I like how you made the song very jazzy. I have a friend who’s been complaining about how people don’t really cover System of a Down’s songs right and how the originals are always miles better and I see where she’s coming from - it’s a completely different style to the original. It’s really an acquired taste: she’s been listening to hard rock and metal for so long that when you adapt the song so much, she doesn’t think you’re doing it justice because Jazz really isn’t her style, whilst I really like and can appreciate both.
You guys go so hard on those SOAD chorus verses! Not just this one. People use to call their lyrics nonsense, but you give them a solid meaning.

I'm not sure I'm in love with the arrangement, but It's great that people are doing covers like this ✌
@cgtaurus5 жыл бұрын
Agree, It is sucking too much of the dirt and grit out the song. Robyn voice is sweet and a mid alto. The arrangement is works against and not with the lead singstress. A little more creativity needed on the keyboard and the low end base line needs more stuccato snd comes in at the wrong times, also distracting from the rawness of the lyrical melody. Also, I say with admiration of her professional vocal ability, Robyn Adele is giving a too perfect of a vocal performance, that takes the needed tension for a heavy metal bop like Toxicity. If the pead would just let her voice shred off pitch a tad more, it would take this version to another level. I'm a music nerd so this is just my two cents. It was still an enjoyable performance though.

@TheoneandonlyDrops6 жыл бұрын
I don't think most songs have ONE single meaning that is the only true interpretation for that song. Daron did say it was about ADD, but there's a LOT of arguments one could make for the song being about -consumerism, corporate control and apathy conversion software version 7.0: this line could be a reference to AOL 7.0, an update in 2001 (when the song was released) and how everyone was more or less forced to switch to a new software. Looking at life through the eyes of a tire hub, seems to imply a narrow viewpoint that you have no control over. A viewpoint that is also always spinning thus implying chaos. Between the sacred silence and sleep: the people are either not aware about this (asleep) or simply silent about it (which for this system is the same). -ADD The seeds being eating could be metaphorical for for needing to take the medication and the tire hub line might (again) imply a chaotic viewpoint which people with ADD have no control over. Toxicity could refer to the actual toxicity of meds and also their side effects. The disorder here would stand for, well disorder, disorder one feels without the medication. -Armenia This one imho is the most prominent theme and the one that band probably had in mind as well. 2001 L.A. You have the largest Armenian Community outside of Armenia, a country that at the time had just recently become a democratic one and was still facing many hardships. High unemployment, corruption and strong criminal elements for one. Many came to America to find a new life only to discover more of the same there as well. Eating sunflower seeds apparently actually was (or is?) a past-time activity in Armenia. People without a job would just stand around and eat sunflower seeds. The band also has strong Armenian Roots. Personally I think the song is about all of these themes to some degree. However one thing the song is almost certainly NOT about is Beirut. Beirut was a popular tourist destination until 2005. The only thing really out of the ordinary in 2001was that they hosted the 'Miss Europa Pageant'.

Picture this: You are sitting on a stool drinking a glass of scotch, while listening to this song. Nothing new, same old faces with the same old stories. Once in a while a little piece of light enters the dark crowed bar... However and sudden (at 2:34)the door opens and let a bunch of city air enters the place, a big shadow is behind the cutted smoke, no one seems to notice or really no one wants to. It starts walking fast towards you. Makes you signs for you to go with it, it looks dangerous, but what the hell, you have noting to lose. And that's where the real story starts. A big car with black windows, a cigarrette with red lipstick throws the ashes to your feet and she dressed with a fine coat gives you a kiss. Tell you she's sorry for putting you in danger, with tears on her cheeks. You don't know her, you don't repair. A strange voice screams your name and then: a hit, a bag, a silence and the black. Your body lies at the end of the river on a city with industrial waste... the Toxic City Where you have never ever been welcomed

It's like how a love for your outer surroundings finally became a dissapointment, and the love is finally meeting the dissapointment forming a placid acquaintance. Separating the feelings of love and dissapointment, no matter what positivity there is, the positivity is only there because the person is finally seeing that people are recognizing their dissapointment. As the person knows that love in society as a whole is corrupt, and there could be no way to recreate such peace and harmony. So they question society, "how do you own, such a self-owned attribute, such as disorder?" It also reminds you how words should be spoken with love and compassion, instead of something so harsh and dirty, because then the thing that used to be so beautiful can become something so horrifying based off ones own actions..
