It is kinda misleading to say that the building of Shandong has less learning curve than building the Vikrant, considering that most of the most important and difficult subsystems in Shandong are completely domestic. Building the hull is easy, building domestic industries to the point where you can produce your own subsystems like radar, complex software, propulsion, self defense systems and even the aircraft are far far more difficult. The fact that China can produce these subsystems domestically points to a very mature, high tech industries that are less likely to be disrupted by foreign powers, and is a force multiplier on other parts of their military. Furthermore, as mentioned in the video, the Liaoning and Shandong were never really meant to be the final evolution for serial production; they have always been intended for training and then as a stopgap before Type 003 and probably the nuclear powered Type 004 come online. By the time India even consider building a nuclear carrier, China probably have launched and operate all theirs for years and probably planning for their replacement. Even the advantage of gas turbine on the Vikrant is short lived considering that the Type 003 will have a far more advanced integrated electric propulsion like the Zumwalt and QE, and has EMALS and is going to be launched soon. The future IEP powered Vishal will most likely still rely on US pleasure of supplying them with EMALS. It only takes one country to refuse to export a subsystem to completely cripple the Vikrant, the future Vishal and most of its military, which means India will always be beholden to foreign influence and meddling. If India misbehaves in the eyes of the West, we can effectively nerf them by having the West put sanctions and embargo on them. The kind of self-reliance China finally achieved is immeasurably valuable and made their country far more secure and their economic far more resilience to economic warfare, something we in the west don't like to acknowledge. In terms of development speed of a true blue water, power projection navy that can build and operate nuclear carrier battle group, India is far far behind China, probably at least 20 to 30 years. China is pulling ahead with the Type 004 with the steel already being cut, and probably will be launched by late 2030s, with complement of actual 5th gen fighters. That kind of development speed and synergy of maturing high tech industries at all levels is something India can only dream of. It is also the reason why US have always traditionally develop our own systems despite the fact that there are perfectly fine foreign allies equivalents. We will rather create our own redundant systems than to rely on outside help. The only recent development that rely on foreign imports are the Naval Strike Missile and the Constellation class frigate, and even those have strong domestic elements. The NSM is used in low quantity on the LCS and will evolve into the JSM while the Constellation has most of its important subsystems domestically produced and the hull is only adopted because it is jsut faster to do it that way. India's reliance on foreign subsystems is an Achilles' heel and it is also obvious that they struggle to develop domestic high tech industry on the same level as China and the West. I will be surprise if they can develop near cutting edge IC microchips - which everything depends on - within the next 40 years. Nothing about their domestic politics stability, national will and focus and technological advancements indicate they are accelerating their catching up. They are consistently two generations behind China and now it seem they are falling even more behind.

The learning curve is still small for China. Simply put, China making an aircraft carrier is not as big a deal as India making an aircraft carrier is. China is a much more advanced industrially developed country. Chinese industrial capacity exceeds Europe and USA combined. It is not very surprising for China to make aircraft carriers, with their knowledge level. For India they had to level up national technological basis a lot. @gelinrefira2 жыл бұрын
@@BengalLancer What I am saying is that the real learning curve lies in developing the domestic industries to make building a high tech asset like a modern super carrier possible. You cannot discount the development of all those industries which are far bigger than a carrier, that allowed a country to build one domestically. I can give you the entire specs, blueprints, even the source code of the F-35 but that doesn't mean you can come close to building a lesser version, much less replicating it, and even less to take the lessons embedded within and design and build your own. Look at Japan and South Korea, even when they are allowed to copy our homework still struggled to develop a domestic 5th gen fighter. These foundations also allow a country to develop their economy even further. Technology is king and the economy ability to bear the weight determine who will win. Without overcoming the huge learning curve of industrial technical know-hows, you will never be able to build something so sophisticated. The fact that China, even when they stole and copy, can build it and even built one better suited to their needs showed that they have surpassed all those learning curves. They have prepared for years to get to this point, and it is foolish to still think that they are a second rate military power or they only build crappy shit or that India comes close to having their self-reliance. The only thing China lacks is warfighting experience, the relevant culture and training and the cadre of veteran officers and generals that can make or break a military campaign. Just look at how the Russians are screwing up in Ukraine. They have the goods, now they need the right people to run them, and because they have not engage recently in modern warfare, they are really lacking in that aspect. Not that it is something we should be proud of, as our war fighting experience comes from killing a lot of people.

India has less need for aircraft carriers than China. Aircraft carrier is meant to fight battles against faraway distant shores, which India has no inherent need for, unlike China. India is not economically dependent on sea lanes passing by Chinese mainland, but China is dependent upon sea lanes passing by Indian mainland. Huge difference. China sees a military need to project power against distant shores due to perceived vulnerability from them. Meanwhile India only sees benefit in fighting in the surrounding waters in its regional vicinity, therefore no huge need to sail aircraft carrier toward Shanghai to bomb it. @@indomitablesin984 But that just shows the limitations of the Indian Navy doesn't it? Funding issues. The fact that most major systems on the Vikrant is dependent on foreign vendors so any delay from them will delay the carrier. Plus the pandemic caused further delays. The PLAN has none of these issues. Their funding is secure at all times. Essentially every component of their carrier and its air wing is domestically sourced. And the pandemic hardly blunted their build schedule at all. The Shandong is a larger superior carrier, and was laid down in 2015, and commissioned by the end of 2019, WHILE the PLA was simultaneously building an 80,000 ton CATOBAR supercarrier, which no other country in the world other than the US has achieved. But the Fujian was launched just 6 years after it was laid down, and by the time it is finished fitting out, it'll have electromagnetic catapults and probably the 5th generation J-35 fighter too. By the time the Indian Navy scrapes up enough funds to start the 15 year process to build the Vishal, China will have their 004 carrier in the water, fully fitted with their J-35 carrier air wing, and possibly packing domestic produced nuclear propulsion system and maybe even a rail gun.

Now instead of rushing a nuclear carrier out the door, they'll probably build an improved Fujian type 004 carrier, and then by the time they want to build nuclear powered 005 carrier, everything about building and running a flat top CATOBAR supercarrier will be mature tech for the Chinese since they have done with the 003 and 004.

I am a Chinese, I will share my thoughts, India has never been our target, like the recent border conflict between our two countries, we have never worried about border issues, it is our confidence in our own strength. Our goal has always been the strongest country in the world, such as the United States. We are not megalomaniacs. But India is far from our opponent. This is not contempt for India, India has made rapid progress in recent years. But this is far from enough. Given the international environment in which India is now, the construction of its aircraft carrier should be much better than it is now. Instead of being built for more than ten years, it still looks like an unfinished rough house. When I see the completion of his superstructure, I feel that he is joking.

And what's worse is that India has a lower learning curve than China, and yet it took too long to get their military projects up to speed. Projects that were supposed to be domestically produced. But yet India still imports equipment, despite the risk that this generates in a modern war. While the PLA can't rely on import much of anything for their massive vehicles. Everything they do has to be made by scratch with enough time in the process to make it correctly. Giving it the specs to surpass its local rivals.

Has the PLAN considered a Naval version of the J-10 or possibly the JF-17 for use on the older Type-001/002 Carrier's
@EurasiaNaval2 жыл бұрын
Interesting thought. I don't think the PLAN ever seriously considered either of the two jets to be carrier compatible, but it is a fair question. The J-10 series only recently adopted a domestic turbofan engine on the most recent airframes (the J-10C). The previous variants used a Russian-made engine that is not quite suitable for the fighter. Because the J-10 is a single-engine fighter, this predicament made its operability on a carrier hazardous, because engine power needs to account for potentially much harsher take-off conditions at sea. As for the JF-17, this fighter is not used operationally by the PLAAF. This is meant to be an affordable yet still competitive light fighter intended for exports to friendly countries, not for domestic use.
@tren133 Жыл бұрын
@@EurasiaNaval They've already built, what, 200 J-20s? I reckon as soon as the J-35 is ready, they can easily replace the entire air wing on the Liaoning/Shandong with J-35 if they want no? The Oto Melera 76mm can fire anti missile/aircraft shells at range higher than most gun based CIWS. They are actually fin stabilized beam riding guided munition with very sophisticated fuses. In fact, the turret have built in radar similar to the Phalanx, SeaRam and of course the Type 730 and the shell rides that radar beam to the target. They are basically anti-air cannons and they are supposed to be scary good. One shell hitting will destroy nearly anything in the air. That's why the Marina Militare put so many on their destroyers.

But Which aircraft do u think the Indians will choose to replace the mig 29 or to start phasing it out of the navy the superhornet or the Rafale?
@EurasiaNaval2 жыл бұрын
This is just my opinion - I think it is more likely the Rafale-M. There is some rumours on Indian defence forums that the elevator on the Vikrant cannot accomodate the Rafale-M, but I have not been able to confirm if this is true. If there this is an issue, I believe the elevators or the wings of the Rafale-M can be modified to resolve it. Purchase of F-18s from the US imo comes with more political strings and limitations than what India is comfortable with, not to mention the potential to affect relations with Russia and China, compared to the French offer. On a technical level, I think the lower max take-off weight of the Rafale-M will be an advantage for a STOBAR carrier. The F-18s can of course take off from a ski-jump, but due to its heavier weight, its permissible payload might be less consistent under the full range of conditions (carrier speed, wind speed, launch position, etc) compared to the Rafale-M.

Both AC of China & India are in service with their respective navy & how well each AC performs in an active combat zone , would depend on many factors like how well trained the crews are, motivation level , effective support systems from satellites, marine & ground all well coordinated to feed the AC with instance data on the enemy. After all, no AC is invincible & maybe a sitting duck when it is in the wrong place & time.

India has been operating carries for decades now, India is probably the only major power that uses both US and Russian equipment & systems in its vessels and still enjoys good relations with both in the world whereas for China, the carriers are mainly a test-bed, China has to produce domestically because the US won't sell its tech to it and even the Russians are aware of China's long history of reverse-engineering Russian tech. As such India uses time-tested weapons & systems on its vessels whereas for China, its all a stop-gap till they can make something better domestically. The United States carrier are extremely protected and secured by a fleet of sophisticated surface, undersea, sensors, radars and advanced support. The purpose of aircraft carrier is to bring your AIR SUPERIORITY IN THE BATTLE GROUND. NO COUNTRY IN THE EARTH CAN MATCH THE UNITED STATES IN TERMS OF OPERATING A MASSIVE SHIP --- NONE WHATSOEVER! Vikrant is a good indigenous design and it’s funny when I see Chinese and Indian nationals attack each other on military threads over perceived insults We must take into account that China was able to buy the Viryag (+ that Australian carrier they Bought) and it’s blueprints which was immensely valuable in learning about large capital ships and the necessary materials and naval building areas which were gonna be developed to begin the massive naval expansion we see now In China So in terms of the ability to produce these ships and the speed of development for a 2nd carrier like 003 shows that China is ahead clearly considerably when it comes to production and development India on the other hand has much more experience as they’ve had previous carriers in their fleet And have another one in service right now if I’m not mistaken Vikrant for me is an Indian version of Shandong (an updated version itself of Liaoning)- it shows that they are clearly building up and developing blue water navy capabilities without the pains that China went thru as China rushed itself whereas India is taking a steady approach However the speed of construction is genuinely pathetic compared to China which might even commission 003 by the time Vikrant is commissioned But ship to ship between Vikrant and shandong I would say that the technology used on the Vikrant + the ship itself shows to be slightly more modern then the shandong When the Indian “002” carrier becomes a reality I believe that it will go straight to a 003 style carrier in terms of design and layout Great video as always mate

Thanks my dude - a balance comment. I agree that Vikrant and Shandong are essentially similar to each other as far as naval aviation capabilities go. The difference between the Chinese and Indian experience comes down to domestication and the project pace. Both India and China had some advantages in the field of carrier development, as you say - China bought the Liaoning (Varyag) and the Melbourne, while India has operated carriers for longer than China has. But for some reason, China has pulled ahead of India in recent years - I suspect the lack of necessity to develop domestic technology in at least some key components play a big role (everyone wants to sell to India, but only some countries to China). I think certain technology used on the Vikrant is more advanced (gas turbine engines), but in most respects the two are similar technologically (AESA search radar, ski-jump, 4th gen fighters), and in some areas Shandong is more advanced (CIWS). As an aside, I got a question for you: I noticed the INS Vikramaditya does not use jet blast deflectors when launching fighters... do you know if JBDs are going to be installed on Vikrant? Also, it is unfortunate that attacks are thrown around in the conversations - they are disheartening to read.

China is trying to catch up with the U.S in all aspects and on other hand India wants to compare every things with china as well. why does India compare with Chinese training aircraft carrier? they already said that first two( twins aircraft carriers) for learning and training purposes. Chinese type 03 about to launch with electromagnetic catapults used CATOBAR system and type 04 is under construction nuclear power , type 05 , type 06 etc. Chinese made improvement by building one by one and we are agreed with Indians saying that they have more experienced operating aircraft carriers than Chinese since in 1961(first Indian operated aircraft carrier),but Indian the most advance aircraft carrier still using ski jump and Chinese technologies advantage will offset the differences.

Building a carrier and fighting with are two different skills. China has only had use of a Russian built carrier to gain expereince with. That Russian carrier is not very well built. The United States has used carriers since WWI (yeah the FIRST World War). They used carriers extensively in WWII. They have used carriers around the world for over 100 years. The US Navy knows how to use these things in battle. China has a lot to learn in that regard. Expereince matters... a lot.

At this point everyone is wondering how well the Russian equipment will perform in a real fight. If the Ukraine war is any indication, it will perform badly compared to the Chinese equipment which is tested to death and performs exactly according to specs. Last I heard rumors are that Russia is pulling chips from dish washers and washing machines to put into new tanks. Which makes you wonder if they can get chips for planes and other things. Never mind the AESA radar.

Russia also lost a lot of institutional war fighting knowledge and experience over the years, and is marred by ill-prepared logistics managed by incompetent commanders and manned by poorly trained soldiers and officers. Heck, their pilots have barely any chances to rack up flight hours, much less participate in intense combat training like Red Flag exercises that push pilots, ground crew and logistics to their limits. It is something the Chinese themselves have identify they are lacking and they want to do the same kind of training. It doesn't matter how good your assets are if the people manning them are not up to the standard.
