Just subscribed! I've watched a few of your videos and very informational. Thank You! I'm going to purchase my 1st PT Certification course in the next month or 2 from ACE when they are on sale for the Holidays. I already know I want to get more certifications they offer but probably not for another year till I dip my toes into Personal Training! Again, thank you and I'll be here when new content arrives. 🙂

Im 17 and will be moving to Vancouver, Canada in a couple of months. I am looking forward to getting certified by NASM and start training clients at a big box gym. Do you think that the clients would trust an 18-year-old as their trainer?

Wow what a great question. And a great opportunity for you. I'll just give you my honest opinion, but at the end of the day, you just gotta trust your gut and not give a fuck what other people say. Will clients have difficulty trusting an 18-year old PT? I'm going to say yes. But, that doesn't mean that you should not do it. What it means is, you'll have to work harder than other PTs. I started PT at 22 at Goodlife Fitness Rideau Center (Ottawa). The gym is a stone's throw away from Ottawa U. Most of my clients were students, grad students, or downtown types who were hip with a younger crowd. I didn't have much in terms of PT experience, but I was in really good shape, I had confidence, and I could sell. I worked out 2x/day at the gym in the beginning so I could be seen by members often, and I hired my own PT to train and coach me who was the top PT at the gym. I took up guidance from all the other trainers because I was the youngest on staff. Did I ever have anyone comment on my age? No. Why? Because I didn't act like a typical 22 year old. So while age is just a number, it's going to come down to you. Your attitude, your personality, your charm and charisma, your willingness to learn and be the best, etc. You can be great at 18/19, and you can be terrible. To the flip side, you can be terrible at 35 too. My suggestion would be to work in a busy gym at the front desk first. Do admin, meet and greets, membership sales, etc. Do that for 12 months. In that time, skill up. Get NASM certified, and do a few other courses. Build your body. Build your socials. Build your presence. Get experience from other PTs by hiring them for 1-3 sessions. Learn from the veteran members at the gym. 18 is young, especially today. Most 18 year olds have no idea how to even have a conversation with someone and how to look people in the eyes and not have their phone in their hand. Don't be that type. Mentor at a gym for 1 year. You're young, so it's okay to be broke and to not live in a fancy place right now. Learn as much as you can from now until 25. But trust your gut always. Hope this helps. At the end of the day, it's my opinion. I wish you success.

Hi Anmol, if you live in Canada then yes Can Fit Pro is a good basic PT certification. As I said in the video, the issue may come should you want to move to another country. Some insurance companies may or may not recognize it. But for Canada - yes it is fine.

Never heard of them. Honestly, as long as you can get insurance and get hired, it really doesn't matter. As a trainer, your results for your clients, those are the real credentials.

Hey Dave. Do you know about internships like the ones life time and exos provide to students? or personal training/ strength and conditioning internships in general.
@DaveMacLeanPT
@DaveMacLeanPT 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Ari, no I am not familiar with either of those internships. I do however think that internships would be a great way for new trainers to accelerate the learning curve and gain real-life experience fast. I hired a personal trainer when I started out and it was totally the best thing I could have done to go from a novice trainer to a skilled, intermediate trainer over the 6 months I worked with him. So I can imagine if these internships you’ve mentioned are backed by solid, career trainers, then they may be a great option. One of my biggest influences in fitness, the late Charles Poliquin, had a saying: “the more you learn, the more you earn.” Cheers - Dave

I live in BC, any reason to become a BCRPA Certified Personal Trainer vs ACE and others? I don't plan to work in community centers.
@DaveMacLeanPT
@DaveMacLeanPT 3 жыл бұрын
No reason to certify with BCRPA. In fact, I strongly recommend not doing it. All of the local, provincial certs are not recognized nationally or internationally. In most cases, they cost the same, or more, than the big certifications. Usually, their recertification process is tighter as well. I am in a situation currently where I have been certified since 2009 with Can Fit Pro, but seeing as how I am in a different country now, I may need to re-certify with a new organization entirely, as Can Fit Pro is not recognized here. I would just go with NASM or ISSA. They are recognized everywhere, and you can do a payment plan and get started right now.
@Hitmanjat
@Hitmanjat 3 жыл бұрын
@@DaveMacLeanPT Thanks Dave. I started the BCRPA program already thinking I would complete it and then write the Ace exam, as I don’t plan to leave Canada. I kinda wish I had just gone with the ACE certification from the get go. In my experience the BCRPA certification is more costly and redundant. Thanks and keep up the great videos

You can always upgrade on your certs. No stress. Get certified ASAP. Get interviewing ASAP. Get making $$ and training cliets ASAP. Join the private FB group I have for trainers "PT Nation". @@DaveMacLeanPT hallo dave. With a pt Certification from american clubs like nasm, Ace etc do you have the concession to start a bussiness? Like a small gym or a box?
@DaveMacLeanPT
@DaveMacLeanPT 3 жыл бұрын
@@georgekalokardis7577 yes. You will just need to pay a higher amount for liability insurance as you will need $5M coverage. You will also need to have equipment such as AED device, first aid kits, fire extinguishers, etc. on hand at that facility to obtain the higher liability coverage.

@DaveMacLeanPT
@DaveMacLeanPT 3 жыл бұрын
Trust your gut. It's one of my five principles for trainers. Don't second guess yourself or rethink anything. If you want to become a trainer and get certified - do it. As for ISSA, I have a very good friend who is a trainer back in Vancouver, BC, certified PT with ISSA, charges $150/session. ISSA, NASM, and ACE are all excellent choices for trainers to get started without a degree, and get interviewing for jobs, training clients, and earning income relatively quick. NSCA is great too, will take a little longer, and is more for trainers who aim to have a specific background with strength and conditioning training. Don't overthink it. Just get certified. Cheers - Dave

Do these certification programs teach you how to sell personal training?
@DaveMacLeanPT
@DaveMacLeanPT 2 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately most do not cover sales in detail. Some good resources I can recommend are: - NASM business accelerator course - Bedros Keuilian's 'Close Clients' course, and - Mark Ottobre's 'Sales Mastery for PTs' - which I believe is now branded as Enterprise Fitness Academy. If I could recommend one, it would be Mark Ottobre's course. Cheers.
