A medical team from a hospital in southern China’s Guangdong province recently visited a woman who had a 34kg tumour removed from her uterus 4 years ago. Li Qingfeng was diagnosed with a uterine fibroid in 2012. Since she could not afford the treatment, her waistline increased to 143cm in 5 years, which affected her daily life. With the help of charitable organisations, Li underwent an 8-hour removal surgery in 2017.

It's not easy to organise these kind of complex medical cases for free. These complex cases aren't regular procedure that junior doctors are trained for, they require the work of a team of specialists that are at the top of their respective fields. And the complexity of the operation means that it can only be performed in a large hospital, not a single doctor's surgery clinic. And most of these specialists need to all work at the same hospital as well, as having too many external specialists will further complicate arranging the operation (e.g. they may not be familiar with the host hospital internal procedures, nurses staffs, etc, and they'll have to put aside their regular duties). Even if you, as a single doctor are willing to work for free on this type of case, you'll have to find a half dozen other specialists that will agree to that as well. And then even if all the doctors agree to take the case for free, someone still have to pay for equipments, hospital rooms, and other consumables/single use items (medicines, blood, IV, etc). The complexity of arranging such thing can only be done by the government, or a very determined charitable organisations. And having money to spend will still definitely help grease things up even if most of the people involved agreed to take the case for free.

These doctors are the kind of people that we should look up to. Not some actor or entertainer that does nothing to better the world we live in, and yet they earn millions each year. Sad world we live in.
@lewangoalski9925
@lewangoalski9925 2 жыл бұрын
I’m not saying that’s entirely untrue but personally i feel that you’d have to acknowledge the fact that actors and entertainers do put in many hours of training and rigour to perfect their skills, they do suffer sleepless nights and also stress, it would be quite cruel to just simply discredit their hard work. Moreover they do contribute to society in the sense where THEY are the ones we look to for entertainment and relieving stress. While they do earn much more than doctors, there’s not much we can do about it, supply and demand. But I’m sure many of them still give back to society by donating to charities. Just a more optimistic viewpoint here.

Of course it’s admirable that doctors can save lives, of course we should appreciate them, but we need not bring other professions down just to justify that. Who do doctors turn to to wind down? Makes me question China's healthcare. If the tumor was even just a kilo some doctor should have already flagged it as dangerous to her health. They waited for it to get to 34 kilos? That's the weight of a teenager. Nobody thought of getting her help? That's insanely negligent.
