This was really informative. I thought a lot about whether to use Chockfast when I was re-bedding struts on a FRP boat. I decided to use thickened vinylester and squeeze it of the pocket out instead. Watching you work with it is really so valuable just in terms of understanding the hardness of the cured product. As you know, it's expensive stuff to do trial and error with. The heat released is something I had not considered and could be a fire hazard concern working on a FRP boat.

@@teeanahera8949 Nope, it isn't. But smoking hot can be, and a large enough volume of epoxy can get very hot. I've personally been in a situation in which adjacent balsa core began to smoke after I filled a void approximately the volume of a tennis ball with 105/205 on a 80 F day. Wrong hardener for that temperature, and it scared the shit out of me.

They make a product called torque seal used in (among other things) aviation which is kind of like puffy paint in a tube. It’s designed to act like a better version of your paint markers on the nuts and bolts. Since it’s kind of puffy any movement of the bolt at all will break it and a chunk will fall off making it very obvious on a visual inspection.

I used ChockFast on my Aluminum Boat hull to stop a Leak. It showed me where the leak was and second coat stopped it. They wanted four thousand to replace all the rivets etc. It is a Sea Ark and that was several years ago. Absolutely no problem. Clean surface Pour Dry. It was a $400.00 fix. It will stick to anything. I did use the whole gallon just for the heck of it.

It makes me wonder if the more correct technique is to apply a bead of putty around the mounts before putting the engine/trans in place, then have it squish creating a dam for the chockfast. With them in place I wonder if a can of expanding foam would work well for creating the dam along the back instead of corflute/sikaflex. That way you can have it expand to fill the gaps and chisel away any bits that get in the way, then fill with the chockfast.

I won't lie, I am very anxious to see your sea trials. Then it's only a matter of time before we see Antarctica. BTW, I watched a KZbin series about a homemade catamaran sailing down to Antarctica and the science teams down there invited the sailors to come inside their quarters and drink vodka with them and stay for a little while. Be really careful if you go in the water down there, Leopard seals bite and they are very fast and vicious.

I've always wondered exactly what kind of 'Research' you intend to do, and will it be something that isn't redundant, since there are presently 17 oceanographic vessels in operation. I'm all for 'more' research, but would be interested to see something investigated that is kind of ignored by the big, heavily funded military and university projects. Perhaps something along the lines of the mating habits of the urban Kiwi, or how many James Boags it takes before the pink Narwhals show up... But then, if you couldn't tell, I'm not an Oceanographer...🤪

I guess I do not know what I am talking about, but it seems to me that the engine mount material is not really a good idea. It would seem that typical engine mounts like what is used in motor vehicles (i.e., rubber) would be more appropriate to reduce the engine vibration being transferred to the rest of the ship. I guess I am confused. Thanks for your story.
