Great video l! I’ve been unwittingly causing rotator cuff issues due to using the wrong mouse for the last 12 months. I thought it was something I was doing at the gym - but lo and behold when I realised I was putting my shoulder into an awful hunched position using a so called ergonomic mouse, the penny dropped. Just bought a vertical mouse instead and looking forward to getting my shoulder back to health again! Keep up your great videos.

Good video! I initially got the Lift and it was indeed very small and I had to drag my little finger across the surface which was annoying. The vertical, older, but perfect, I can use it with my pinky holding the mouse.

Great video as always and good advice. I have been struggling with neck-/shoulder and occasional hand pain for a while and I do prefer a vertical mouse, too. But I have noticed that switching devices can be good as well (one day mouse, one day trackball, one day trackpad) and even using the left hand every now and then. Apple's Magic Trackpad is good for it. The only downside: I don't have a good angle.

I tried pretty much hall options and, for me, the "in-between" a regular mouse and a vertical mouse manages to be the most comfortable and versatile, as either vertical or regular formats become too extreme in different aspects (different areas of wrist and arm get different stress and pain with prolongued use). The Logitech MX Master 2S and 3S have been my go to choices, and although expensive, they're noticeably better than the cheaper replicas.

A potential issue to consider with vertical mice is that your left click index finger often has to be held up radially to be positioned correctly. So you can end up holding tension to keep your finger above the scroll wheel on the left click. This probably depends on your hand size. Also, clicking requires a resistant squeeze from your thumb to keep the mouse stable, so if you have thumb problems, a vertical mouse could aggravate that repetitively.

My poor man approach. Get a 5$ small ambidexterous Mouse, i.e. oklick 245m or Lenovo 400. Put it on a surface with your left Hand and then free it without Lifting your palm. Rotate your left palm counter clockweise until it will stuble about surface and then Grab the Mouse again but only with Tips of your Fingers. Adjust Mouse Speed and acceleration in OS to move cursor confortably Just with Fingers. Enjoy.

Hi Olivier, thanks for the video, but do you have a budget friendly recommendation?

Thank you for this amazing video! I just have one question: you rightly said that a wrist rest is not needed for a vertical mouse, but does it make sense for a traditional mouse? And above all, do traditional mice that boast of having ergonomic shapes for a more natural grip (but which are not vertical, like the Mx Master 3S) make sense, or are they marketing gimmicks?
@OlivierGirard
@OlivierGirard 8 ай бұрын
You're welcome! 2 good questions... - reg. the wrist rest, here is my opinion: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hYW2ppugpbh_fsk - reg. ergonomic shapes, they can make sense indeed in the sense that they MIGHT reduce the muscle strain in the hand. But the more fancy shape you have, the greater the risk that some dimension doesn't fit you. So I would say: either you'll love it or you'll hate it, there won't be an inbetween :)

@@OlivierGirard Thank you. I watched the video you pointed me to, I have one last question: I saw that there are wrist rests for mice that glide with you, I was convinced it was simply a marketing gimmick, but based on what I understand, I think they might make sense for a horizontal mouse considering that we care about avoiding horizontal and vertical wrist movements.

I believed they were great too… but this I tried weren’t attached to the mouse so they were never at the right place when reaching for the mouse. If they are attached to it maybe it’s a different thing… just never found those 😄

I have used an MX Ergo for the past 5 years. I have always used in the tilted position. Is a wrist rest recommended? Sometimes, I use it.

I am having trouble knowing how to move a vertical mouse. Currently, I feel pain in the lower part that is in contact with the table, a little above the wrist. Does the hand need to drag to move a vertical mouse, or should we keep it out of contact with the table?
@OlivierGirard
@OlivierGirard 13 күн бұрын
In theory the load should be spread between the wrist, elbow and shoulder joints, i.e. the hand should glide. But for small movements it won't, in practice. Plus, the extent of the joints movement will depend on the friction of the surface on which you glide the mouse: the more it creates friction, the more you will tend to rest the hand and just use the wrist.

Hello Olivier, Just a quick video suggestion that could talk about overweight/obese people and specifically if lumbar support is harder to get right or not for them! Love your content, best regards!
@OlivierGirard
@OlivierGirard 6 ай бұрын
Hey dear! Indeed, lumbar support can be an issue for overweight/obese people: it needs to be higher, and most chairs don't offer this. Kinnarps chairs offer this feature but for many others it's a real problem...

Olivier thank you for such a great review, One thing about trackballs, it takes some time and practice to become efficient with it. But it is possible in 2 - 3 weeks. Also it is important to have mouse acceleration on set in the mouse settings so that you can move quick from one corner to another, and slow when you need more precisions.

I think that for small hands, it's definitely worth a try. But for normal to big hands, go for MX Vertical
