CHIPs (and Adam-12)were part of the reasons I became a police officer (and still am but soon to retire after 40 years). They showed the way police officers pretty much handled things and that we weren't mean like some people made us out to be (kind of like now??). Looking forward to more CHIPs "investigations" by Rick.

I lived in California pretty much all of the 80's. I chose California because of this show when I was offered a choice while in the Marines. The only thing I knew about California was this TV show. What I didn't know was the difference between northern Cal and southern Cal. I chose Concord, CA and was quickly taught the difference. I did end up in SoCal from 85-90 so I did get to experience all the spoils of SoCal. It's funny. I loved this show back in the 70's but never realized that I had driven past this division a thousand times when leaving LA, via the Santa Monica freeway (I-10) The last time I left LA for good, I just happened to be looking to my right as I got onto the freeway. That's when I saw the old CHP location where they filmed this show. All those years that I entered that freeway and never noticed that location. I didn't see it again until 20-years later when I visited SoCal. I got lost one night and ended up driving right into that parking lot. I was like a kid at Christmas when I realized where I was. So much so that I returned the next day, just to take some pictures. I even posted them on my channel. That was a good time for TV. I could still watch those reruns today.

I met Larry Wilcox in 1981 in Minneapolis when he was promoting motorcycle safety. He posed for a picture with me. He was a decent guy. It was a good moment. I saw a picture of one of their filming rigs. When they are riding side by side, holding perfect formation, they are actually on a trailer that is being towed by a truck that has all the necessary lights, etc.

John was a real proficient motorcyclist. Ponch had never ridden and was taught for the show. There were a couple shows where Ponch was seen in a hospital visited by all the Chip buddies. He had a cast on his arm. Well, that was real. He had fallen off his bike while filming and broke it.

CHiPS was on after I was working full time, so not a regular viewer until reruns. I so enjoy your detailed tracking of locations, then and now. As a kid in San Diego, CA in the 1950's I loved Broderick Crawford's "Highway Patrol," based largely on the California Highway Patrol, even down to the shoulder patches. Although, we never saw two-door Buicks (or whatever TV used) as CHP units. By today's culture, making a show about two human beings doing good as law enforcement officers might not succeed. Innocent times. Rick, praying your 4 legged pal has recovered and you are doing well and staying safe.

CHIPS came out when I was seven years old and we had the same Zenith TV with the big metal on/off knob above the channel knobs and I'll never forget in the winter taking one's own life in your hands when turning it on or off and getting the zap of your life from the static electricity as the arc could be heard sometimes in the next room. The last time I saw an episode of CHIPS I was in a MEPS facility in the late 80's getting processed into the military. I think I can catch up on some episodes on Amazon Prime.

CHiPs was a must see in the late 1970s. The show had glaring mistakes with continuity, film equipment in view, and in story-lines... so much so that the mistakes appeared almost every week in a TV Guide 'Goofs' column. Nevertheless, I enjoyed watching the show, partly because of all those mistakes, such as a shattered windshield in one car crash scene becoming magically intact in the next. Great Video!

I drove a bike in LA for years. Used to bike with friends and we traveled on the LA frwy's often. Chips TV show violated a major safety rule in biking in that you NEVER travel side by side with another bike. It's always a 'staggered' position, especially on the freeway. Also, when you can't see the tires, and it's a two-shot with both guys driving their bikes, they're being pulled on a trailer for the camera shot. Like here: 1:08 It would be crazy to drive this close next to another bike.

Hi Rick! This was a fun one! Timing was perfect for the original CHiPs production to use brand new, unfinished freeways for filming. No public traffic, and likely no permits either. It appears the smaller building at the CHP station may be a vehicle maintenance facility, as was in the original design. The old joke: What do you get when CHP meets up with DPS (AZ Highway Patrol)? Chips & Dips! Ba dum.
@RedBud3152 жыл бұрын
I'm sure they still had all the permits because you know the city and state have to get their cut.
