VIDEO INFORMATION
Episode 5 of Dark Matter was kind of a slow one for me. Don’t get me wrong, I was fully on board with the emotional gut punches, weird new worlds, and discovering lost friends, but I’m going to need some more breadcrumbs to understand where the heck all of this is leading.
Enough of my complaining, you know the drill. Shoot up your dose of Lavender Fairy, and prepare for some interdimensional box traveling.
Amanda and Jason 1 continue their adventure, sinking to the bottom of Lake Michigan, while bonding a bit more. Playing a childhood word game called Ghost, which I had to look up, because I’ve never even heard of this, and talk about specifics to their respective worlds, like favorite candy bars. Jason mentions a yellow wrapped candy with confetti on the packaging, which is probably a Sugar Daddy bar. Interestingly enough, both the Ghost game and candy bar allude to things we later see in this episode, for example, Amanda being a ghost to her mother who is grieving her death, and Jason 2 is trying to be a legit Sugar Daddy, buying Daneila and Charlie gifts in turn to get love. Also Dare bars do exist, or a “Dare” bar exists in our world. Dark chocolate, wafers, I guess the writer’s just assumed, and you know what they say about assuming
We learn more about the box’s functionality, obviously staying in the exact same spot in every single universe, which could mean it’s at the bottom of a lake or worse, personally I really hope this is expanded upon. Anyway just saying the qualities of the world the box user wants to get to isn’t enough, because of their subconscious intentions. Behind every word, promise, and so forth, our own potentially nefarious intentions can bleed over. Amanda and Jason waking up to realize the box has chosen, or they subconsciously chose while dreaming is another cool wrinkle, which happens to put them in the world where Blair Caplan, the first Velocity labs personnel to go missing, had been hiding out at. Before I move on, the reason they find Blair is because they were talking about her and the other missing Velocity employees, fell asleep, and I’m assuming these thoughts were still in their psyche, annnnnnnddd transported them to where she was at. This could be useful for future episodes.

One thing I noticed, Jason 2 is explaining to Leighton 1 that they can only visit worlds adjacent to their own, where they have existed or exist and the worlds we see them visit all seem kinda normal. But this doesn't correlate with what Jason 1 and Amanda 2 have been through, they have seen some really crazy worlds that seem far removed from their own. So maybe Jason 1 has access to a wider variety of worlds than Jason 2, maybe because his mind isn't trained to use the box and so his thoughts go wild and allow him to go to these bizarre places. Also, I bet we'll se a multiversal Council of Jasons down the line.

maybe jason 1 will have to go on his own to find his home world. jason 2 had to tell leighton to clear his mind so he could control the world doors.

The fact that the box sank as soon as they opened the door and another box appeared on the highway when Jason & Leighton visited one world tells me that the boxes didn't just appear in all the worlds at the same time. They have to visit the place for the box to appear... I'm wondering if that means the box stays there forever once it appears. I like to understand the details of the mechanics, the rules.

Guys, understand this is a book adaptation, and they need to follow the source material at least for the first season, though there are some changes, Leatons 1and 2 ever entered the box, but the world's Jason 1 and Amanda are entering are consistent for the most part and it's important to them learning to control the box. Jason 2 had alot of practice and that's what they are getting. Be patient the world's will get wackier...

I’m really enjoying this show. I’m looking at it from a point of how we can focus on what we want and get it. All of our choices, good and bad, make our reality. What if we just focused on the good? Would we be living the perfect life we’ve always wanted? Does the perfect life exist? Many things to think about……

I’m NOT a fan of monsters & creatures, so I hope the show doesn’t go in that direction. IMO, the growing narrative is the relationship between Jason1 and Amanda. You theorize that Amanda will die (actually, she already HAS-in two different worlds), and I think so too. But, my thinking is that Amanda will die, in order for Jason1 and Daniela to get back together again. Right now, Jason1 is growing closer & closer to Amanda-while his Main Quest is to reunite with Daniela & Charley. There’s no room for Amanda, after Jason1 reunites with his family; so, Amanda must die. I like your theory about the two medical professionals in the Virus-ravished world, actually being the two other people who entered the Box in Jason2 & Amanda’s world. I feel that those two other “travelers” are going to be important. Finally, I think Blair and Max will also be important characters. A version of Blair could be a “patient zero” for a disease, being spread from universe to universe. And, Max (as you suggest) could be the incentive for Daniela & Charley to ponder “choosing” to align with Jason2 in a world that includes Max-and not Jason1. Great mind-binding series…that does NOT need creatures & monsters!

The only thing that they need is for Amanda to clear her mind so Jason can focus on his world only (Which they dont know yet). The same thing that the fake Jason and Leighton did when they entered the box. Unless that was a loophole that they missed.

There’s definitely a romantic vibe happening between Amanda & Jason1. It will complicate Jason1’s decision to return to Daniela & Charley. Quick thought: what if Jason1 decides to allow Jason2 to take Daniela & Charley to a world-that includes Max? And, Jason1 remains with New Love, Amanda. Would that be a Happy Ending for everyone?

Jason2 specifically mentioned that they don't have access to the full breadth of the multiverse, only parallel worlds to their own, where they currently exist or have existed... So, what if Amanda never existed in Jason1's world? That might be the sole reason they can't both go there, she is literally keeping him from getting home by being in the box with him, if that's the case. Just thinking outside the box, so to speak.

My understanding is that the twin storyline is not in the book and I think that could be a major plot point. Why else add it? The temptation of visiting the lost is way too tempting for a character to pass up on, especially for a parent of a child who died. If he could find a reality where Max is still alive, who also happens to be left alone and bring him back to Jason 1's world... I'm thinking the reverse of your idea of Jason 2. Maybe better, he finds a universe where Daniela, Charlie and Max are alive, but their Jason is dead... That's too much of a happy ending, I'm sure. This is already an alternate version of the book itself, so at least it can't be spoiled if it goes in a different direction from the book.

@@JBuckStudios Thanks. It could very much be wishful thinking on my part, most likely. I'm saying that as someone who has dealt with a lot of death. It would be a superpower to see your loved one breathing again. I think in the last episode (4th), that Jason 2 took Leighton 1 to see his grandfather in another universe (though it was not explicitly stated) WHILE they were explaining what happened to Max. I think that was a huge hint at the possibility of this being a future plot point. Chekhov's gun sorta thing? Maybe? It could just be a red herring.

@@JBuckStudios I'm hoping it's not just a "Schrödinger's cat" reference kind of thing, since he has a living son and a dead son. I thought of that with the shot of Daniela and Charlie at the tree, which is growing out of a wooden box with Max's ashes mixed in the soil. I want him to at least see him alive in one of the worlds, maybe even both sons together. It could be enough for him to just know that he's alive and well in another world.

I absolutely love this show. It's always been my favourite genre and loved sliders in the 90s. I have read this and many other parallel universe books, however I really can't remember how it turns out, so I'm excited to see what happens 😀

Jason-teacher will end up in wold, where Maximilian, his first sun, is alive! And he will start act, like Jason-scientist acted towards him! Cause He want that World, where all his Family. But in last moment will stop and return to cube. Also, Amanda will encourage him to find his own world, she just afraid of being lonely. She is very dangerous person!

For Good Jason to get back to his universe, he can't just think of his house, her hair, what his local bar looks like. He has to feel it. He should think of a specific deeply personal memory of his wife and son. The kind of memory that that would overwhelm him with emotions. That's why Bad Jason visited his ex wife right before going in the box. He had to get in touch with all his past feelings.

Remember a couple of episodes ago when Amanda opened a door and Jason wasn't in the same cell/section when she did it. I don't think this Amanda is the same one he started this journey with. He immediately opened a door and she was there but that universe would have been instantly created at that decision point so was the next door along... Which he opened

since the bad jason went to the good jasons world it spawned there automatically. like the other boxes that spawned in random places like the ocean and the freeway.

I like the show but the box being in every world bugs me. Who built it? It’s always there but sits in traffic? Very interesting story but you can’t think to deeply into it, bc the plot holes cave in on itself. This episode was the first time I really watched the intro and I think it says a lot more than what we initially view

The box is in a superposition so it could be everywhere all at once it needs to be built and used once then it will be in every universe at the same place of the company

The Doctor in the Contagion earth is the same doctor who treated Jason 1 in the 2nd Episode when he was in Jason 2 earth, so I am guessing they are likely to be a recurring character.
