I always tip around 20% regardless if service is good or bad… it’s pretty much mandatory at this point in America.. wish tipping culture in America would go away… we are the only place in the world with it… restaurants should just charge more and get rid of tipping culture all together.

To give a tip is not usually in many European countries. Mostly the staff has higher income as in America. Just 10% is in my opinion to less... If I eat outside and the service is well, I give around 15-20% top and on top, if the food is excellent, I request the chef to inform in person and give 10€. Not only during last 2 years since covid19 pandemic is worldwide, most of the restaurants struggle. Bless that it's going now up and the situation is better as 2019!!!

I think a lot of the time it has to do with cultural humility, like in chinese houses we rarely ever explicitly say "I love you" and if I have a good day i'll generally say the translation of it went ok rather than actually saying it went really well, and it's kinda been established in the culture to be humble and not accept all the gifts you get when you first get them and some foreigners may misinterpret that as them not wanting the tips because they don't understand the cultural norms

People need to realize that working for most Asian restaurants which have below minimum wage, no vacation date, no health benefit, and no holiday pay. So, you need to be more generous on Asian waiters cuz, they actually really depend on your tips. The worst part is, sometime the owner also keep the tips.

This video just shows you the kindness, modesty and humility of servers at Chinese restaurants. If you left $50-100+ tip at a Western restaurant, they'll be grateful sure, but they won't chase you outside the restaurant to see that it's a mistake or ask you why you left so much. It's also sad to see this because it also means that Chinese restaurant servers almost never get tipped well, and certainly never in an amount that would seem generous, which is why they all assumed these tips were a mistake. Kudos to the last guy, he legit asked Sheldon, whom he thought was just a random student and not knowing they're together, to go find Mike and Edward, as if that'll be somehow possible.

This also kinda brings another sad point, at least in my experience of working in a Vietnamese or Chinese restaurant in Sydney. They usually pay their own people $10/hr, which is half the legal minimum wage in Australia. On top of that, the employees are usually forced to do multiple things at once, such as washing dishes, kitchen prep, kitchen hand, spend extra hours for busy nights or help renovate the shop at the end of a shift. And if the employers are in need of staff, they will hire a non-Asian person, and immediately pay them more than the experienced workers, and have them only do customer service. Its really depressing that international students here in Sydney are taken advantage of like that, despite success of the business.

Finally someone's talking about this mess tip payment. Chinese people do not have the tip-culture so they won't ask you for tipping yet still provides their best services. While you are visiting China, you can just pay for what you eat, which is totally fine 'cause they get paid from their boss. In america, however, tips is the major part of their salaries. So, plz, remember to tip, fairly, even though they don't comprehend this culture.

The fact that the uncle said that his customers don’t make money so easily really reflects back to how Asians are such sympathetic people… you can tell he doesn’t treat his customers as strangers but neighbours under his care… I’m currently a waiter at a Thai restaurant… my boss said his workers are his family and he calls me son, it’s the little things which make Asian restaurants so warm… I’ve eaten at some western restaurants although the service is good aswell it’s not the same feeling… the relationship I get from them is more business like rather than friends sharing one building

I am white, and I honestly can’t believe people would even consider tipping less at a Chinese restaurant. Chinese restaurant employees are some of the hardest working people I’ve ever met. At Chinese/Asian restaurants, I tip the same as anywhere else, if not more, because they’re always so kind and polite. PS, I love your videos and your message guys, sharing culture is so important.

Appreciate you tipping according to the service you received! I used to work at a Chinese restaurant in Alabama, and my white coworkers would tell us how many of the regulars in our restaurant tip more at other restaurants that they work/worked at (same price range). I also saw how customers tipped differently, depending on the race of the server, instead of service (white servers tipped the most, Asians the least). Mind blowing.

In Sydney our Chinatown has been very hard hit as a result of Australia’s border closures and lockdowns during covid. Even restaurants that have been there for 30 years have closed due to the financial hardship. Good on you guys! These old Asian aunties and uncles need tips too. 😭

@@MegaHuichen We do. But usually only where there is good service, and not the 20% in US. It’s because in Australia there is a minimum wage required. The hospitality minimum wage is now about $19.49 per hour.

这个影片到最后我真的看哭了。 因为工作关系接触到好几个华人小餐厅老板，而且也比较清楚他们的经营状况。那些中年唐餐老板们大多英文都不太行，每次我有去到帮他们填表，或者是政府寄了什么信帮他们解释一下，他们都是连声道谢的那种。有一家餐厅因为离公司很近所以有什么事我都直接过去问老板，老板每次都送可乐，然后有时候说给个打包盒你去厨房想吃什么自己装，都是刚做好的。虽然我也只是在正常工作时间做我自己份内的事情，但是可能对他们来说，有个讲中文的人愿意帮助他们就是让他们觉得非常满足的事情。虽然我来加拿大也不久，英文也还很烂，但是在加拿大这个小地方作为少之又少的华人之一，我的工作能帮助到华人们在这里生存，也是我觉得能为我的community做点事情的机会吧。

Thanks for bringing awareness to this. I used to do the 10% standard tip at Chinese restaurants, simply because that's what I was taught to do by my parents and relatives. I used to think you have to tip more in a Western restaurant because their "service" was supposedly better but now reflecting on it, Chinese Restaurants actually have pretty stellar customer service. Sure, you don't get the small talk and the "how are you enjoying your food" check up like you would at a Western restaurant but man when you ask for a refill on your beverage/tea or ask them to follow up with the kitchen on your order, they actually go do it immediately. In a Chinese Restaurant, the whole staff is attentive to your requests when you flag them down with your hand (even the manager or owner). Whereas in a Western Restaurant, you have to wait for your specific server. If anything, my experience with Western restaurants have been hit & misses. There are actually many instances where I would encounter entitled servers at a Western restaurant who provide little/no service and feel like they deserve a 18-20% tip.

Some don’t even tip, most of the time I wanted to go after them and says, “Was my service that bad that you don’t even tip? Do you think I work for free?” But y’know.. there’s nothing to be done.

If the food is bad, and you continue to work there, well lets just say neither you nor the kitchen staff or the owner will stay in business long. I know restaurant biz has lots of competition, and profit margins are low. but people have many choices. People sometimes will keep going to a place, simply for sentimental value, even if the food and service sucks, but those are rare customers.

I think you should just tip what you can afford. Not everyone is rich and everyone deserve a nice meal. I can never afford the 20% since everything so expensive in CA. I just tip $2-$5 depending on how much stuff I buy. Like 2 tray =$2, 2 tray plus drink = $3 regardless of the price total. It not like I am ordering 10 tray of food and tipping $2. I usually just get 1-2 item and my order is simple. Unless you have some crazy order, just tip what you can.

Being a native Korean, having experience living in the US, seeing things that will bring unity as well as easy accessible and except able is so wonderful and makes helps build a better understanding of Chinese living in the North American region. I would like to make 2 requests if possible. 1. Please find ways to reach out to the Chinese that are in Asia especially to the ones who don’t speak English too. 2.One of the biggest obstacles in Eastern Asia is that there is not so many things that do the role of a bridge to unite neighboring cultures like China, Japan and Korea. But, more and more people are trying different things to build friendships among people in close regions. Just want to say again that you guys are great! Your family and friends have wonderful vibes! What a beautiful video! I didn't know that there's a difference in tipping culture depending on what restaurant you're eating in (because in Germany we don't have a tipping culture in this amount at all - mostly you just round up your bill to a nice amount, but that's the same for every place not only european or western restaurants) I got really really emotional because all of the waiters and waitresses immediately wanted to give back the money - really, thank you for doing this!

Yeah, it looks like this video is in Canada but I'm from the US and servers can be paid as low as $2.13 per hour. They’re expected to make up the wage through tips. Personally I think this is a terrible system because it often leaves them severely underpaid. That’s what makes it especially bad that servers at Asian restaurants get tipped less. How can they make up a higher wage then? But this is why tipping is such a big deal here... they basically rely on it to get by. EDIT: I googled it quickly and learned that Canadian servers recently got updated to have equal minimum wage now, which is great! But it's still unfair that Asian restaurants would be tipped less ofc, so they're doing good out there. Also made me realize that holy shit, America is even worse than I thought...

For me....someone that has worked in restaurants for longer than I care to say......I did not realize that tipping is normally a lot less at a Chinese restaurant because as a longtime restaurant worker for years, I typically tip at least 20% or more but it is so wonderful that you guys identified this and addressed it. The idea of good service is just different in Chinese restaurants. Servers are not assigned to a table, so customers tip based on the average service. And outlier tip would almost always be a mistake. This also means that the service is much more consistent, as a customer can call on any wait staff for help. (note this is for traditional Chinese restaurants.)

In Asia, we don't normally tip because the staff actually get paid. We expect our bill to be the actual amount of money we pay. I don't understand why a culture of underpaying staff and extorting customers of hidden fees should be considered ideal.

I hate tipping culture so much. It’s basically like hey you just paid for this meal, but not for the service so you decide whether or not the guy who serves you eats tonight. I’m very glad tipping culture doesn’t exist in Australia and servers are able to get fair pay.

Just because you haven't heard it doesn't mean it doesn't exist. You've now seen a video, and you've gotten several accounts from actual servers. Note that this is in Canada, though. You may be from somewhere else. In America, I think the big tip difference in the Chinese food conversation is buffet versus normal dining.

me neither, but tipping at a buffet is a little different because you're getting yourself the food. sort of half way between fast food and full service dining. any more I get buffet to go, it works out cheaper that way and I give myself the tips for "delivery" 🤣

Thank you for sharing content around tipping at Asian restaurants. Tipping shouldn't be based on the food you're having, but based on the service. No matter what type of restaurant you're in, tipping should be the same across the board. I love this video!

In Australia, tipping is such a foreign concept, let alone in Asian restaurants. I don't know if in America, restaurants don't have a pay per hour system and the workers rely on tips, but in Australia, no one actually tips. Some places have donation boxes but those are for charities, and if you do leave a tip, a large majority of workers will try to give it back or humbly take it.
