Easily one of Chopin's greatest works. That final little solo melody at the end is one of the most beautiful moments in music, and the journey this piece takes one on is amazing. No fantasy comes close, even those involving Jessica Alba.

I love including the historical context. It gives the music a setting, possible motives while teaching history. It also underlines the fact that everything was new, much controversial, when it first came on the scene.

Listen from Cziffra. ... I am a professional classical music performer. In my opinion ( that is just my opinion-- I know) , Cziffra is the ultimate highest... We can go phrase by phrase, and I will tell you, why Cziffra is far the best of all others. Of course, you will have to be a professional classical musician to be able to andurstand the difference.

Great commentary on this piece Valentina! Thank you especially for the historical information in the bottom half. My parents bought me a record of Chopin's life and that is when I fell in love with his music and there was some narrative about his life, but not as much information as you put that explains what was going on then and influenced his music. Thank you.

Love her commentary on Chopin, the time, Polish nationalism, the drawing room context of his performances. Love her playing, no overly dramatic rubato, just skill and emotion! Awesome!

Dramatic rubato makes it better. ( not overly). Talent is more brave. Otherwise just like all others. Afraid to be brave. Perhaps because they don't really feel the real drama if mucis.

This commentary is spellbinding--I have just recently read about the Polish uprising--the world is ignorant of so much history, myself included. The context is not only of paramount importance in understanding the music, but the perception of Chopin is completely altered, forever, in one's mind. This is an epiphany of monumental musical proportions. We have you to thank, and so much more to look forward to in your works and your words, which are a bridge across the centuries.

It's actually really nice to have a feel for the pedals. Plus, everyone practices barefoot, so perhaps it should become the norm for performance as well.

Everyone practices barefoot? I have to disagree. She is the first one i see playing barefoot :p
@emlmm888 жыл бұрын
_I_ practice barefoot, and unless you're one of those people who wears their shoes inside their own house (and let's be honest, can they really be classified as _people_?), it's far too inconvenient to put shoes or socks on before having a go at the daily piano routine. I remember playing barefoot when I was four years old, and the pick-up-and-play quality of the piano made it very accessible to me. Indeed, if I'd had to put shoes on every single time I wanted to practice the instrument or compose, I doubt I'd still be playing today. Come to think of it, I can't think of a single pianist friend of mine who doesn't practice barefoot. So there, myehhh!

Some corrections to my last post here: I named "Fanny" as Chopin's sister, but in fact her name was Isabella...Fanny was Mendelssohn's sister. Sorry. There is also some evidence that it wasn't TB but CF that killed him, and 2 of his 3 sisters also suffered the same disease. One more point...one account says that Fredrick died in the arms of Isabella, who came to Paris to be with him at his death. My opinion, is that Chopin's Fantasy in F minor is superior in structure and content to Liszt's Funerailles. Not to say that Liszt wasn't one of the world's greatest composers. Just my opinion.

I am recently learning Liszt's Funerailles and reading what you wrote in the description box inspired me, it is very hard to play this piece and at the same time detach yourself from the history behind it. In this case Liszt's dedication to his countryman that perished during the revolution or as other suggest a dedication to his friend Chopin since he wrote October 1849 on the original manuscript. I guess I will think about Chopin while playing this the Funerailles :)

Hi MIke Karren--I appreciate your attempt at historical accuracy. I think that you still might have your sisters mixed up. It was his older sister Ludwicka who was with him when he died and was able to smuggle his heart back into Poland. The issue of TB or CF is unresolved--I'd be surprised that someone with CF in those days would have been able to live so long! Perhaps it sounds catty to say it, but Liszt had the advantage of living longer than most of his contemporaries, so he was able to draw on the genius of others in his later compositions. It's true of Haydn, too--some of his greatest.works were written after Mozart passed away.
