Great explanation. I got setup with a 6.8:1 7’-0” medium fast action rod for my first baitcaster. Seems like my local tackle shop did a great job setting me up with versatile middle range, do all gear.

Thanks! Always thought that gear ratio was complicated and never gave it a thought. I was dead wrong. Simple stuff 🎣🇺🇸

Thanks! I am new to baitcasting and always told the lower gear is better for new people, but I believe mid 7.1:1 is a better all around like you advised. Thank you for helping me choose what I needed.

Thank you If you are a beginner baitcaster and plan to use a light rig would the slower 6 be the way to go for fewer bird nesting?

How about for salmon fishing? What is the best gear ration that you can use for casting and float fishing?
@BassGeek6 жыл бұрын
I would consider a 5 to be a low speed.
@SonarFishing6 жыл бұрын
It certainly is a low speed. I used to go as low as a gear ration in the 5 range, but I have found the a 6 is a much better option for bass fishing on the lower end of the ratio spectrum. A 5 can be difficult to catch up with fish when you need to, which is one reason I have replaced them with the slightly higher 6 range. However, if you are comfortable with a 5, I certainly wouldnt change it.

About the only thing I use it for is the deep divers. I would call 6 a medium.

I found my first bait caster in my dads shed. He gave it to me and I have no idea how to use it. I tried to cast it the first time and the line messed all up and had to cut all the line off it. I don't know if yall made a video about how to use them or not. Please let me know were to look thank you.

First time I ever tried a baitcaster I had the same problem.... what worked for me at first was to crank the magnetic brake and adjust the spool tension to where the bait or practice plug dropped slooooooow when the spool was released. After time you will find the sweet spot. If it backlashes at the beginning of the cast the spool tension is too loose, and if it backlashes at the end of the cast the magnetic brakes are too loose. At least that's how it was for me. You will learn how to use your thumb over time. In the meantime.... buy cheap line just in case you have to cut it all off. Lol. 12# Zebco Omniflex is dirt cheap at Walmart.

I'm still pretty new to bait casters and bass fishing in general.... what ratio is good for say a Zoom Horny Toad, spinner bait, or flipping jig? I've got a 5:1, a 6.1:1, and a 7.0:1.
@Servprolafayettein6 жыл бұрын
DaddyO's Ink the 6 or the 7
@jackbrick29676 жыл бұрын
Definitely 7 . It’s the most versatile gear ratio. Fast reeling in slack or for some slower retrieves for spinner baits you can just slow down your reel.
@SonarFishing6 жыл бұрын
For all of those presentations I would personally only use a 7.0:1 or higher. The spinnerbait may be the only exception IF I am trying to slow roll it. However, for most spinnerbait fishing 7.0:1 is perfect.
@SonarFishing6 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't go higher than a 7.6:1 on the spinnerbait though.
@daddyosink44136 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the input folks! What applications would the 5:1 and 6.1:1 be good for? I know that there are vids on YT explaining this... but I'd rather hear from the "every man" who isn't sponsored by any company and has money to burn. Also.... any rod action recommendations? I dont like using anything over 6'6" because they won't fit in the back of my truck and I HATE 2 piece rods.... they just dont have the "feel" of a 1 piece rod blank. I'm honestly used to using Zebcos and old Lew's Speed Spins, so I have no problem "burning" a bait. Again, thanks for the input guys!

If you're going to talk gear ratios you need to put perspective in there. So a 9:1 gear ratio will bring in apx 3 feet of line per handle turn whereas a 5:1 gear ratio will bring in less than 2 feet per turn of the handle. A 9 speed will bring in apx 30 feet of line for 10 full handle cranks compared to about 21 feet of line for a 5 speed reel.

Picking up 2 5:6.1 ratios anyone else use them? Lowest I’ve ever gone. Usually fishing with 8:2.1

Anyone watching this video he forgot to mention all those GEAR RATIOS are meant for bass/sport fishing fishing! Heaviest fish 5-7lbs. These are very high ratios for Massive Pike or Muskie! Go low ratios for heavy fish and heavy baits! Such a bad video of saying what ratio is right, what are you fishing for and what size are your baits! That's what depicts gear ratio!
