As an American who has toured in Europe, we don’t even bother with expensive hotels. We just bring along a small tent and stay in the local campgrounds. Campgrounds in Europe (especially Italy) are pretty different from those in the U.S. and are generally pretty friendly and accommodating. Of course, having to set up and take down a tent can get pretty annoying, but you can also use pop-up tents that are pretty effortless to set up. Great choice if you don’t mind the bugs. For food, we usually just go to the nearest Aldi/Lidl and cook back at the campsite on small propane stoves. Occasionally we will eat at a local restaurant to experience local cuisine.

The same way champagne is sparkling white wine from that region of France. Also, red cabbage absolutely stinks when boiled. The only thing worse smelling of vegetables boiled is asparagus. Of course it’s horrid. How me of me. Getting worked up about the semantics of pickled cabbage. The “sauerkraut of Theseus” at best, that was, or my name isn’t Rudolph. Which it is. Honestly Norwich is lovely, I’ve lived here my entire life. There’s a really nice cat cafe you could’ve gone to which is pretty cheap (£12.50 with a free drink). It’s a shame you didn’t seem to do more! There’s so many old streets that are gorgeous too, lots of history with the castle and various other areas. Some of the shops there save me from going downtown, and I prefer buying (or ordering) books at the bookstore here, instead of at amazon (Jeff Bezos is rich enough methinks). im from finland, and the differences in social interactions here vs the uk are fascinating to me. in the uk, waiters/waitresses will talk to you about their own life, people are much more bold about complimenting others, and in all the social interactions in the uk from what ive had so far have been very pleasant. everyone in finland keeps to themselves most of the time, and its really unusual for finnish standards to compliment the way somebody looks, or to just have a casual chat with a cashier/waitress/waiter.
@nattly6340Ай бұрын
thats definitely not normal in the UK, as someone who lives here. granted ive been complemented on my hair a few times but thats about it, bar that speaking to people other than the ones you are working with is super rare and ive never had any waiter talk to me or seen one talk to someone else, just a friendly "can i get x"
@urphakeandgey6308Ай бұрын
That's odd because I hear people say that about Americans compared to Brits. Basically, Americans are way more open to small talk, complimenting, and other small niceties. Especially if you aren't in a big city. Small town America is notoriously friendly that it's even a culture shock to Americans from the city. If you like that kind of culture, I recommend visiting the USA and trying to visit smaller towns. Don't go to NYC or LA. Everyone there is very mean.

@@nattly6340You might be hearing this for the first time but maybe you just live in a not great area? Either that or somewhere more urban like in London where people are too busy to care about that kind of stuff. Hi, I was born in the Uk. Moved to Australia when I was 5 and have lived here for almost 13 years. I’m currently 18, only been back to the Uk once, and the culture shock is insane. Having mostly grown up in Australia, I got used to the dynamic culture and the overall atmosphere of the country. Going back to the Uk was definitely an eye opener to how different, but also how similar the countries actually are. Even my parents were shocked about how different the country was in comparison to when we left. In such a short amount of time the country almost feels like it was flipped completely, and I think I realised just how good my family and I have it being in Australia, or how good we have it just not being in the Uk… I miss my extended family, kinda wish I was able to grow up with and wish that I could see them more, I’ll still have to go back at some point soon hopefully!

the enshittification of everything strikes again as an american this is really opening my eyes lol. like logic dictates that it's happening everywhere of course but i've never really been particularly attuned to what exactly it looks like anywhere else.
@davianthule2035Ай бұрын
@@draco6349 well, imagine you live in x place in europe, with said local pub (which often times is a resteraunt and was also often a historic inn, like in ireland, many pubs actually still call themselves Inns despite not offering it anymore etc), now, add that its been apart of your locality for centuries (a good chunk of notable pubs/inns in ireland are literally older then the USA itself for example), and its suddenly gone and replaced with JOHNS BOOZE AND BEER. Yeh...its not great, and this is not actually an example of enthitifcation, Enshitification is a post 1980s phenomena (i.e when corporations shifted heavily towards maximising shareholder value), where companies will enter a market (or create a new one entirely in the case of tech occasionally), make amazing good services or at least decent ones, then start turning the shitty screws once they captured enough market share and market power that consumers and business customers will tolerate it. It was literally netflix's business plan for example, i.e come out with amazing streaming service outperforming basically everything, and then turn back into cable TV once an overwhelming market share was achieved, got scuppured by everyone else who has Intellectual properties of note realising they can do the same thing. No, the chains and franchises taking over everything is a phenonoma of capitalism that began after ww2. Basically since governments everywhere effectively made monopolies illegal and will penalise them (and most businesses also don't like dealing with one either), corporations and capital shifted towards oligopoly instead, which neo-marxist economists wrote extensively about in the 60s-80s as an update to marxist theory (because capitalism changed alot since marx's day, in marx's day gold backed currency was the norm, central banking as we know it today didnt exist back then etc, recessions in the modern day are a joke compared to the recessions that occured in marx's day up to the great depression etc which prompted the emergence of modern central banking). Speaking of neomarxist (sorry, autistic, I like nerding out), neomarxists are ironically rather socially conservative and capitalism naturally doing its thing really pissed them off because capitalism literally erodes culture and society, instead of centuries old irish pub, its Jack and Johns booze crews now, everywhere, that and jazz pissed them off, Adorno who was the most famous neo-marxist for instance basically said jazz ends your manhood, no, seriously, look that up. Right wingers talking about neomarxists as anti western culture meanwhile actually reading neomarxists ranting about the decline of western culture caused by capitalism doing its thing is never not hilarious. extra nerd note, enthitification is the first time a big criticism of capitalism has emerged that has basically zero connection to the marxist gang at all and not even tied to economics, but technology of all things.

In addition, Not Greg can be seen intensely staring at a computer, most likely streaming the hit game Forkknife to his 4 Twitch followers, whereas Greg would be more likely to accost passerby with assurances that "he would always be there if you needed him" and promptly use natural camouflage to disappear into the surrounding environment. In conclusion, this is Not Greg not Greg, as can be seen by the distinctive mustache and exhibition of behavior characteristic of Not Greg; while it may seem difficult to determine between the two, with enough practice you will begin to learn to spot the differences mentioned above and thus become skilled in the essential art of differentiating between Not Greg and Greg.

And so many more little references that I'd rather not pack into a single KZbin comment, otherwise we'd be here all day.

I went on a trip to london not too long ago and aside from the most traumatic ten hour flight back that I will never forget, I really miss it and want to go back

In Cambs the best places to go to are honestly the free museums and art exhibits, fitzwilliam is an absolute banger!!! And there’s also a lot of really nice family owned cafes and also classes like pottery! The universities are only a small pocket of the city it’s so slayful

Hi! I’m a student living in Cambridge (currently). There’s a lot more of it to explore if you really step out of your comfort zone, especially with the punting and exploring the different colleges. I’ve lived her for three years now and you do end up finding things to do… but if you don’t know what you’re looking for, you can find yourself being done with it in a couple hours honestly. I’ve always said it’s less of a City and more of a big town (with a lot of history)

I'm from Dover and it sounds like you fell in to most of the tourist traps (except the castle which you can easily spend a full day at) which is sad to hear. There are plenty of good pubs and places to eat around town that locals will go to but they're usually a little off the beaten path.The Wetherspoons is also considered pretty bad, even compared to other spoons.

Pretty sure Cambridge gets tourists because of its College. I don't know if College is 1st place for why where I am gets tourists or 2nd place, but if it wasn't for the arrangements, and leaves, I guess restaurants would be it, which makes sense for the degrees away from where you went. Also, don't worry, I'd fall for the tent trick too, despite the fact that it is pretty much an unwritten rule that anywhere nearby a place where people literally eat, sleep and drink the intellect away from other places, the cheapest option is a bait option.
