although i agree the device is not premium built, you shouldnt conclude on something you dont know! starting the motor at low voltage could've burned your motor! this dimmer scr device was not meant to be used on motor loads, only resistive loads. get a variac with 2x-4x the power capacity of your motor and start at 220v working your way down to the speed you desire but take caution on going below 110v as the current is going up and might burn your variac. im an electrical engr btw.

Yes you are right someone else point this out in the comments quite a interesting paragraph, as said in the video im no electronics chap, that said it was sold to me with a title 'motor speed control', it said nothing about which type just the power output of which it was more than enough. Whatever the outcome it really is a very poor item, all the best 👍

If I got 190V in circuit? Does this thing could do 230V for my coffemachine?

Can I use this as a step down from 220v to 110v?

Good video.. ignore the purists comments; 90% of viewers want to know what you told them and has saved them buying it. I had one and sent it back to ebay.

Hi and thanks, i learnt to ignore them after the first video i ever put out. It makes me laugh you always find they have no content themselves one chap below although critical explained why and we can all learn from this and he gave positives. My point is of the video which quite clearly you have understood. 'Motor Speed Controller' was the ebay ad. Nothing about what type of motor or any instructions and that aside how dangerous was it? Not in my garage. Cheers anyway.

You need to have a load on an scr voltage dimmer switch

Besides the risk to consumers, what I find shocking is how little it would take for the manufacturer to do it right. We're literally talking pennies!

What is the power supported by the speed regulator and what is the power of the motor?
@TinkerBod5 жыл бұрын
Apparently controller was 4000w on a 3 pin plug strange but true? and the motor is 0.75hp, might do a follow up video soon of a lot of things of which this will be one. Now all sorted with a proper speed controller.

the rated power of the device is 2kW. 4kW is a figure based on claimed peak current of 18A, vs claimed rated current of 9A

Defiantly not.

This is a triac (not mosfet) dimmer circuit, like a lighting dimmer switch. Not going to work for speed control of an induction motor like the one you have, as its not changing the AC frequency like a VFD does, just cutting the peak voltage down. It would work in principle with a universal brushed type motor like many corded power tools use. I agree that this is a piece of sh*t and totally illegal to sell in the UK for the reasons you have highlighted. Thanks for making the video - saved me from getting one.
@TinkerBod5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the constructive reply. I dont know enough about these things and this is helpful. I see things from a mechanical perspective. I now have it running on a VFD and its perfect. First ran it on the one in the press video then purchased another. Anyway Cheers all the best..

How true, I just thought maybe, just maybe, I could get away with it. Can you imagine in a workshop how long this would last, shocking crap.
@dare2scheme9043 жыл бұрын
They're all made in China, none are made in the UK. I owned a Jaguar before... You know damn well where this is going, the electronics, electrical and general engineering were all rubbish. You need to read the manufacturer specifications. You said there was no "earth wire" and most of the world does waste copper on "earth" circuits, they instead use "common".

You are using wrong thing at wrong place. This device is for resistive load not for inductive load

Interesting video. In these days of stringently regulated electrical equipment it's easy to forget that electrical death traps are widely available on the internet, many appearing on the surface to ship from UK addresses.

Got to admit, I thought it was going to be poor but not this bad. I cant even be bothered to salvage the bits for future projects. I can see me going to 3 phase with an Inverter like the one on my hydraulic press but less hp. They shouldnt be allowed to less this stuff.

Look for a cheap VFD instead. There are good ones for c.£80

If you buy Chinese you buy crap end of story! I decided a while ago to check for "Made in China" or "COC" which means Country of Origin China"on everything I look to buy. And, it is very hard to find stuff that is not. Pay more and get more quality.
@TinkerBod5 жыл бұрын
Good luck with that, Chinese stuff is good when its good, but yes there is some real dangerous crap out there.
@simont36863 жыл бұрын
Of course this is a total piece of shit, but to be fair, electrically it behaved exactly like described by the seller. Needs a load of >20W to show voltage accurately and won'slt show anything until voltate is enough for the voltmeter. But thanks for the info about its quality. Now I definitly won't buy one.

If is so much crap ...... why you buy it ????

Dear seller, if i knew it was crap in the first place i would not have purchased it. It was purchased to use not make video. Now can i have a refund??????????
