, geography, military doctrines & philosophy, demands from their higher ups and more. This made the tanks of all nations look and act similar on some cases yet at the same time where extremely different in both appearance, shape, strengths and weaknesses e.t.c. Yet since WW2 all tank designs where divided between one of the 2 cultures of East (USSR) and West (NATO). (although you could still find differences, you would very much see in essence the same tank in most nations. Just slightly better or worst is some aspects. It makes you wonder "how would the tank design of all nations would be now if their governments had not fallen and they kept their own methods of modernizing their tanks rather than copying the ones of the victors?") Yet China managed to create their own unique culture with knowledge they earned from both existing cultures. Some would say they did the same thing as other nations today, however what they did is closer to what the after-WW1 nations did by using the Renault FT as a base to create their own tanks and then managed to find their own way of making them.
