Nice video, Kris. I sold off my keiryu rods, as I didn't find them that useful on the waters I fish. But that style of fishing can be very effective when done properly.

I use a Japanese style Keiryu fishing rig on a 24' rod where my Tenjo line is 4 and 8' connected with hitch knot. This allows for easy line shortening if site conditions change. My tippet is 5' fine floating line then 4' 2 lb leader. I also have added wire clips to rod for easy storing the line. Clips attached to rod using thread like traditional rod eyes. I have caught lots of trout with this rig. Hooked on Keiryu fishing.

Excellent! I’ve read about the adjustable tenjo line but never tried it. Why the floating line? Do you use line markers at all or is the floating line visible enough?

@@tenkaraonthetrail Float line probably not necessary but added to aid in hook action. I use a traditional Keiryu float instead of markers. I know markers are used by many Tenkara converts but I like the action of a simple long stem float on western rivers and lakes. Really cool to see float tip up when fish is nibbling.

Thank you for making this video. It has inspired me to not just stick to Tenkara rods and purchase a Keiryu rod.

@@tenkaraonthetrail The Nissin Pro Spec 4 Way Keriyu. It’s a 7:3 at 6.10m with 14 sections that adjust 4 ways (6.10-5.75-5.40-5.00). There is not a lot of big open rivers here but a lot of small 10-15 foot wide rivers with plenty of plant and tree overgrowth. I’m planning on using it Lantern style as there is no way to cast a Tenkara rod in these sections.

Great video again. One question I have with using a shorter line is how do you land the fish? I notice the lantern style anglers in Japan tend to catch smaller fish which they swing through the air. I imagine that landing bigger fish with a shorter line is quite difficult?
@tenkaraonthetrail
@tenkaraonthetrail 2 жыл бұрын
Good question, I wondered about that initially as well. With only 3-4’ difference with a 20-24’ rod or 2’ with a 15’ for example, it is not a problem. There is more than enough flex to easily net the fish or hand-line if needed. I know some folks may even collapse the bottom couple rod sections but I’ve never had to do that.

@@tenkaraonthetrail Thanks! I´m going to be ordering a keiryu rod soon so I´ll give a shorter line a go in the spring...

Excellent. If I don’t use the rod for “Keiryu” fishing, I just use a normal length line as if I’m using an overgrown Tenkara rod. I actually enjoy the long rods if casting room allows it.

@@tenkaraonthetrail I agree, Chris. Actually when fishing with a short Tenno line I have sometimes collapsed the bottom section or two in order to hand line a fish or ease one into a net. I have several keijru rods that I really like for fishing mid sized rivers with bead head nymphs. Staying far away from fish is a plus. Chris Stewart has a nice discussion of the pluses of these long rods not the least of which is they are light yet have a firm backbone. .
