As technology gets smaller and more powerful, wearables and portable devices are becoming more common in our everyday lives. Makers are looking to make projects portable and with that comes the need for high capacity batteries that are reliable, powerful, and compact. The clear choice for most projects is a Lithium Polymer (also known as Lithium-ion Polymer) battery (LiPo for short).
If you haven’t already checked them out, be sure to take a look at our tutorials on using PowerBoost Modules with LiPo Batteries, and Tips for Using LiPo Batteries. They cover off on same basic safety tips and best practices when using LiPo batteries, but today we’ll be looking at what differentiates different LiPo batteries, and how to choose the best one for your project.

I bought some earbud batteries about 10mm x 10mm wide. I figured out how to house them in epoxy resin by putting them in 20mm earing boxes with small holes for the wires where the box lid is exposed so the battery can still be replaced when the rest of the circuit is encapsulated in epoxy resin. The new Type-C charge controllers I got are nice the cords are easy to snap in.

Super useful. I am a little nervous about using LI-Po in my project with the 3V minimum etc. Do i need a battery controller as well to make sure my project doesn't suck too much juice?

This is true PMS (power managment system) or BMS (battery managment systems) are important for the longevity of a LiPo battery in a project. Otherwise as you state your project can suck all the juice out the the LiPo leaving it damaged. If you want to learn more come ask some questions here at our forum - forum.core-electronics.com.au/

I am using DELL latitude e6530 it uses cylindrical battery cells of 5000 mah i want to upgrade it to use 20,000mah lithium cell batteries (like the one used in powerbanks) Is it advisable for me to take this approach?

Modifying a pre-built battery like that is often not advisable. There are often very specific charging circuitry designed for the battery and it may be a fire risk to replace them.

Hi Sam, as flat Li-Po batteries are folded and packed. Is it possible to use them after DIY un-folding and re-packaging it?

Making a small toy car with LiPo, how do I make sure that I do not discharge the battery too much? Should I build in a LiPo alert/tester? -or maybe they are not meant to be connected permanently!?

What battery is better for powerbank. Li-ion or Li-po.

Depends on the form factor you're looking for. If you don't mind going with a bigger battery, go with 18650s, because they have a pretty high capacity

I was hoping you could help me out on decoding the different letters on a 3.7V 300mAh LiPo Li-Polymer Battery. After an extensive search online I came up empty. I have seen FP, HYP, XJDZ, PZY, LP, etc. on 602030 batteries and have no idea what they relate to. I need professional help! lol

If you were talking about the 3.7V 300mAh bit, I can explain, the FP, HYP stuff no idea. 3.7V is the difference in the electric current, while 300mAh is the unit of current. Ah stand for ampere. The two number given can be mutiplyed together to find the power the battry out put. W = 3.7 * 0.3 W = 1.11 Watt Power is defined as energy per second. So what it is telling you is that it output 1.11 joules of energy every second.

Thanks for the reply, it seems these letters are a mystery everywhere I looked. The most feasible answer I found was manufacturing codes. It would be great if you know definitively what connector was used on each battery when ordering. They are used in a lot of different applications.

What actually dictates the C rating then? Comparing two lipo cells aren’t they going to have the same c rating? And a lipo battery what dictates their c ratings? The method used to construct the battery?
