This episode is a dive into how to choose and use the right abrasive to get the perfect plateau on your honing work.
Lake Speed Jr heads down to ‪@cncblockworks6781‬ shop floor where he’s joined by ‪@Rottlermfg‬ Application Engineer, Scott Rowe, for a hands-on honing demonstration. The pair begin with a discussion of the application (e.g, are we doing a “grocery getter” or a “crazy diesel”?), and how the hardness of the block will impact the abrasive selection.
They talk about how the amount of fuel that flows through the engine will affect the coarseness of your stone, and why you need to look at Rzk rather than Rvk with your base hone. The guys also show how using a roughness connected to visualization software allows you to see more details about your surface finish than mere numbers can provide.
Finally, the guys show how a cylinder doesn’t wear evenly top to bottom, and how using a vertical hone and stones with more heads will deliver bother roundness and straightness consistently for every cylinder in the engine block.

nice machine, good info as always. it would of been nice to have info like this back in the 80's&90's...but we didnt. we found what appeared to work and last and did that. didnt have the diamond stones either. that's evolution and what keep us going forward. I need to see if you have done any air filter test and watch those if not please do some air filter test so we know what to run on our truck's cars, street cars&race cars etc. a good hone job & rings can go away pertty quick without a good filter. keep yp the great work&vids Lake!!

I wonder how straight the cylinder stays when it is hotter from top to bottom.

A very informative presentation, gentlemen. I hone with a Sunnen SV-10 using a head with two vitrified stones. Is there a vitrified stone that I can use for the base finish that will produce the approximate RVK numbers (application specific) as the 170-grit diamond stones you use for this demonstration? Thanks, Bill

How many hone jobs do you have to sell in order to pay that machine off???

Can that rottler machine be programmed to hone intentional taper into the bore. Or would that still have to be accomplished on a ck10 type unit.
