You bring back memories for sure. I spent at least 5 summers on my Aunt and Uncles small dairy farm I loved every mi ute of the time spent there. I would either take the bus or get a ride there as soon as school was out. I would stay until school started again. The problem was school started to soon and I missed silo filling. We combined oats around the end of July and put up a lot hay and straw. I really appreciate your videos, I miss the farm but it wasn't possible. Retired and enjoy your videos 9:08

Watched your video of making pile by the barn and it reminded me of a story from an old coworker. He bought a brand new Kewanee 500 elevator in the mid 70's. Before he even used it himself his friend asked to borrow it. They had it a week and used it to fill a fairly large bunker of corn silage. They had it over a week. When they returned it they had already removed 3 links of chain because it had worn that much unloading the silage. He said he almost cried.

We have a dairy In Utah. We pride ourselves on an extremely detailed preventative maintenance program. We understand how important it is. You guys do as well. I’m really impressed how you do an excellent job with the little things. You have a lot less operators than we do. I might be a bit envious….Thank you for the nice videos. We used to dairy in Connecticut then moved out west to dairy. You have a nice operation.

I'm curious as to why you don't build a bunk silo in the hill across from the 22:28 barn? Cut it out and pour concrete walls and floor. Maybe it's farther away than it looks in the videos. Love watching you guys . It's as close to farming as I get now days.

I know concrete bunkers are expensive, but there's a lot less waste and much safer. . I don't see many open pits or clamps as we call the pile here . The all here two walls so you can still drive up and over jus a bit safer . Thanks for always going to great lengths to show us your way of doing things. To each his own.

I saw something being done at another farm. To make a stable bunk for silage, they line round bales up along the sides to stabilize it. Stack the bales as height for walls is needed. Something to consider.

So, with the pile. Do you just inevitably get some soil mixed in when scooping in or do you leave a layer on the ground? Is there spoilage on the uphill side from rainfall runoff? I love the way you guys farm, seems like a great life.

I made a mistake of putting up a pile where my (late) mother could see it, standing at the kitchen window. She really put up a fuss, and my Dad finally told her to go sit down and let me pack the pile. Kept the wheels down and trays in the upright position. 😅

In the old days, when I was but a pup, a person would stand there and toss a handful of salt on the silage as it was being blown into the silo. The Amish still do it that way for their hay etc.
@big.g.fromohio3546 Жыл бұрын
These guys salt their hay
@VanSmith07 Жыл бұрын
Around here the Amish buy most of their hay. They also take advantage of the elderly and use them as a taxi service. They use power tools, generators hydraulic sawmills and pay people with heavy equipment to clear, plow and plant their land. All to keep up the fake image people have of them.
