We have a slightly smaller version of the same Champion chipper/shredder. It doesn't have a throttle, but rather a governor like is found on lawnmowers etc. Unfortunately, it has a tendency to throw chips back onto the engine whenever the bag is used, and if the chips accumulate, they sit right on the exhaust and tend to catch fire...As the gas tank is mounted on top of the engine, a fire is VERY dangerous, so best to either use it without the bag (which makes a horrible mess) or to keep a fire extinguisher on hand...

Not sure if you've considered this, but have you thought of getting an HVAC boot, some nuts/bolts and some dryer pipe to make a taller discharge chute? That way you could put the chips in a wheelbarrow or small cart.

I use a rubber tie-down strap wrapped around the neck of the bag to help seal any gaps and prevent that kind of blow-back. A bungee cord of the right length should also work. Also be sure to empty the bag before it fills up. I think it's safe to empty the bag, via the zipper at the end, with the engine running, but you should expect some material to fly around while you're doing that. I empty mine into a 5-gallon bucket and then dump the bucket into a barrel or on to my compost pile.

Ours ultimately DID catch fire which destroyed the carbureter and air intake. We replaced it with a REAL wood chipper with a hydraulically driven feed roller, that we drive using the PTO on our tractor. MUCH BETTER- but also 5x more expensive.

wheres the wood chipper review though... just talked about safety tips for 5 minutes.. this chipper actually looked like it self fed ferally well compared to others but anything 15hp and under is just not going to have the power for anything except small yard maintenance and it seems the impellar and drum style units kick back too much and are hard to feed, for flat bar style blades 90degrees opposited seems to give a courser shred but it allows the machine to actually feed the branches in and not run out of power

We have a 7.5 hp Champion and it self-feeds just fine on the chipping end. The "shredder" basically makes a mess of stuff- too coarse to use the result for mulch without re-feeding it.

When it starts it's great, but often it's impossible to start. Replacing the spark plug! One needs to be Houdini to be able to replace it. Poorly designed.

I've had trouble re-starting mine when the engine is warm. I've found it helpful to set the choke, give it a pull or two, then take the choke off and pull again.
