How chop suey got its name: The song was originally titled "Suicide" but Columbia Records forced the band to change it to avoid controversy. The song title is therefore a wordplay, with "self-righteous suicide" replaced by "self-right-chop suey-cide" in order to avoid provocation by using absurdity.

"Rick Rubin, who produced Toxicity for System of a Down, cites this song as one of his most important projects. He told Rolling Stone: "This song was originally going to be called “Self-Righteous Suicide,” and the record company rebelled. …I remember wanting to go to the mat and keep the title, and the band decided, “Let’s call it ‘Chop Suey!’” which I thought was kind of funny. " Chop-suey is the Americanization of the Chinese quick dish tsap sui, which means “odds and ends, mixed bits” in the Cantonese dialect. The song title is a play on “Self-right-Chop Suey-cide,” that has a further sort of humor in that they mixed up a controversial word into a nonsensical word to create a more ‘radio-friendly’ title." - Genius Lyrics

To respond to the description, the song is called "Chop Suey" because it's a play on words. "Self righ *TIOUS SUI* cide" or "Self-righ-CHOP-SUEY-cide." According to a Genius contributor, the band was forced to rename the song from simply "Suicide" to something more appropriate. That's why you hear in the beginning of the original song "We're rolling Suicide", because that's what the project was originally called.

i don't think tious and chop sound similar at all, even if you try. I think its more of a tongue in cheek reference to how the simply "chopped" (or cut) the original title at the management's request. chop sui. It also works well because the dish is not homogeneous -- bunch of ingredients thrown together in soup; much like the song with its melodious and screaming, loud and soft parts.
@editsbyshock6 жыл бұрын
One True Morty Several sources indicate the band wanted to replace provocation with absurdity in attempt to make the song name more radio friendly. They achieved this through wordplay. I'd link you sources myself, but I'm fairly certain KZbin would mark the comment as spam. Google "Chop Suey song name" and those sources should appear.

Rick Rubin, who produced Toxicity for System of a Down, cites this song as one of his most important projects. He told Rolling Stone: This song was originally going to be called “Self-Righteous Suicide,” and the record company rebelled. …I remember wanting to go to the mat and keep the title, and the band decided, “Let’s call it ‘Chop Suey!’” which I thought was kind of funny. Chop-suey is the Americanization of the Chinese quick dish tsap sui, which means “odds and ends, mixed bits” in the Cantonese dialect. The song title is a play on “Self-right-Chop Suey-cide,” that has a further sort of humor in that they mixed up a controversial word into a nonsensical word to create a more ‘radio-friendly’ title.

The original already sounds like a donkey being butchered, can't imagine the agony when crossed with the vocal from this chop suey cover. listen to the vocals in the original they are freaking amazing the guy sounds completely nuts or out of his mind angry, with brief intermittent moments of tranquility it's a masterpiece! While both this version and cranbarrie's zombie is something to be played repetitively as a form of torture.

Chop Suey is a dish with mixed vegetables. The song Chop Suey is an eclectic mix of song styles; pop (guitar opening), Christian rock (Father, into your hands I commend my spirit), hip hop (rap musing on first verses), Armenian music, and rock (everything else). At least I believe it is.
@lostsurferjames56 жыл бұрын
A.S. Sanchez sorry but incorrect. The original song title was "suicide" but the record label wouldn't allow it. So they "chopped" Suicide into Suey. The lyrics reflect the original title. But to your credit SOAD is one of the few "alternative metal" bands out there for their mixture and genre bending sounds.
@magwaaf6 жыл бұрын
its a mix of leftover lyrics and stuff from unfinished songs and its called chop suey because chop suey is originally just a bunch of leftovers thrown into a wok and mixed up together
@bradyconnor6486 жыл бұрын
@@magwaaf no, they called it that so the radio stations would play it. If it had suicide in the title like they had originally intended to the radio would never play it. The song itself is about someone that is planning to commit suicide bc of a stuff addiction. At the beginning of the song serj says "we're rolling suicide" I do give respect for the way you put it. It would make sense but that's just not what they were going for

Replying to the question in the video description: Apparently the original song title was "Suicide". In the album version, you can actually hear Serj Tankian, the lead singer, saying "Rolling suicide", before the song starts, relating to it's original title. They later changed it to Chop Suey because of this title's resemblance to the verse "Self-righteous suicide" (self-rightCHOP SUEYcide). Glad I could help.
@TheGreatPanda23116 жыл бұрын
I heard that they actually made the song shorter (chopped it) and someone in the studio joked that they threw away the chopped -cide part of the Suicide. So just the Sui left. So Chopped Sui became Chop Suey
