As someone who listen religiously to Trifonov's interpretation of this piece and thought that no interpretation could possibly top it, Bruce Liu come along and did the improbable. This piece is probably the most difficult piece in all Chopin's repertoire, and Bruce doesn't simply just go through the notes and show only the virtuosity side. He made it sing. All the nuances and details in his playing really shine through. Every little rubato and staccato is so meaningful and well thought out yet it felt so fresh and spontaneous. Also look at how much fun he had painting this music. Bravissimo! It's the least I could say.

This guy is just so beautiful. What playing. Heart, soul, touch, expression --everything. We lost the greats of the 20th Century by the late 90's: Gilels, Arrau, Bolet, Watts, De lLarrocha, Horowitz, Rubenstein, Richter. I got to see many of them in concert. So as an older person, seeing the great new pianists in their 20s and 30s who are not just technicians but are deeply musical is thrilling.

'/.../ it is evident that personality is an absolute essential for any real interpretation. When Bruce Xiaoyu Liu plays to us the Variations of Chopin on "Là ci darem la mano" from Mozart's "Don Giovanni", he gives us not merely Chopin, but also himself, and so gives us Chopin absolutely - Chopin re-interpreted through a rich artistic nature, and made vivid and wonderful to us by a new and intense personality. /.../', a paraphrased quote from Oscar Wilde's essay "The Critic as Artist". @@Thiago-px9ev Yeah, also as you know, this is a accumulative thing. You need to do the best from the rest in each stage with each different piece. In another jury interview (I think it was Janusz Olejniczak), he said Bruce got his attention in the first round but he wanted to see the other rounds because there are many challenging pieces but he nailed each stage so it was given that he won. That jury even said that this might be the biggest win since Argerich. Of course, all of them said that he has a long and challenging way to go, he is only 24 after all… there are more interviews in that website, including Dang Thai Son, I highly suggest to take a look even if it is through google translate.

I have never heard this sonata played so clearly, so well-balanced, so expressively. The left hand is a real companion to the right hand, not just an accompaniment. He is such a complete pianist at a young age. I am deeply impressed. Greetings from Germany

I love the recording by Claudio Arrau WITH orchestra! it gives more sense. However, Bruce Liu plays so that I find myself in lack of words. What a gift for our generation to have such a wonderful musician? Claudio Arrau León (Spanish pronunciation: [ˈklau̯ðjo aˈrau̯]; February 6, 1903 - June 9, 1991) was a Chilean pianist known for his interpretations of a vast repertoire spanning the baroque to 20th-century composers, especially Bach, Beethoven, Schubert, Chopin, Schumann, Liszt and Brahms.

Powiedziałem sobie: On wygra Konkurs... Jakże wielką radość sprawił mi werdykt Jury. Tak! Pan Bruce Liu wygrał 18 Konkurs Chopinowski, a moim zdaniem wygrał go właśnie niezwykłym wykonaniem Wariacji op. 2. Cytuję teraz komentarz Schumanna o chopinowskich Wariacjach, i odnoszę go do pana Bruce'a Liu: "Czapki z głów, panowie, to geniusz".
