I got off of a massive Valium dependency and I know the feeling. It was hell. It's strange that benzo addiction is so little known, particularly because benzos are legal and most benzo addicts are created by doctors. The crackdown has started though. Ten years too late for me, but oh well.
@squamish4244
@squamish4244 6 жыл бұрын
I did manage to get off the Valium in a clinic. They prescribed me an anti-seizure drug called Gabapentin which binds to the same receptor sites exhausted by benzos in a slightly different way and keeps them from freaking out when the benzos are removed. The Gabapentin was not addictive. I got off that too. The problem is that after five years on Valium and then five years of being clean, my brain has had a hell of a time adjusting. I already had OCD and panic disorder beforehand so the benzos inflamed that to a ridiculous degree. I am getting better, it's just been incredibly slow. You might want to look into Gabapentin or similar medications like Oxcarbazepine, they can work wonders for killing withdrawal symptoms. I was taken off of 20% of the Valium in one night in detox and was terrified of the withdrawal symptoms but they never came. It was amazing. But much better if you can do it outside of a facility, then you can go slowly and your brain will adjust better. They pulled me off so fast my anxiety soared, as it was not well controlled by the Gabapentin. I hope that helps. You've done very well, I can't believe you didn't die mixing opiates and benzos in huge doses like that.

The 1st choose life speech was full of optimism even though it was about achieving a mundane life. This speech is on the other side, the way down, full of regret and disappointment. Returning to what they were trying to escape in the 1st film. I think it's brilliant

@duanescot

Agreed, the first speech had a more optimistic tone, as in the vocal tone, but the message was just as pessimistic, though it was tinged with the unknowing of just how depressing that life could be. The 2nd one just confirms that fuck, that mundane life was infinitely worse than we all originally suspected, monotony of our modern world CONFIRMED

I love how at the first half of the speech he indicts society then in the second half its like his grown self starts own up to his own shortcomings and that society is only half the culprit. Starts at victimhood and ends at self introspect and it's really really melancholic at how much it hits home in my life. So much time wasted either self indulging or worrying about my future that I wasted my best years. Of course, it was amusing at the time.

The fact that the content of his monologue is so relatable kind of scares me. When you're young, you feel like you have all the time in the world and anything can be left to be done tomorrow. As times goes by, piling up your fuck-ups and moldering your unchanging life - except for the new wrinkles and dead eyes, of course - a sense of urgency bursts out of your chest, and you can only hope to finally have the fortitude to change before there any semblance of a soul is gone from your being. Happy 30th birthday.

I think it doesn't matter when it hits but that it even hits at all. Some will go through their life, never realizing just how much of their misery was their own fault. Trainspotting and T2 really show that, no matter how many times you fuck up, or how insurmountable life seems, you always have opportunities to bounce back.

Now we've lived it bro. And I agree. 1:49 hurts like hell. It seems most of the people drawn to this video to comment have not had things go the way they wanted in life. For instance, maybe I have finally learned to stop sabotaging relationships when they are barely off the ground. Choosing never learning from your mistakes, but maybe finally breaking the cycle. Maybe they will develop a pill or something and we start living better for longer...and maybe we will. Give me back the 20 years of my adulthood that were stolen. Perhaps my youth, too. One can hope, anyway.

The look in her eyes at the very end says it all. In that moment she understood Simon and Mark's regret, shame, and self loathing. She had known about it but hadn't understood it, in that second she realised the pain they felt when they looked in the mirror and hated what stared back, why they were obsessed with the past because they couldn't cope with the train wreck of a life that was their present self, as they trudged through life eaten up by the grief they felt at the death of their youth, their hope, and their lust for life. Before life may have been shit but they had been filled with carefree optimism and passion, but life stayed shit and they turned to cynicism to stay sane. They had been crushed by that one simple reality, that life isn't fair; and they hid from that fact in the welcome arms of rose tinted nostalgia and in the warm comforting embrace of hard drugs, and when people said to them "choose life" they answered "life didn't choose me"

One of the only perfect sequels for this scene alone. A lesser filmmaker would have just mindlesslessly updated the speach to just be a gen-X shitlist raging against Kardashians and selfy culture. Instead it vears perfectly into middle aged regret that contrasts perfectly with the youthful optimism underneath the superficial nihilism of the first speach. Showing us that with age doesn't come wisdom. Just more anxiety.

We are all on here aware of the positives and negatives of social media and in this comment section I see people who are trying to make a connection and even present or former addicts trying to help each other. Social media has helped me find other people who were dealing with the same issues and so it is a tool that can be used for both good and bad. Hell, even opiates have two sides to them. They are the most amazing painkillers in the world and have given countless people in terminal illness painless deaths, and spared their families having to see their loved ones in pain. And they are also horribly addictive. The difference is severity. You are less likely to get completely sucked in, or start vomiting or sweating if it is taken away from you :P

I think of this when I see people post endless pictures of their kids on Facebook, basically forcing you to like the post or otherwise you feel bad for not doing so. Many of them are seeking affirmation of their lives this way and getting a shot of dopamine to boot, even if they don't know it.

My favourite part of this scene is Renton's laugh after Veronica impersonates Simon impersonating Connery. It sums up a major theme of this film: that the passage of time doesn't blunt or change who you are. Renton, 20 years on, loves that Simon still does the Connery voice.

The last part of this speech where hes looking at his mother as he walks into the room talking about one day piece by piece your loved ones will be gone and there will be nothing left of you to call alive or dead hits hard big time. We breeze in and out of our own lives and minds in our own homes and one day your parents are gone & ya took them for granted. This speech is one of the greatest I've ever heard along with the turn in the music after he mentions choosing a drug cooked up in someones kitchen to escape it all. I feel like I’m the first half of this, and in the entirety of the speech from the first film, he’s talking about someone else, about the rest of society, and he’s the only one who can see through the charade. Choose disappointment and choose losing the ones you love and as they fall from view, a piece of you dies with them. Until you can see that one day in the future, piece by piece, they will all be gone. And there'll be nothing left of you to call alive or dead" What's so tragic about this part of the speech is that it's true for alot of us working class Scottish folk. It really captures the depressing truth for many of us and its in stark contrast to the original 'Choose Life' speech in Trainspotting 25 years before. Mark has been caught up in the moment and let his emotions and feelings about his life run free. It always catches me off guard Anyway, it amused me at the time.

I can understand why people who weren't young adults in the mid '90s may give this scene a bunch of flack. "Choose Life" really was a late 80's anti-drug slogan, along with D.A.R.E... I remember making fun of D.A.R.E. in a similar way as Renton in the mid '90s. I was 24 when Transpotting came out. I was having a smashing time being fueled by alcohol, and drugs while being very much the arrogant, materialistic little f*ckers that we all were. This scene is about finally growing up. It's about the consequences of choices you make in your younger life, and its about getting to that certain age where you want to go back and make right what you did wrong the first go around, but you can't. I'm glad they waited 20 years to make this movie. T1 is a glimpse of life for many many of us Gen-xers in the mid 90's. T2 is a glimpse of our changed attitudes and ideas now.. I want a T3 in about 15-20 years. I want to see these characters story arcs close at that time, especially Begbie's.
@MartinTobinPham
@MartinTobinPham 7 жыл бұрын
Nailed my thoughts on the scene and desires for the future precisely. I'm surprised at some of the flack the scene/speech gets, but with something so heartfelt I guess you have to expect a divide in the audience. T3 in even 5 years, with lesser expectations and pressure, could present possibilities for a nice little story. A Begbie spinoff has already been put forward by Boyle as something more tempting, at least for the nearer future.
@kabukiwookie
@kabukiwookie 7 жыл бұрын
MTP: IMHO any T3 movie has to revolve around the four main characters, and it has to be in 15-20 years as my generation reaches our "golden years". How does Renton, Spud, Simon and Begbie deal with irrelevance in a world that values the power of youth over the kick ass of experience? I want to see Renton with grand kids wondering how he wants to end it all. I want to see Spud living a life an author while being bored. I want to see Simon having health problems because he never really quit drugs till much later.. I want to see Begbie accepting himself (according to Robert Carlyle and Danny Boyle) and I want to see all four getting together one more time for one last Oceans 11 type caper before they all fade away. And I want to see a new "choose life" speech at that time that talks about my generations interpretation on it. "Choose life" meant different things in 1996 and 2017. What will it mean in 2037? A trilogy about my generation made over a generation. I really want to see that.

This monologue speaks to me (33 years old guy), in a way that essentially says "You made your 20s, like it was fun and carefree, now you start to see clearer picture of society nowadays" which is pretty much how he describes. The use(and abuse) of Social Media, the urge to be acknowledged by the world (mostly by looks and likes) and all of that which is "poca sostanza e molta apparenza" (not much essence but lot of appearance). Now besides, very few good friends, some nice dogs and nature I feel the rest is pretty much fake, like I am living on a "Truman Show" movie.
