When I wrote this song”world around me” I was inspired by Loony Times music by Carl Stalin. Imagine a Bugs Bunny and Porky the Pig dancing routine. It’s still hard to play cause the riff is so unnatural. Lol!!! I wrote over half the songs from our first 6 albums, Tape Head, bulbous and manic moonlight we wrote all songs together. And on Ear candy and XV I wrote 90% of the tunes on those albums. I love working with Ty and he is an amazing player and song writer. ❤️😊Thanks for what you do!!

Hi Dug. In 1988 I rode my bike to the record shop with the money I saved from mowing lawns. I bought Out of the Silent Planet because the cover looked cool. When I got home I put it on the turntable and cranked it up. OMG. It sounded like nothing I’d ever heard before. Heavy and delicate at the same time. I was hooked. I became a student of your music. Of course back then with no internet, I just had to check for new releases at the record shop as often as I could get there. I’ve seen you guys three times over the years. I met you at a show in Las Vegas. I was very awkward because I was star struck. There I was standing there with a musical titan. You were very receptive even though I was stammering and nervous. King’s X has been a deep, deep well of music and lyrics for me. You guys made my musical history much more interesting and magical. I just listened to Pleiades three time in a row yesterday. Thank you for your work and artistry. I am still astounded by it all. Peace, Kevin

"Criminally Underrated" is exactly right. I feel the modern virtuoso players are just now hitting what KX has been doing for decades. Prisoner is a perfect example. That riff is about to turn 30 and it sounds as fresh as ever... best drum fill of all time in Over My Head before lead... I put it up against In the Air Tonight all day! Thanks Dave... great work and great tribute.

My favorite bands are Rush and King's X. And in situations where it's "pick one", I always give the nod to King's X because they need the shout the most. I've seen them more than any other artist a few fold. When I was about 16, a friend of mine brought Extreme Pornograffitti and King's X Faith, Hope, Love to the music store where I worked and said, "you have to hear these!" Now, Extreme I was familiar with, and yes, I was blown away. But when he put on FHL...🤯 We Are Finding Who We Are came on. When the vocals kicked in with 3 part harmony..."Forever is a mountain...we've yet to climb..." I was hooked! Ever since then, I was all in on these guys. I catch every show I can and the guys are so down to earth and approachable. I'm always happy when someone gives them a well deserved shout.

Kings-X was a major partner and influence for early pantera. The tone of Ty and their hugeeeee sound live gave them a strong reputation in Texas. They are criminally under rated and way ahead of their time....truly unique. If you have to pair this guys with some one else....maybe Savatage...maybe Primus...maybe voivoid.....but also they are in a different section of prog. Great episode!!!!!

Great video man. One thing I don't think you mentioned, but you sure demonstrated, is Ty's touch. His selective use of palm mutes to achieve groove, and the vibrato he puts on chords as well as single notes. Those are the things I love most about his playing. You've definitely mastered those elements too.

Thanks for this, best gift for Xmas I coulda asked for! I heard a story on Eddie Trunk (who used to work for KX label at the time ) about how King's X s label would get angry due to all of the bands and music industry types who would ask them for free CDs or tapes every time they released a new album. They said if they sold all the records they gave away to other band members they'd be Top 10 billboard!

I grew up in the early to mid 80's and frankly hated most of the music of the time and mostly listened to classic rock bands like Led Zeppelin, Rush and Hendrix until I discovered King's X when I heard "Over My Head" in 1989 on MTV, then started to listen to Grunge when it broke a few years later in college in the early to mid-90's. It's ironic that no one put those bands together at all until more recently.

Thank you Dave for another episode on the mighty Kings! *update* I've always played "far fay awary" in G/half setp down. That seems to me to be simplest way to play it (as far as simplicity). The way you play it (works) appears to be a bit more difficult, however, I may be wrong. I'd love to hear your take.

You bring up a great point about the mi7 and not the C7#9 (as is apparent in Hendrix, sometimes). I think people hear the #9 chord there is because the memory of the E note is so strong. Like a comet trail. The memory of pitches stick, if possible. Great content, as always!

My favorite band of all time. They're by far the best live band I've ever seen. This is just my opinion, but I think one of the main reasons they've never been more popular, is because when they came out, they got labeled as a Christian band - due to the lyric content of a lot of their songs. So because of that, most secular stations wouldn't play them. They denied ever being a Christian band, so Christian stations wouldn't touch them either. Sad that a band as great as they are, gets shunned because they may, or may not have beliefs that are different from popular culture.
