"Influencer" has negative connotations (for most people) in English, whereas the Chinese word that Xioama thought matched could be totally different.
@sergeantbigmac2 жыл бұрын
It has negative connotations in English mostly because of the immature actions and stunts by many influencers to go viral and grow their following... But to be fair when you step back and look at it, it does take a lot of hard work and creativity to carve out your own corner of the internet in an ever-competitive market and make a career out of it to boot. You are building a business from scratch afterall.
@BaldMancTwat2 жыл бұрын
@@sergeantbigmac To me, the word influencer makes me think of an egotistical "Instagram model" that sells shitty sponsored products and promotes pyramid schemes. Both are examples of yet another prejudice we need to overcome. There are over 7,000 languages spoken in the world. Few people, even if they are determined, have the time and the money and the opportunity to learn to speak more than two to four languages. Allow me to explain, in the western world, is very normal a non ethnic person been talking the language of that place, there is plenty of non ethnic germans in Germany, speaking german, they were born there, they have german nationality and its normal seeing that today. Can be said the same in France, Portugal etc (not talking about the USA because there is no "ethnic americans" unless you talk about the native americans). It can be said, its even "racist" if you judge someone thinking they dont speak your language or assume they are not from that place. The other hand, Japanese, Korean or Chinese societies, have deep problems on that field. You can be born in there, but never seen truly as one of them. They make asumptions right away. Switching is actually hard when i don't have coffee. I slipped up quite a few times throughout dinner, even though when my mind is on the rail of one particular language, I dont have any trouble finding words. Takes a few hours to really sink into a languages flow though. Also going between Russian-Spanish-English-German is hard too. Learning mandarin as my #7 Rn. I know about 1200 words so far, but its going to be a long few months to get to 2200-2500 which is where I start feeling good about speaking. I feel that my motivation for languages is far more petty than xiaoma though. I don't really like connecting with people and surprising them or anything.. Kinda sappy but true - I really admire how the people with whom you interact genuinely feel GOOD to talk with you! I was born here in the US, so my only frame of reference is through my grandparents. In Canada, often immigrants do not assimilate - they form in ghettos and they keep their communities insular. Even after generations, their youth still speak with a thick accent, and cling to the ways of "the old country" which, in many cases, means holding views that are misogynistic, antisocial, etc. Arguably, their descendants are worse off for it - after all, you leave your country and come to another to start a NEW life, not to continue an old one. The American model, while in your eyes is "sad" is certainly better for immigrants than the Canadian model. That said, I don't know what the American model does differently, but it seems to work. Harsh, but true.
@tpilot_error4042 жыл бұрын
@@Ejexion There are two types of immigrants , those that migrated by choice ( non fake romances often or business expats) and those wich where urged by " situations". If it wasn't a free choice they will never adapt and keep klinging to their old "home" I was a free choice immigrant in 2 countries and know it's not easy to understand some nuances of society yet they might play a big role in your life there . Communication and interaction is key. How is one supposed to know if no one told you? How is garbage handled? How do you enroll school, what does it costs and what will the results mean ? And there is the third generation identity problem. If you aren't born within a nations borders , you will never get the same chances however much your efforts. And some companies exploit the hard working immigrants that just want to show their value and good potential to the new country. Others are tokens played like a puppet. Within their getto , among theirs ,they have identity, value, meaning ,simular moral , compassion and understanding.
@tpilot_error4042 жыл бұрын
@Alex indeed but the rules and cultures should be clear. Americans don't understand european traffic rules on crossings without traffic lights. There are priority rules and there are signs but you would have to do specific research to know and you need to find the correct information. I once had a problem with making the public buss service stop in a country where they had red buttons on the buss .Grow up in a country where red was emergency button , pushing it unnecessary would give you big fines and trouble. We had blue ones for normal stops and if there where not blue ones it would stop at all stops anyway. I worked on a airport and we had a problem with people constantly pushing emergency buttons on escalators ( making them blocked all day long). Turned out in their country escalators had a button to reverse the direction of the escalator and they where mistaken. Walk someones shoes. Yet learning language is a social ( survival) skill that hasn't got to do with intelligence. It's the first step.
@Kelnx2 жыл бұрын
@@Ejexion We have similar insular "ghettos" in many US cities, so that part is the same. But I suppose the one difference between the US and Canada is that the US gets a lot of immigrants who come here wanting to be American and choose to assimilate themselves and in some cases are more "American" and patriotic than a lot of multigenerational Americans are. It's also much harder to legally become an American citizen. It seems that Canada has a lot of easy inroads through old Commonwealth connections which tends to let people in who couldn't care at all about Canada or Canadians or your culture. Cultural appreciation does work both ways after all.

They did it to show off to fellow rich neighbors that they spend money to hire workers to have a ‘nicer’ looking grass around their house. Commoners copied them as usual, like marriage. Also, it saved many lives when there was a famine in ww2, which i heard from older people. Btw its the most nutrient dense veggie, except for seaweed (but thats under the ocean).

It's because they're trying to process English into their own language, and so when you speak their language, it sounds like gibberish immediately because it's not English. It's like getting talked to right as you wake up, they're speaking your language but you have no idea what's coming out of their mouth because you were unprepared
@BaldMancTwat2 жыл бұрын
@@fredrickatchison4542 Yeah, I think most people experience this sensation though. For me, I get it a lot at work. Since everybody at my work speaks English, but I am the only person who speaks only English, and there are usually at least 4 languages (including English) being spoken at once in a small space. So when somebody talks to me in English, I almost always need them to repeat it, as for the first 5 seconds or so, I didn't even know they were speaking English, so my brain wasn't even trying to understand it.

Thanks for all of your videos, I've been watching a lot of them lately and you really did inspire me to actually speak to someone in their language today. I've studied some Dutch, though my grammar is not good, and have been learning Hindi because I like to cook Indian food and most recipes are in Hindi, but I have difficulty practicing with others. I'm currently studying Biblical Hebrew and New Testament Greek, but want to also learn more spoken languages like Spanish, Finnish, and Romanian. Today, though, I had to ask someone for help with something who didn't know much English, so I pulled out Google Translate and practiced speaking it since I already know a few words. The lady was so kind and it was such a relief to not feel judged. I think she was glad that I was making the effort, and I really thank you for that motivation to get out there and just speak. I hope to continue learning more. Looking forward to more of your videos, stay safe out there!

I recommend just studying modern Israeli Hebrew rather than Biblical Hebrew, you will easily be able to read and understand much of the Torah in the original if you knowi the modern language (obviously there are differences) ; but if you onlyt learn Biblical Hebrew, you will have a hard time communicating in modern Hebrew.

Always brings a smile on my face whenever I see a new Xiaoma episode. I've pretended to speak on the phone in Chinese just to see if anyone around me can understand me. Also, for your streetsmartlanguages thing would it be possible to get Vietnamese on there at some point? I'm trying to learn Vietnamese so I can go visit there and potentially move there, but it's hard when no one around you can speak it and there's not very many online resources out there.

@@p4cks Well, two can play it literal, if you will: I didn't say "its like" either, I said "it's like". And both expressions convey an idea of appearance. I was not saying what things were, but rather what they looked like, or what they were like to me at first sight. And since I was not stating facts, I don't see the point in making a whole business out of it. Particularly, since I literally said "I know it just seems so" ("seem" being a synonumous of "look like".) So again I don't see why one would feel the need to correct a person who already tempered their own words.

i'm loving that you are doing courses. Would love to see how you learn and see if it's better than Rosetta. Hoping that you will eventually get some of the Scandinavian countries and eastern block countries on your course list. I know the Russian grammar is some of the toughest to learn. I was told to not focus on the grammar but to focus on just getting the content down and eventually the grammar will follow. I want to visit the eastern block countries next year like Estonia, Belarius, (will have to wait on Ukraine), and many others. Would also like to visit Norway and Sweden. I've learned a few phrases but I would really like to be able to hold a semi decent conversation or at least hear them talking about me behind my back lol.
