As we get a lot of questions about the effect of chiptuning or remapping on fuel economy, we thought it would be quite interesting to shine some light on this topic and clear up some things.

correct me if I’m wrong, I believe the only way to increase both power and efficiency is if you have made physical changes to the engine. Such as better flowing heads or better flowing intake manifolds that would allow the engine to function as a more efficient air pump.

You can remap the air fuel ratio amongst other things in the ECU which will increase MPG.

Yeah this guy in the video ain't right all the way, there's more to it than just "add fuel" as timing matters more than the amount of fuel, advancing and tuning the SOI and EOI you can make your car more efficient, also raising rail pressure will allow your nozzles to be more efficient by making diesel in smaller droplets that burn faster and therefore you have the power available sooner, as the piston is up there the pressure on it is higher, so, for the same speed your fuel will decrease. This happens if you take the engine from a passat PD130 and install PD130 engine from audi, injectors are different and you will go to 10L to 100km and that's a lot of fuel. I remapped it and now it takes about 6 on that heavy car. Stock was about 7.5L to 100km, all I did was change the afr and injector timings. That's what brings you better economy, this guy in the video has a lot to learn before teaching people.

I've got a diesel and mine does like 0.2l/100km less, after the remap. This is still a win, considering it has more power. I had it remaped for comfort, and easyer overtakes. After the first week of fooling around with the new power, I just got back to my regular driving. Also, my DPF regens are at least as good as before, and no trace of smoke what so ever.

I have an audi A5 1.8. Petrol Turbo charged, stage 2 ECU remapping. I've found that if i go real fast, lets say over 50 mph speed the petrol goes down real quick. But keeping my speed at a constant 50 mph on the motorway (when and where i can) my comsumption is amazingly low, and if i never stopped going i could with a full 60lt tank, get 630 miles out of the car. I could basically if traffic condition would allow for it, stay on sixth gear and never change it again. I figured that the engine having more torque and power, requires less effort to move the same amount of weight, than before the tuning and not working so hard like before the tuning, therefore using less fuel. Does this reasoning make any sense to you? You could of course say, what's the bloody point of having a remapping to increase power and speed in the first place, if all you do is wanting to go slow to save fuel, hahaha. But that's another story. Lol Regards, SergioUK.

what information i don't think i received from this, is what about the turbo? by chip tuning diesel engines, aren't they actually making the turbo work harder to have higher air pressure to burn the fuel with better efficiency and also generate more torque ? this of course without adding more fuel. so.... => fuel economy? please correct me if i understood this wrong
@svrautosport1632
@svrautosport1632 3 жыл бұрын
No the main reason why you have to up the boost pressure is because you need the correct amount of air entering the cylinders to be able to inject more fuel. If you would just ad the fuel, you would have excessive amount of smoke which could clog the DPF.

It hasn't been the case with my 1.5 dci with piggyback. Accelerating up a steep dual carriageway from Maidstone from 50 to 70 mph without piggyback the instant mpg was around 30.5mpg. With the piggyback in +30% setting it was 23.2mpg (and accelerated alot faster). This indicates around 30% more fuel use due to 30% more power. Overall obd mpg is the same and about 5% more than actual calculations. But I have 30 hp and 75 nm more.

Hi, I like your style of mythbusting the consumption saving on diesel engines, but you've made and missed a few crucial things. In both ways a piggyback "powerbox" and a commercial tune can lower consumption even if they're calibrated. The main reason for this is the fact that there's more torque, on a manual gear car you'll be able to shift alot sooner to the next gear. Less rpm's equals less injection. You compare a piggy back to a decalibrated injector opeing time, this is incorrect since most piggy back will add more rail pressure (without the ECU monitiring it), from what I know the only brand of piggy back's that increases the injector opening time is Steinbauer (wich is used by alot of big tuning companies like AC Schitzer). But, most importantly I disagree with what you say you can't lower the the consumption because the engineers will always do a better job". Let me get into detail: if you correctly calibrate the SOI (start of injection), EGR maps (I'm not talking about disabling, but optimising), recalibrate the rail pressure accordingly, set a higher boost pressure and adjust your lambda target maps you will get less consumption, but to be complete: NOx emissions will raise, so will the combustion chamber pressure (but that happens with past ECU modified cars too (the so called stage 2 and on remaps). There will be more energy released for each amount of injection. The calibration engineers at the factories have to keep all emissions and safety limits in mind, but as a "tuner" you can adjust these things to get a lower consumption, not only on the odometer, but also in reality (more mileage for a certain amount of fuel), if you combine that with the first subject: the increased torque and potentially drive in lower rpm's you get the correct explanation. Is decalibrating correct: no, it's certainly not, but your debunk is easily debunked as you can see.

If the car is running rich from factory and you tune it, you lean it out so your not using more fuel. I have a series 1 and the series 5 uses 2 litres per hundred less than mine. I have asked tuner and they said i will get two litres better fuel economy from a tune so it makes sense. Same motor in each series. But yeah i will probably drive it harder so no real world difference.
@svrautosport1632

With dpf they run always lean to not clog the dpf, anyway, still the same, you don't make power by adding air but with adding fuel. Have you tried to recalculate the fuel consumption instead of trusting the fuel consumption gauge

@@svrautosport1632 I have also chipped my car since 3 years and consumption was like -1l / 100 km less, my fuel consumption gauge is broken so i always calculate it manually, and it's still right, so you're definitely wrong in this one.

@svrautosport1632

It does, but they most off the time they only increase soi in full load rows. While for consumption you should tune part throttle stuff. And if you want to camibrate soi more correctly you need really a lot of time because you have to be able to test every particilar cell of the map, which 90% of the tuners doesn't even care about. Imagine this, how long does it take most tuningshops to tune a car ...
