In this video I discuss 3 categories of fixed line rods: Seiryu, Tenkara, and Keiryu. I cover some of the similarities and differences.
Here is the link to the best information on the subject from Tenbum:

I like the phrase you used about grey lines between the types of rods. I have reduced my rod collection to five and think of them not as categorized as much as a gradient, from very small fish in very small streams to big strong fish in big strong rivers. As for wind, practice practice practice! Last winter I walked across the street to a park every time it was windy and practiced… trying different rods, lines, and casting methods. Figuring out what worked best in how much wind, and when exactly it was time to finally give up. That helped immensely because, as I’m sure you know, some wind can really stir up the fish and make them less cautious. Another nice video!

Thank you. I absolutely agree that the wind can produce some serious feeding activity. I know that from my extensive lake fishing experience, as well. It’s not the casting aspect as much as it is the drift aspect that I find frustrating. In the summer, I would simply switch techniques to negate the wind effects, but in the winter many of those tactics won’t work since you just need low and slow.

Spot on in everything you said. The HM-30R is a great rod for anyone who ever wanted to fight a tarpon in a mountain stream.

Hi Kris, wondering if you've ever tried or heard anything about the "Karasu" line of tenkara rods from "Discover Tenkara". They look great, I am considering buying one. Thanks in advance for any help, your channel is awesome 👍.

Thanks Rick. I have not tried or seen them in person before. I know many people love them. I was interested in the 360 but the couple times I went online, they were out of stock. I have read various reviews/information on them, but it seems limited.

Nice instructional video. Can you do something with why you would use certain rods for different fish or conditions?
@tenkaraonthetrail
@tenkaraonthetrail 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Rick. I have most of that information in my “choosing a rod” series: Part 1 rod characteristics, Part 2 is the situation. In general: bigger fish require higher penny ratings (stiffer rods), longer rods are better for bigger water (and bigger fish), keiryu rods are much better for weighted flies or bait with split shot and “tactical nymphing” aka euro style nymphing or tightlining, tenkara rods are best with unweighted flies.

You’re welcome. It’s a great question and there are lots of variables. I enjoy overcomplicating things:) I could just use 3 rods for 90% of my fishing, but where’s the fun in that?

How would you classify the Wasatch Rodzilla - Tenkara or Keiryu?

I live between a freshwater river and saltwater on the Olympic Peninsula. Actually, there are rivers all around. I'm considering a Wasatch Rod Co. Rodzilla to try for different species. The river closest to me has several salmon species, as well as, steelhead, and trout. The saltwater has (?) What species I couldn't say, but they are there. My wife says I have a wall full of rods, but I tell her it's a different experience. I want to make sure it's not a collecting thing, but a using thing. As I age, I'm not into dragging gear around that I won't use.

I've thought about a tenkara rod for reaching out around 20 feet with a 1/16 ounce jig for crappie beside submerged standing trees. What rod would you think would work good for this? Thanks
@tenkaraonthetrail

So do you mean you want a rod that is 20 feet long or a rod and line combination that will reach 20 feet?
@lesyoung9294
@lesyoung9294 4 ай бұрын
One that will reach 20 feet. I want to be able to stay back 15 to 20 feet & be able to sit a 1/16 ounce jig straight down beside a submerged tree that fish are suspended beside of. Thanks
@tenkaraonthetrail

Well, there aren’t too many Tenkara rods that reach 20’…you would probably be looking at a two handed Keiryu rod. Keiryu Rod company has a variety, including a few Japanese rods. They are stiffer than Tenkara rods and can handle jigs. Keiichi Okushi with Tenkara-ya can also source Japanese rods as well. I personally have Suntech Sawanabori Keiryu rods up to 24’.
