Not to the level of insanity depicted in this video, but high nonetheless. Until very recently, it was automatically expected that a man would provide a house/apartment and car, and pay a "bride price" to the parents of the bride. Easily hundreds of thousands of dollars (U.S) and into the millions. It all depends on the bride's hometown and other attributes, as well as where the couple plans to live. For example, brides from tier 1 cities usually have a higher "value" than those from the countryside. Apartments in a tier 1 city can cost 5-10+ times as much as something in a Tier 3 city and below. Parents of boys start saving for this sht from the time they're born, and that's in addition to paying for their education. Parents of girls aren't off the hook. They're still paying for college and contributing to things such as furniture for the new home, but the majority of the initial burden falls on the grooms.

The culture is different, women can not have kids without being married , the system use to punish both women and men but now it just punishes the man. Also the child will not be recognized by the system. The dowry is apart of their culture, it never use to be that high but that is what women want now because the divorce rate is high in china and the money they get from the dowry is if they get a divorce, and also they want half the property so they will try to get there name on the house.
