In the 13th measure of the third part (6:03) there is a g flat note in the left hand, and at that time the left hand is holding three keys from the measure 12th. So why is this note there? Is it maybe meant to be played with the right hand?

This may be a dumb question but why is there a natural and sharp sign on the same note? For example, the 4th measure of the first page.
@janepianotutorials4 жыл бұрын
Good question. The natural is unnecessary, it acts as a reminder to undo the double sharp in the previous measure, and resume the one sharp. Accidentals apply only to the measure they are in. This editor makes it clear. It makes me wonder whether I would have goofed if the natural and sharp signs weren’t there!

+Jane My comment was not really a critique or criticism of the presentation, but rather a general statement about the music itself, it's really an innocuous comment independent of your tutorial. And while I considered writing a long statement about the importance of tempo, I ultimately decided it wasn't necessary as nobody needs to know the thoughts of a failed pianist when it comes to Chopin. All I was trying to say is that the speed this piece is played at makes a big difference in the way it sounds, in our perception of it, and our appreciation of it.

Hi Jane: How do you measure the level of a piece? it is because i saw the video of beethoven sonata op 2 no 1 and for some reason i can't believe that the sonata is level 5 and this piece is 6 .-. jaja i already know how to play both of the pieces that's why i am arguing jeje the sonata took me more or less a month and the waltz just a week, so there is my doubt.
@janepianotutorials7 жыл бұрын
My levels are estimates, based on how easy or difficult it was for me to sight-read the piece to make the tutorial. There is a rule: If you can sight-read through the piece without too much difficulty, then it is the right level for you. Sounds as if you are doing well !

Damn you are just amazing! You inspire me to start learning to sight-read. But you make all these good tutorials so I always spent the time to learn the piece rather than to finally start taking your course. Such an inspiration, I wish I had somebody like you in my life when I was young to inspire me to start learning the piano for real.... Quick question: how about pedal use in this piece during the fast passage? short? on and off? or your rule, use it but don't overpedal? Obviously I cannot interpret the symbols in the sheet :S Thanks again. When I have finished Nocturne Op 9, no 2 from your site I will start with this, so much you provide the world. Very appreciated!
@janepianotutorials7 жыл бұрын
Your comment got sent to spam because of the starting word :) There must be scores on imslp that have pedal markings (P...*), look under the bass staff. Use the View option so you don't have to download the score until you find the right one. Know you do not read the score yet, but you can compare the pictures on my tutorial. You do realize the score is a picture of the piano standing sideways, right? If comparing pictures is too complicated, just use your ears. Will copy and paste how I answered this question before: Experiment holding different time lengths. The purpose is to make the sound pleasing. Holding the pedal too long causes "muddiness", that would sound annoying. Under-pedaling is preferable to over-pedaling. Key is to listen. We can press the pedal before, with, or after playing the beginning note. Listen for the different effects. Sometimes we gently "pump" the pedal -- depressed a little -- quick up and down successive movements when the passage needs pedaling but too noisy if held down.

Appears you, and many talented, are excellent pianists without knowing how to read music. Perhaps it is not necessary (or impossible?) for those of you who play by ear. The latter I fail at, even after trying. Left vs. right brain difference? That would rid of our sense of failure. Should be a fascinating topic for researchers.

Experiment holding different time lengths. The purpose is to make the sound pleasing. Holding the pedal too long causes "muddiness", that would sound annoying. Under-pedaling is preferable to over-pedaling. Key is to listen. Some classical books include pedaling in their editions. Especially Chopin Waltzes. By following those, we can pick up various pointers. Check imslp.org. Go down the list of editions ('view') and choose ones with pedaling marks.
