I worked in the Chinese TV industry. I was working on a post-edit with a famous former child star-turned-director and the man was on his knees. He was so so tired. I have never seen anybody look that tired. We finished at 2am. My part was done but I knew this man and his editor had to come back to work again at 6am.

I love Chinese dramas but it never occurred to me that the Chinese film industry would abuse and exploit its workers. It is really sad. I hope in the future the film community can galvanise themselves into an organsiation whereby they can rid themselves of exploitative and dangerous and incompetent practitioners in the film industry. You never know if the film community self regulates it could benefit everyone including better dramas and the ones who don't want to self regulate would end up being forced out of the film industry. Anyway what do I know my views are from a western perspective. I can only hope that one day Chinese film industry does something. As much as I love watching Chinese dramas to think of those behind the camera suffering it takes some of the joy out it.

Thank you speaking up and speaking for those who cannot speak. Truly sad that 21st century and China is still treating their workers so horribly. I hope with Godfrey's death that more people in the movie/drama industry will stand up and fight for their health and wellbeing. I love cdrama but not at the expense of the crew's life or health. We all can change and promote better working conditions and environment.

Wow, this really needs to change. And the sad thing is it's the norm, people are expected to be like that. Reminds me of how in Korea if idols faint and go back to work immediately they're applauded for being "professional " like no, it should not be like that. And nowadays even for the celebrities, if they talk bad about the working conditions, or if they got injured, keyword warriors will say they're being 矫情 and that for what they're getting paid, they should just suck it up. But that type of attitude doesn't help, nobody wins here.

I just started to watch C Dramas (specially, period dramas) and this would explain a lot, like why some scene look like they took just one shot and put it in the final product and it didn't matter it was far from perfect, why some actors look dehydrated, pale and about to faint (in scene they are not supposed to), the bad writing, the weird editing, the tendency to drag the plot the first 40 episodes, then everything happens in 10 episodes in the most ridiculous way possible and then try to rush a final in the last 5. Seriously, the lack of detail and planning is glaring.

Thank you for exposing this overworked and under-regulated industry. Yes those who work behind the scenes start earlier and finish later than the actors. I’ve learned about this in an video interview of Wallace Huo. Responsible actors try to remember their lines and not to NG too much as it would have consequences for the entire filming crew be it the make-up people or the lighting people and so on. Again even in the tv drama industry, you can see the east vs west (North America/Europe) difference. East favours collectivism and west is more on the side of individual rights. Unfortunately this “east” mentality is doing nothing beneficial for those working in the industry. Wishing for major improvements in the Chinese industry bringing it somewhat closer to those in the west.

I'm glad you decided to put your mental and physical health first. No paycheck or "career success" is worth suffering for the rest of your life. I hope you're feeling better now. Knowing how the culture is in normal working environments in East Asia, the "work until you drop" mentality, one can only imagine how much worse it is in the entertainment business. I believe that only if the consumers aka the fans organize themselves and demand better conditions, will things change. After all, big companies only care about profit, and as you explained, the actual workers do not have the means to make a difference. So, unless the people in charge fear for their advertising and broadcasting deals, nothing will be done.

about what you said regarding DC2 filming in NYC, I've seen korean artists say the same thing about filming in LA. They're completely shocked everyone just starts cleaning up and leaving after 5pm, also the hour-long standard lunch breaks everyday lol. I didn't work in film, but I did live in korea for some time and I know that it's not even within the entertainment field, but most businesses run like that. No overtime pay but everyone's expected to work overtime for weeks when it's busy season. I guess when it comes to film a lot of it has to do with budget, but I think it also has to do with this group vs individual mindset. A lot of us foreigners were shocked at how overworked people were and how it's simply the norm over there because we're expected to think 'for the good of the company'. I can't say I regret leaving.

Honestly its easy to notice when you see how many Actors are extremely dehydrated. Their lips are practically about to burst and bleed. Its sad plus it defeats the purpose when you can't even enjoy a romantic scene. Due to knowing that their kiss is slicing one another's lips to bits.

It probably helps to advertise the makeup companies which sponsor the production. Got to prove how effective the makeup works by showing how well it hides the actors dry skin, black eyes and extra oil production caused by their fatigue. Maybe there's some health supplements thrown in there to advertise how a magical pill can replace 6 hours of sleep. I hope the actors didn't catch STI from kissing dry, cracked bleeding lips.

And the point of this unhealthy work style is money 😕. Maybe efficiently spend the money for drama production, etc, so everythin else became less important. Before I watched this video, I had no idea bout how China film/drama industry works..I even thought they have better preparation, coz in China drama, they shoot it long before the broadcast schedule. Compared to korean drama for example, that have shooting schedule few months before or same period with the broadcast schedule. When I watch China drama, I sometimes found lack of details, maybe this kind of unhealthy work habit contribute to it. If they had time to rest and recharge, it would improve the quality of the drama 😞

I gotta be honest: All this has made me do is worry about my favorite Chinese actors. I want to support them and keep watching their work as much as possible, but so much makes so much sense now. Why Bai Yu said in an interview that he rather works on modern dramas instead of time-period dramas. Why his lips are chapped a lot and why so many actors look so exhausted all the time. I hoped it was "normal" and okay for them to do interviews right after shooting for hours, but the more I read about these actors' daily routine when shooting dramas, the more worried I get. Apparently the hotel or places where they take rest aren't always good enough either and the food isn't always great. It makes sense now why Yi Long took Yu out for food every morning (Zhen Hun/Guardian) and why he sort of worried about everyone having a good breakfast. On behind the scene clips from other series I saw them filming while the actors were clearly tired and needed sleep and nodded off while being asked questions. In a lot of Chinese based fan-fic stories about Chinese actors it's mentioned that these actors shoot non-stop to the point that they only have 3 hours of sleep left. I always thought that was exaggerated, but now... I want to support my idols, and especially my main idol, in all of his work, but my main idol is this tall, skinny dude who definitely can't do the sort of running through an obstacle course that Godfrey had to do and thinking about him doing that only freaks me out more. I'm feeling very conflicted about supporting working in such an environment, under those unhealthy conditions.

Wow! I'm newer to the Chinese media/movie industry...I've only been viewing Chinese Costume Dramas for a few months. I've been absolutely hooked on the quality of the productions (acting, wardrobe, scenery, storyline, etc.) yet had no idea what takes place behind the scene. Although the federal (and state level) Department of Labor, U.S. employment law, and the protection of workers have not been perfect, they apply across industries and have continuously evolved over the decades...even to this day. The need for change and improvement must start somewhere. I hope the Chinese industry experiences the necessary transformation for its workers...and everyone involved.

It’s so interesting (and horribly sad) to hear your side from the other side of the camera. Personally, this isn’t something I find that surprising as I have absorbed enough Chinese media to appreciate the massive cultural differences from my own (British), especially workplace culture. Didn’t realise how little representation there was for people in this industry, though, which is terrible. I’d be interested to know what sort of worker’s rights and representation exist in China generally, and how it compares with this industry. How much does censorship limit protest and strike movements? I bet I won’t be able to find this in Western media...with much accuracy. There should be fan movements around this. It’s bothered me for ages that those poor crew members died on The Untamed set. We should all be as grateful to the staff and crew as the stars. Maybe because Gao was a celebrity, who also worked internationally, this might spark a discussion? Unlikely though, people’s memories are so short, like you said. Anyway, this was really interesting. It’s clear how much you care about all of this. I admire that 😊 Also, it is perfectly possible to be ethical about drama fandom. It’s what your doing. Promoting without sugarcoating (ohh rhymes lol). You can appreciate art and creative projects while acknowledging deeper issues as a start to change. Everything has hypocrisy if you dig deep enough. Fans can persuade change, with their purse if not their words. 😊 Just wanted to say that random stuff cause you looked sad at the end. Have a good day 😁

Honestly, the American Hollywood industry was exactly like this before the 90s. Steven Spielberg produced The Twilight Zone film, where John Landis wrecklessly directed a shoot that killed two chinese girls and it's lead star, Vic Murrow. The two little girls were children and the studio was illegally having them work on set in late hours and in very dangerous conditions. The shoot was clearly negligent and beyond safety regulations, but John Landis, the studio, the producers, or the film crew didn't care. Everyone including Landis was found accquited of the crime. Today, this story is not talked about and is covered up by the industry. Today, work conditions in Hollywood is also extremely strenious and bad skeletons are immediately kept in the closet. Every entertainment industry in the world unfortunately breeds inhumane treatment of people.

So, when I try to compare it with my native industry i.e., Bollywood , I feel relieved for Indian actors and more devastated for Chinese actors cz the shooting for Bollywood movies usually last from 6 months to 1 year and that's actually a very decent period of time as compared to the shooting period in Chinese media. I mean for masterpiece like 'barfi', it took 8 + months to shoot and for movie like 'padmavat', it took 8 months to design the armour of Khilji only! Actually sometimes I get disappointed in a few actors also when I first see their good works but then I come across some crap which had them in it. But I guess that's what it is, they are probably not shown scripts as zhao liying posted about what they were supposed to get for legend of fei v/s what they really got. The actors probably don't hold any power and they most of the times don't say no to any roles they are offered, so as not to get on bad sides of directors and producers cz they are exploited at such a level that they don't hold any power and can't afford to say no. NOTE: Please forgive me if my English went wrong anywhere as I'm not a pro in it. And I really like your videos, the way you talk about storyline of dramas and scenes and specially the traditional constumes that you wear in you rant videos. They are really awesome.

The culture of overworking is such a norm in east asia like Japan and China it’s a norm and is expected of you to be tired, work ot, hardly get enough sleep or eat proper meal at regular times. The culture of overworking and dying because of it is so common, there’s even a term in japanese called “karoshi”.

Hi, can you Thank all the Chinese Drama shows wonderful Crew and the wonderful Actor's for the long hours less sleep, I had no idea to bring Joy, laugh, sadness, great Acting, and the hard work the people behind the scenes. I love the show The Untamed, many other Chinese TV shows and movies, it all started with me watching these shows on Netflix Australia. Now that I have an understanding of what is going on, they all have my respect and Honor. So Thank you, bringing this to my notice. I wonder this is the same in Australia.

The tragic reality of entertainment culture and industry in Asia. It’s the same in the West as well, but not as inhuman and terrible as it’s in country like China and Korea. Celebrities fighting and doing ridiculous jobs, constantly taking low quality works to be in presence for the audience or else the audience will forget about them. These celebrities received unfair treatments and lacking opportunity because they’re not a big name or trending celebrity. Etc, It’s a vicious cycle.

This is something I never understood about the Asian market and them parading their actors/idols in front of every stupid and embarrassing shows. To me, if your work is good I will always remember and support you. Even if I only see you in one film every 5 years. Being in front of me, constantly, would not make my appreciation of your work or the level of my supporting you any stronger. The current mentality needs to change, quickly.

I watched today the this video (and part 1) the first time. I thought about this and now there are two things on my mind. One: Are they any changes in this kind of working culture? Or better working abuse? working torture? Because if this causes deaths, latest at that is a point, where the responsible people should reconsider this proceeding in filming. Also people needs some rest. I'm honest, that you endured this kind of working for two year is already spectacular. I never would even last three or four months. So two years is "pretty good". My work is accounting and there are times, that I work a lot from the German point. Currently I work sometimes 12 to 14 hours a day, beginning at 5 or 6 clock in the morning. I'm exhausted. So that kind of working you endured is torture. I can only imaging, how a person after a week would feel. But this chinese work culture isn't good for people. I think all of them matters, because you need each of them in front and behind the camera to create great dramas. But with this toxic working envoirment, with all the problems like almost no sleep, maybe no payment, a lot of stress, so much physical work and so on..... There should be changes. But are there any. Did maybe Corona give some changes? Two: I think all of the crew suffer during filming. But the kind of suffering is different. To take your example the persons who are ironing the costumes. Day in, day out. That is not good. Not even for the skin. Or the costume makers in generell. The extras on the screen. The director team has a lot of preasure and responsibility. But also the leads can have their own suffering. Some actors have or had so much appointments, what they not really sleeps for days. So I think all of them are suffering. But as it is so normal, I don't think people will complain loud about this.

ok I already was shocked about part 1, after part 2 I think it is even worse than I imagined ;-( To be honest I loved the untamed and the actors, honestly because of it I started liking chinese and got interested in everything. But it really sounds horrible how all the crew members are treated :-( but it makes sense, I was thinking the whole time how can there be sooooo many series and dramas and stuff?! Now I get it , if they are working non stop and all in such short periods of time of course there can be so many. I mean you don't even have time to breath. I don't get it why has it to be this way? china always acts so strong and almighty in front of other countries, like usa or even germany, but treats his people like shit ;-( it makes me really really sad ;-( yeah it is important to work hard, but life is not all about working hard it is about living a happy life ;-( and not dying too early because of exhaustion....... But with this in mind my question is why do so many people still want to be in this kind of industry? like becoming an idol for example ? is it that they didn't know before hand?! or is it still better to be more on top of this hardworking work system? But to be fair, as a cosplayer, I always looked at this well made costumes and wigs and even the thin eyeliner on wang yibos eyes was perfectly made. So it is not that I am only watching their pretty faces, I really admire all the people who made the costumes the make up and the wigs, everything looked so well made and with care. Especially the wigs. they looked so so good as it was their own hair. It really fascinated me. and after hearing how they have to work I am about to be more fascinated how they are able to do so under such circumstances.

You think unemployment is a good solution for overwork? You are just like the hypocritical US government who put sanctions on countries in the name of punishing the governments who deprive the human right of their citizens, which actually cause the people living there having much more miserable lives.

GT A After some thought, I understand more about your kind of perple. You care more about punishing the criminal instead of saving the victim. What you really care is not improving the overall welfare of people who are already treated badly, but removing the risk of the same thing happening on yourself. Your sense of justice is simply an extension of self protection, and you would like to sacrifice the the current victims to eradicate your "enemy".

If you are enlightened to a different way to help change the industry to make it better for the actors and crew then by all means do it with my blessing.
