I've gotten so many questions about using a tuning standard of 432Hz that I decided to do an "Ambient Guitar Shootout" to compare it with 440Hz. Listen and decide which you prefer!

@petesorensenguitar
@petesorensenguitar 5 жыл бұрын
Probably confirmation bias. You've probably already bought into the idea of 432hz tuning being "warmer, like a hug", subsequently you've decided that's how it sounds when really they sound more or less the same. Yes the human ear does apparently receive it slightly better, but the difference you're describing is irrational. It's the same piece of music, so they couldn't possibly evoke such drastically different impressions. Did you arrive at that conclusion before or after he told you which version was which? To be fair, it's easy to tell given that you most likely noticed the change in pitch (some people can't). Just my 8 cents, fam.

Be careful what you believe. I think you WILL be surprised when you test the hertz of this. .... which surely he has done .... and so listen closely when he reveals the truth of what lies within. 5:10 Suppressing 432 is far more important than most realize. Sound. resonance. Vibration. Cymatics. Ignoring the so called cosmic he says? Yes let’s not mention that which uplifts and overwhelming proves the importance and incredible symmetry. Beauty. And synchronicity that awaits when in tune.

People prefer 432 Hz only because it is lower. Results would be the same if you would compare 432 Hz with, for example 420 Hz. Then 420 Hz would sound deeper, warmer, etc. No magic here :)
@set3777
@set3777 2 жыл бұрын
@@Lascarnn Not correct! You need to use a fretless acoustic instrument like a harp or a violin to really enjoy 432Hz. Or at least an accoustic guitar with Just Intonated frets - NOT a guitar or a piano etc built for equal temperament. The natural wood will resonate better at 432Hz because it is divisible by 2, 3, 4 and 6 (NOT 5) at A4=432Hz C2 will be 128Hz D2 will be 144Hz Sounds will be more pleasant.

During version 1 it behaved casually, but when version 2 started playing the cat raised it's ears and I noticed it's strange look towards the speakers. Before I knew anything about this subject, I've always intuitively gravitated towards '432Hz soundings'. This frequency seems to have more depth. It's pretty clear that the second one is higher, brighter. It sounds more in tune since I'm used to music in this tuning. Higher tuning normally requires higher tension in the strings, I don't know whether that has any ramification with our perception. Version one is lower, bit more sombre and melancholic. I really think it depends on what mood you are looking for in the music.

What I'd really like to hear are some well known songs compared rather than ambient drones. I do enjoy this type of music, but I think it would be a more fair comparison to hear something people know how the original sounds already. There was a dissonance because you were adjusted to another tuning with the first piece. If you want an honest comparison you should play both versions on different times of the day. @@JewTubeSux OK fair enough. I forgot that I even wrote that and I think I had a bit of red wine (or a lot). Just saying 'stupid' to the OP is not a very good response, it's not cerebral nor intelligent but (no offense) neither is your retort. But allow me to re-retort your retort with a more cerebral retortation. Here is just a few of the issues that I have with A 432 as some sort of ultimate tuning reference pitch. Now the response of OP valid. In fact it is likely to be the response of pretty much anyone listening to the above video because they are subjected to such a bizarre, arbitrary, and foreign pitch shift. In this video, the second version is played immediately after the first one. This is a problem because the ear has fully established the tonality of the first version (of gentile tonal ambient chords no less) than he/she is subjected to an approximate 3/16th tone modulation???? (just shy of a 1/4tone) Of course, the second one is going to sound bizarre! If you played the second version first and then immediately played the first version 2nd the fist version would sound sour and slightly muddy until the ear acclimatizes to it. Also, these A/B tests never compare sophisticated harmonies that are the norm in genres like jazz, progressive rock, various classical genres or 12 tone/atonal music. No, It's always some simple guitar strumming some verygood easy on the ear chord progressions...etc. Since the 432 folks only see these videos through the lens of our 12 tone equal-tempered system than these types of musics should be required in these comparisons.... nor does it ever use world folk music. Now, if you played A=425 and then immediately played the same music at 432 people's reactions would be the same. (Also because a slight detuning in pitch is generally with be associated with a 'warmer' sound). You'd also get the same reactions if you played the same music in a key a 1/4 tone flat and then it in the original key but tuned to A=432. People would prefer the 1/4tone version because it's about 6 Hz lower than the A= 432 version. The funny thing about that is that 1/4tones version can still reference A 440 as it's reference pitch. Also weather you tune A to 440 or 432 or anything else it won't matter if you play in a Key like F# because theoretically, A does not appear in that key. Also all the videos claiming A=432 as some sort of divine tuning reference pitch make no inference to historical western tuning systems like the various mean-tone temperaments, well temperament, or enharmonic tunings of the renaissance or the countless variations of tunings in non-western music traditions like Indonesian Gamelan, Indian Carnatic music, African koras and marimbas, or Japanese Gagaku, Turkish Makam music ...etc. Or the infinite tuning possibilities with Just intonation. Nor does it hold water with the pitch drift that occurs in a cappella vocal music or non-fixed pitched instruments like string quartets or an Indian Sarod...etc. Nor does it have any relation to alternate historical equal temperaments like 22, 31,41, 72...etc. All these systems' notes are different to that of our normal tuning system It also fails when it comes to the stretch tuning employed in our pianos and the inharmonicity that occurs in a piano because of the high tension of the stings. Even more so with metallophones like vibraphones and xylophones that have even more inharmonic properties that make up their timbral structures. You can prefer to tune your guitar or instruments to whatever you like. But the claims of 432 enthusiasts as it being some sort of super frequency utterly falls to pieces when measured against any musical system and it's historical development. it fails because it's impossible. ..what actually matters in harmonic and melodic music is the relationships between frequencies not their absolute frequencies. Yes our body is mostly water but tuning your music 432hz has nothing to do with whether or not water has memory nor does it have anything to do with sonic levitation. Countless objects have resonant frequencies A=432 is no better or worse than A=440 it's just another number that sits comfortably within our hearing range. There's no Advantage to tuning to 432. It's a hoax.

My thoughts and feelings: 1st version: It's soft and calming. It made me want to fall asleep and just imagine I'm floating on water. I feel like I'm in a trance in a way. It's just so peaceful. 2nd version: I immediately thought it sunded horrible and out of tune when it started. It has a annoying sound to it that i can't explain but it's not bad overall. It does sound pretty and nice but it woke me up and alerted me. My heart beat when up in this version.

Funny you should say that Albert. Those particular bowls were hand made and I can't imagine that they know about the 432 thing.

@@kfox153 What exactly do you mean by ''music is dynamic, and always moving and changing''? Do you mean in different songs and genres, or do you mean that frequency changes in one song? Because the 2nd one is incorrect. Each song has a specific frequency that is fixed. If a frequency changed during one song, you would immediately notice a different pitch, the song would sound broken, like an old record or missing a note. Maybe in live music it's more possible for the frequency to change, but in commercial music that are recorded in a studio, the frequency stays the same for the whole song.

I suspect the multitude of commentors saying that they "feel anxious" hearing the version in A440 are feeling like something's "off" about the A440 tuning version directly after listening to the A432 version, because the notes are close enough where hearing the change in tunings makes you think something's "wrong" with it since all the notes sound a little "sharp". There is a reason that all channels doing these sorts of comparisons will always play A432 first, if they are wanting to elicit favour for A432. (Likewise the other way around).

it has to do with the number nine. 4+3+2=9, a number that is Existent and nonexistent; has to do with numerology and math. 440 is the number 8. Churches back in the 1500s tuned their pipe organs to 432Hz which and the organ was the first Polyphonic instrument. Antonio Vivaldi, a priest and yes, THE Vivaldi used it. As did Fresco Baldi, Gabrielli and Bach ,followed by Handl. The church was set up inside in such a way that the resonance of this 15,000 pipe organ would ring out and feel other worldly to the point where if the planets were aligned on that specific day, such as they were on October 19th,1980 in the San Francisco church that Eric P Dollard (scientist) talks about, it created a field of sound energy. It comes from the Pathagorian era.

432 is "darker", more "calm" when compared side by side with 440, but when played apart by, say, an hour you really can not tell anything different with your ear....but with your feelings the 432 WILL have a more relaxing effect. I done experiments a few years back on this "bull" (as I called it then) and the results was affirmative that 432 made my friends, and myself, feel more "relaxed", "non-edgy".....a LOT of "feeling terms" where tossed out. As for the "cosmic" claims, I don't know. But FOR MYSELF, the evidence says that there is some physical reaction to the two turnings, not for Rock or music with a driving beat, but for music that is calmer in the first place.....

I prefer A-432, because my human nature leads me to take a greater interest in things which are new and different from the norm. I therefore prefer to frame my experience of A-432 in a more positive light, as the contrast to the more conventional A-440 satisfies this need . All of my perceptions will also be tilted towards this opinion, consciously or not.

I liked them both...Thank you for posting this. I did feel a little more centered/grounded/soothing during version one and a bit more agitated/in my head for the second version, though it is hard to know how much of that was due to my shift in focus...the second one has the first one to compare it to, so it makes sense my brain would engage in a different way to it. My tuning tends to get off regularly enough that I don't sweat it too much for actual play time, though I think the big picture implications are fascinating to contemplate... Maybe that's just because my brain has been steeping in 440Hz tuned music most of my life? lol Thanks again!

Thanks for the demo and thank you for leaving out the cosmos jive. Definitely liked the 2nd one more. It seemed less discordant and I could definitely hear a beat of about 2 Hz. I have played instruments all my life with the piano my goto for working out songs. So maybe the piano with its fixed pitches is the source of my 440 Hz preference. Maybe it is related to personality or thought processes. Some say 432 is of the heart and 440 of the mind. How many other engineers prefer A440? I have played both for several people with a few notes in between to clear the ear in between and there was no marked preference. When I told them that the tone was 432 when actually playing 440 they liked the one I said was 432. Some folks want to be in tune with the pack.

Wow! This was the best way to compare the two. I listened to the first version, then when you started version two, I immediately knew version one was my favorite. Version two irritated my ear to the point that I turned it off halfway through and skipped to the end to see results. My friends think it’s strange that I am a musician who hates to attend concerts. It’s just not pleasing to my ear. I now definitely think it has to do with the 440 resonance that’s bothering me. Gonna stick with 432 as much as possible from now on.

It's weird, I loved the first play through. The second one was pretty, but I didn't like it as much. I play in both as well, but I have noticed that 432 seems to be more calming.

Bill.....I prefer 432. The 8 cent drop in tone makes the music sound more ethereal.
@LexanderMiller
@LexanderMiller 6 жыл бұрын
it's not 8 cents though, going from A to G# is 24.7 hz difference. in that case, 8hz is actually closer to 30 cents and not a small 8. 30 cents is a lot imo. Whether it's worth it is up to you.

A.X.'s math is correct. I'll add that measuring absolute frequencies in Hz is not compatible with cents which are relative intervals as they are simply a further refinement of a semitone. I00 cents per semitone. And just as successive semitones as well as octaves and all other musical intervals will contain increasing more (whole number) frequencies as you go up the scale, so do cents. At A440, an increase to A441, a 1Hz difference, you go up 3.93 cents. If at A220, an increase to A221, still a 1Hz difference, you go up 7.85 cents. So you can see simply adding or subtracting frequencies will not yield correct results for calculating musical intervals whereas cents will. In general, using cents to describe a frequency or pitch offset from a given point just makes more sense and that's why electronic tuning involves the measuring of cents and not absolute frequencies...except to set the pitch standard.

Same here, I felt it in my chest. The longer I listened to B though the less I felt it. I think it was the contrast, since most music is 440 and I don't feel that way with everything. Palpable emotional reaction to a blind test has my attention.

B had a higher pitch.. Of course it sounds a bit more strained.. doesn't prove anything tho.. Let's say you play a tune in 422 and then play the same at 432. You'll get the same effect..

432 is warm and inviting, 440 is immediately agitating. Already working on getting my bands to make the tuning transition :-)

The strings performed differently in each frequency. The 432 string nuance made themselves known and spoke to me. Thanks for sharing.

Well then, if normal means most common, then most of the comments you see are the normal ones 😅. Also why do you need to read the comments to find your answer?

Pitch is relative. Imagine that you played an E chord in 440, then an F chord in 432. Now don't tell anyone which is which, and don't tell anyone that you were playing an F chord in 432. Just have them compare the chords without any bias. People will hear the E in 440 as "calmer and warmer" because it's lower than the F in 432. It would be interesting to see if people could tell the difference between a chord tuned to 440, and the same chord in 432 if the chords were separated by a few minutes of silence or white noise. If the second chord is played immediately after the first, it will always sound wrong because our brains have deemed the first chord correct.

Very interesting... listening to both, without knowing - after listening to version 1, version 2 just sounded really out of tune and just didn't sit right. So, since I work with 440 all day long, I figured 432 was version 2. You got me! So freaking interesting. thx for the vid :)

I couldn't hear the difference. But i felt it. Immediately liked Version 1 and nearly "hated" Version 2. And i think that is very interesting, because the discussion about 432 hz says that 432 hz is touching our souls. From now on i will tune my guitars in 432 hz. 😃
